Absolutely the cleanest J swap Miata! This is what the complete kit should be. WOW!

That intake manifold is fire I would like one like that. Totally matches the valve covers

I’d wager you would do well selling those manifolds and get more peeps on board with the swap. Very clean setup! I’ve always loved the idea of the J series swap, but always thought the fab work was half-assed on the examples I’ve seen. Good power, cheap but not always easy.

Patrick, awesome video, thanks for posting. I'm getting obsessed with this swap for my '95, I too don't want a race car and ultimate performance would not be the goal. Between you and Jason I think you guys have solved the major hurtles, both cars have some great solutions. Not having the machining experience or shop availability, clearing the hood is the last issue keeping me from pulling the trigger. Great car, enjoy!

I watch this video over and over and as I get closer to starting my swap, I watch this every day. Tons of detailed info and inspiration. Thanx for this vid. Any chance you'd recall what hoses you used for the coolant to the heater core?
@patrick.woolfenden2 жыл бұрын
Sorry, I don't recall exactly. I think it was a combination of the stock Miata heater core hoses as well as a hose from my local O'Rielly auto parts. I asked if they could take me to the back of the store where all their molded coolant hoses are hanging up to choose the one that looks like it would work. I think I ended up with a pretty long hose with a bunch of bends that I cut a section out of.

Patrick: super clean setup! I'd love to have a V6 swap for my 2009 NC Sport. It's a refined car and a refined engine would make it awesome. Engine is a Honda J32-2-series V6 right? 3.2 liter displacement. Over 260HP?! Beautiful engineering solution. 28:19 sure has enough torque for a light car! Excellent work! All the best, Rob

Hello Patrick! I wanna ask you about the swapping of the engine mounting kit.. what did you come up with. Let’s say I have Honda prelude I wanna do the same swap. Is there a source for that? One more thing, what transmission do you run? Thank you that’s a very clean swap... Sweet! I love it!!
@patrick.woolfenden2 жыл бұрын
I am running the stock Miata 5-speed transmission. For the engine swap I used the MiniTec JV6 Miata package. This came with a new front subframe, engine mounts, and adaptor plate to attach the Honda V6 to the Miata transmission as well as other parts. www.superfastminis.com/store/p_982283/jv6-miata-package J-swapping a prelude is not something I know about. There could very well be kits to do it. It's just something I have never researched.
@DidierBan2 жыл бұрын
Hey , awesome job done Patrick , does this swap uses a adapter plate for the transmission?
@patrick.woolfenden Жыл бұрын
Yes, it uses the adaptor plate for the Miata transmission that is included with the Minitec kit.
@abc_builds3 жыл бұрын
What kid did you use?? Does it clear the hood and also do you get to retain the AC?
@patrick.woolfenden3 жыл бұрын
It's the Minitec kit. I think they make an AC compressor mounting bracket if you want to keep AC. I made my own intake manifold, but they also sell one. With the Minitec manifold I think a bit of the rib structure inside of the hood needs to be cut out to clear.
@cookie3273 жыл бұрын
Amazing build man. J32a2 or a3?
@patrick.woolfenden3 жыл бұрын
It's a JDM J32a equivalent to a USDM J32a2
@cookie3273 жыл бұрын
@@patrick.woolfenden Overall, would you say this swap is worth it? Level of complexity? I know you did a custom build with many custom parts, but what would you say your overall spend was? My plan was to go with a megasquirt PNP3, so similar custom ECU workload and cost.
@patrick.woolfenden3 жыл бұрын
@@cookie327 My total spend (not including purchase price of the car) was probably somewhere between 6-8K. It was worth it for me. I like how the car turned out and it was a fun project. You will get more power for the money by tubroing the stock engine. It would also be less work. But the J-Series Miata is a pretty cool thing and is a totally different feel. Lots of instant low end torque. The most complex part was the wiring. I referenced wiring diagrams and combined a J32 wiring harness with the NA Miata's harness. The AEM Series II AEM30-6051 is kind of old at this point, but it is plug and play for the older J-series engines. With the Megasquirt you will need to configure everything for the engine and setup an additional relay or something to actuate the V-Tec solenoid. V-Tec requires switched 12V. Typically ECUs switch outputs to ground not 12V.
@Oldieeeee3 жыл бұрын
Okay cool build and all... But seriously how hard is it to change the timing belt? It looks like a tight area lol
@patrick.woolfenden3 жыл бұрын
I honestly think it would be a lot easier than a car with a transversely mounted J-Series. The radiator can be removed with just a couple bolts, an electrical plug, and a couple hose clamps. Then you have tons of room and easy access to the crank pulley bolt.
@Oldieeeee2 жыл бұрын

@pixeldennis28623 жыл бұрын
that coolant hose?!?!? where what is it? custom or you find something that fit just right? couldnt agree more about the ugly intake setup .... can you do this and keep ac too? we really need to come together and get that LS intake with block off cheaper.... or convince minitec to design a better intakemanifold. ive talked to him directly he said they have tried a lot of things.. they just cant seem to get the right combo. you can see one of their intake designs on their site with photos...

The upper radiator hose is from a I.L. Motorsports Miata coolant reroute. Its available separately.

@loganhunt25283 жыл бұрын

@icebergtactical10963 жыл бұрын
Depends on how much you can do yourself vs a shop doing everything. As well as things such as higher or lower end parts, if you have a j series on hand or need to buy one, etc. But I've done the math for myself and I'll post my own research below. If you want the TLDR, 9k N/A and 15k supercharged. Both figures are parts and associated shipping only. Engine: 1k average ebay motors Subframe to mount engine: 3500 Tranny rebuild (required for horsepower gains): 1300 Coilovers : 1k Bigger tires and wheels : 1k Big brakes: 900 Here is where mine varies, I want to supercharge it eventually. You still need a better radiator but could go much cheaper here. Custom intercooler (to handle much much more heat, and cool oils) 800 Supercharger: 400 Supercharger adapter: 600 Aftermarket cf hood to fit package and handle heat: 800 Heat shielding: 200 Aftermarket ECU: 750 Upgraded fuel system: 1700 Additional parts not listed: sensor upgrades, brackets, relocating accessories, exhaust work, etc: 1k Bottom line non boosted: 9k ish parts only. Boosted 15k

I never understood the obsession with JDM engines. They are almost always abused on the oil changes and have so much carbon coke in the engines. Its always been scary looking inside when I open them up. I can understand if its something we dont have in the US but if there is a US variant, there really isnt a benefit to buying a carbon coked JDM motor just for some kinda "Clout". Regardless of me not getting the JDM thing, damn that car must be fun to drive based on my exp with other J swapped vehicles I have driven.
