Building a tiny cabin in the woods, with a custom wood stove. This was the first time I've ever attempted anything like this.

My brother had a Parsons Russell, he would stick around us when we went into the woods, always believed him to be a "people dog." He didn't like the noise of power tools, but would stay around instead of going exploring on his own. Miss you pal. Like that you used a battery operated saw & drill, the lack of an internal combustion engine really made the video easier to watch. After you get the roof weatherproofed, consider putting some extensions on the bed frame for an outdoor bench or cabinet, or firewood lean to.

I have to say this is one of few Cabin builds I've enjoyed watching. When I built mine back in 1986 I put those Hinges on the Inside making it harder for someone to enter and finally used a Galvanized Lock system against thieves. I use to leave the door unlocked but I had a theft problem. The thief was eventually arrested when Deer Camera's became available in 1999. Try a Peppermint Mixture sprayed on the outside of the door and inside to keep bugs at bay. 1 quart distilled water, one cup Vodka and 30 drops of Peppermint Oil. Mix well and then use a cheap Spray bottle to spray.

I always see people make videos of them building structures like this out in the woods, and NOBODY talks about the downsides like bugs and spiders and whatnot. They all just make it look as picturesque and perfect as possible. Very refreshing to hear someone talk about their shelter honestly Keep on keeping on. And careful, don't get caught by DNR or the like.

love the idea that you left a note for however finds your shelter. Never know if it could save someone like in a jam. I make hunting stacks about the same way. I don't even lock them and leave a ledger in them. I'm always surprised when I go to one and find a new log in one for someone that took refuge in it. in this day and age they even leave a email address. it warms my heart when someone leaves a message that they stayed in one on a bad day just to make it throw the day. made many new friends this way. They've even shared their harvest with me because they hug out for a few hours in one of my natural blinds. Heck I've even recruited some of them to help make new ones

so on the roof to help waterproofing, make a mixture of the dirt (make mud) and mix in any loose gravel you can find and since you have lichens, mix those in as well. Make it about 6" thick and cover with a thin coating of the downed branches. The mud/gravel acts like a cement, the lichens grow and stabilize, the smaller branches reduce erosion. Nice job on the cabin.

Just out of interest, when I finally get a little bit of time, I’ll take your suggestion to go look that up. That's a cool cabin. Good job with a few modern tools to do some old timey work! One small suggestion if you live in a really cold area, a longer stove pipe will take advantage of heat that is otherwise lost. If you run it up to the ceiling and across to the other side it will put out much more heat!

Also, capping the end of the pipe with a "T" section, or just a curved piece of sheet metal across the opening, keeps wind from blowing back down the pipe, as it just blows out the other side of the "T".

I liked the suggestions of running the pipe across the room. But keep it low to the floor to maximize the heat exchange since heat rises, and then run the vertical pipe up and along the inner wall and have it exit prior to the ceiling/roof - on the side wall to a standard vertical pipe with a vented cover to keep the rain and snow out, plus birds and insects. My Wife had a 10' W x 12' L x 14' H Barn style shed by Tuff Shed built for me to work on my projects and "writings" and I needed to design a heating unit to keep it warm during the winter and have utilized both the propane tank in 5 and 10 gal. as well as a 30 gal "oil' drum as the burners/stoves with great success for each one since the total area is only about 1,600 cubic feet since it has a Gambrel style roof. I use 12" x 24" cast paver with aluminum foil between the floor and the walls to keep the heat transference to a minimum and also on the outside surface of the pavers to reflect the heat into 6he interior of the shop. Finally, I just found a discarded bbq/smoker and intend to tie it in to the heating system I now have since I can use it to cook with too. Hope this helps someone with a solution for a heating unit for their shop or maybe even thier home in an emergency and the videos are here on You-Tube if you need them.

I was thinking the same thing; but after laying your clay for example, take the vent off the wood stove, plug the vent, start the fire and smoke/heat up the inside really hot. Should take care of critters that live in the thatch, which is what middle ages people did periodically on their thatch roofs and set the clay hard.

that was so much fun to watch. I like how you created pegs to stabilize the logs and assemble the door. A lot of work but really effective. And your hinge system for the door was very creative. Cool little stove too and I like the stone surround as a safety measure and a massive heat sink. Best part was watching Rock claim your pillow as soon as you laid it down. She was tuckered out and ready for a nice cozy sleep curled up next to you. What a good life.

Cool project! I love this type of construction. A tip for next time, make all notches downward facing. Upward facing notches catch the rain, like pouring into a bowl, promoting rot and shortening the life of the joint. Downward facing notches are like turning the bowl upside down, allowing the rain to shed and run off the curved surface.
