Good job! My friend said it would have been easier to do it on your own if you used chicken or poultry-wired mesh. He said to roll the mesh length to your desired length on the ground and then lay a 4 to 6-inch layer of thatch on top of it. Then you can secure the thatch onto this mesh by weaving bailing twine, cordage, nylon rope, whichever you can get a continuous line of the weave. Then back weave a half a foot up from that line. This would secure it so you can lift the length of the mesh up to the rafters and secure it. Make other lengths of the thatch mesh and stagger them like shingles up to your ridge line. It may not be the traditional way, but you get even coverage, less waste and you achieve the desired look. You can go back and add more thatch over this if you bring help and apply it on top and secure it underneath like it is supposed to do, but now you have the wire mesh to secure it too. And once up, you will not see the wire mesh.

oh my God- here in the states, I would’ve put a metal roof on. I’ve done a myriad of out bldgs - never a thatch roof. I give you much respect for what you’ve done here. Thatch & hand crafted wood slats & “staples”- I’d guess you spent at least the equivalent of $750 USD on that roof bc all your materials, from my American perspective, are craft/historical specialty items & all from “hand” manual labor.

I know that water reed costs have gone way up since the war. They used to be about £4 a bundle, so I’m guessing it’s at least £10-12 per bundle. Let’s say you found a deal at £10. A bundle covers about a square foot of roof. The roof pitch on your cabin looks about 30-degrees, so I’m guessing the roof is about 22 +/- sq. meters (230 sq. ft.). Add 10% for waste and you need roughly 250 bundles. Hazel spars are about £60 per 100. Ash liggers are about £10 per 100. So, unless you’re connected with someone who gave you a deep discount, that roof cost about £2,595 in materials alone. Add £50 to keep you & your pup fed & libated.
