You set a good example for shop safety, Do not think I have ever seem a youtube video that uses PPE to the extent you do. I also saw your shop tour video where you give the standard for air exchange and how you keep your space safe to work in. Thanks for sharing.

Glad that you liked it Brian. PPE wasn't always a concern for me. Many years ago, it was a different story but then again, the standards were very different for woodworking and worker safety. Staying safe in the shop ensures that you will be able to be in the shop another day. Stay safe and thanks for tuning in.

Just found your channel and subbed. We'll have to go back and look at your previous bench videos. We're slowly getting setup for traditional woodworking.. it's something we really want to learn. Thanks for the video.

Good video as always. I'm glad you don't sanitize your work and results. You present honesty and it is much appreciated. I sensed your frustration since you weren't your usual funny self in this video. I spent countless hours building my bench. It's a full 4 x 8 and I thought I'd never get done. I used a plunge router with a 3/4" bit to drill my dog holes after the top was complete then finished through drilling them up with a ship auger bit (backer board underneath to prevent tearout) then put an 1/8" chamfer on the top (which I recommend). That exact vise gave me the same headache. I mounted 3 of them on the bench. The template was crap. I quickly learned that one must drill extra large holes to account for the not-so-accurate Chinese castings. Otherwise its a great vise. Looking forward to next week's show. Keep up the good work.

Hardnox Definitely frustrating when a product doesn't function as expected or a provided layout is incorrect. I'm no stranger to inconsistency in blueprints or plans, but a template, in my opinion, should be right on the money.

Great video as usual Kenny, WOW a lot of hard work went into that worktop. I thought at one moment when the you had the trouble with the clamp, that a bit of swearing was on its way out, and I wouldn't blame you one bit, (I bet you did off camera though) ha ha. Looking forward to the next instalment, I have really enjoyed these parts, I bet you'll be happy when it's completed. Take Care, Barry from England.

Barry Roberts The frustration of some of the build does get to you eventually, but I'm sure that the bench will be well appreciated once it is complete. Those frustrations won't seem so bad then. Thanks again for tuning in Barry.

I hate when stuff like that happens. I'm glad you chose to show it because stuff like that happens to me all the time. I was beginning to think it was just me. :) I like the progress and have no problem watching a 28 minute video. Looking forward to next weeks video. Thanks Kenny! BTW How about a shop tour?

Chem Cody Funny you should say that Chem. A shop tour video is in the works. Should be airing shortly after the bench build. Thanks for the kind words and thanks a lot for tuning in and taking the time to comment. It's truly appreciated.

+Chem Cody HECK YEA Chem Cody!! I know way too many folks that'll sit glued (no pun intended) to a glowing idiot box tv for twice that long to watch some mindless nonsense.....I'm just gettin into to these videos at 28 minutes and thinkin I should'a made some popcorn before hand!

I know what you mean about the "idiot box". I don't watch television. Heck, I don't even have cable. I just have no desire to watch it.

Hi Kenny, I'm about to start on this project and plan to order the vises this week. I'll be shopping at the same store as you did. ;-). It looks like you bought the standard vises instead of quick release. Would you stick with that decision if you were to build again? Besides the extra cost of quick release, currently LV does not expect to have the quick release version in stock, online or in my store until late summer. I continue to enjoy all your videos but have watched this series about half a dozen times in hopes of learning tricks and ensuring I have different learning opportunities. than you. Cheers!

I can honestly say that I wouldn't change a thing about this bench. I've never once thought that I needed, or wish I had the quick release vise. The vise that was installed from lee valley is smooth operating and it really doesn't take much to get it to open and close. I would suggest, that if you want a quick release vise, then wait for it. Just because I am happy with mine does not mean that you would not wish that you had the quick release. If there is the smallest inclination that you want the upgraded vise, then chances are, you will always have that inclination. Build it once and build it the way you WANT it. I never had the desire for a quick release so I was never an issue. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for tuning in to the show. I truly appreciate it. If you have any questions along the way, that the video series doesn't answer, please don't hesitate to ask. I'd be more than happy to help if I can.

I am interested in the layout tool you used for the mortise and tenons. I haven't seen those two flat. one shorter and one longer, layout rulers where you can put the pencil thru holes. What are those called and where do you get them from??

+Darryl One The layout tools that you are talking about are called INCRA Rules. They are available at most woodworking stores and online. I purchased mine at Lee Valley tools. Here's a link. www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=58877&cat=1,43513,58883,58877

+Doug Keen I won't be in the shop until tomorrow and I will check the measurement for you then. I seem to recall that it was around 5" but I'm not positive. I will let you know what the measurement is tomorrow.

+Doug Keen Okay, I didn't want to leave you hanging for another day so I went and checked the plans of the bench. My memory didn't fail me. They are spaced at 5" on centres apart. Glad to know that the old noodle is still working.

Oh, one more thing regarding clamps.... ask the wife how many pairs of shoes she needs, or jewelry, female accessories in the bathroom, or how many kitchen appliances. The answer is obvious... can't have too many. :) In the end, us guys are so much cheaper. We're happy with tools, a single pair of comfortable shoes/boots, old comfortable clothes, and cold beer (strictly for inspirational purposes & admiring our work).
