Building a V6 Miata/MX5 in 45 Mins

The FULL Rocketeer build video. Replacing the stock 1.6 engine with one with over double the power - a Jaguar 3.0 V6. You have incredible skills and dedication, I have a MX5 MK1 turbo that I am currently having tuned at Bailey Performance to bring out the best in the car. You might be right, but that would require building my own subframe, wiring loom, manifolds, exhausts, gearbox adaptor... You get the idea. I don't have the skills or equipment to do any of those skills, but was able to buy a whole kit from Rocketeer so I didn't have to 😉

Really good quality video though. That’s a ton of work to fit into 45 minutes. I know the struggle of the editing that required 😂 Maybe you could let me know what you think of how I edited mine!?

Jazda I believe the kits so retain the same gear box! I am not 100% sure though as I haven’t done a ton of research into it myself!

Wow awesome! But do you have any information on al the extra bits you’ve used? Like the fresh rear subframe, al the new bolts etc. etc. I’m currently trying to get as much information as possible before I start my own conversion

Reconditioning the rear subframe, wishbones and anti-roll bars isn't a requirement, but it's likely they will be fairly rusty by the time the car is 30 years old. Not sure where you're based, but you'll need to find somewhere local that can strip them and powdercoat as shipping from abroad would be expensive. If you're based in Ireland, let me know and I can recommend someone.

Hi Jazda, great job on the car. A couple questions....how easy/hard was it to register it and associated paperwork, and did you tax it and insure it on classic tax and insurance? Cheers from Cork

You need to declare the engine change to the tax office to get the log book updated - this requires getting a main dealer to examine the car and verify the engine number stamped into the block, and them typing up a letter to confirm. You can then tax it based on the new engine. I got my classic insurance through Autoline - the insurer is Alliance.

The full price was around £7000 in the UK, but they no longer sell it as a kit, only as a turnkey service. ie. You bring them an MX5 and they give it back to you with the V6 installed.

Didn't dyno the second engine. Engine weights the same as the iron 1.6 as it's an aluminium block.

No idea. I did it over about a year ok the odd weekend here and there. I wanted to take my time and enjoy the process, not rush through it. Contact Rocketeer and they will probably have an answer for you.

Not too bad. Just need an engineers report from a main dealer (any brand).

Hi I hope you are well. I paid a guy to put one of these in my Sierra. He did a great job but the engine I supplied him smokes and has low compression on two cylinders. It came with a manual box. Do you know what is involved if I buy an engine from an automatic car?

Auto engines are the same, just the flywheel is different.

It just supports the bumper and stops it from sagging over time.

There's a guy in Dublin that breaks MX5's (Robert Maguire) and he gets subframes and wishbones dipped, then powdercoated. He can also get bolts and brackets cleaned and zinc plated.

It's sold since the start of the year, but if you watch my other videos you'll see I had to change the engine as the first one had bearing wear. After the second engine went in, I had no issues. Took me about a year I guess, but I would not work on it every weekend and really took my time so I could enjoy the process. Not skilled at all, the hardest job I had done before then was changing brakes or suspension. Learned a lot while doing it, but it's not rocket science 🚀

It makes it very very easy compared to DIYing the whole thing. There is a lot to be said for sourcing absolutely everything from a single supplier instead of dealing with 20 different sellers.

You installed your sway bar on the inside of the right end link and the outside of the left end link.

The wheels are genuine SSR and really really light. Flow formed. The only wheels I'd change them for are Watanabes, but they are out of my budget :(

Hole in transmission is for starter motor clearance.

It took over a year, but that's only because I took my time and enjoyed the process. You could probably get it down on a week if you went hard at it and knew exactly what you were doing!

Yes. Standard gearbox, prop shaft, diff, etc. That's why it's much more affordable than going for a V8 where the entire driveline needs to be upgraded.

It depends what you mean by all of the kit. The Rocketeer kit cost me £6000 sterling at the time, but I believe it costs more now. Total cost for all mods plus the car was around €20k.

...driveability, low down torque, sound, cruising rpm, personal taste to name several reasons. Possibly a lighter engine as well all told. K-blocks are heavy right? LS swap...that's a whole other stratosphere of custom this side of the pond as JAZDA says. Bit spoilt over there...not that I'm not jealous...but the size of the aftermarket in the states for tuning has massive economies of scale that just aren't in the UK and Ireland.
