To update everyone we decided to run the ARP main bolts supplied with the girdle instead of re line honing for the studs. We just used the studs for mock up to see if it would work better. So yes it is line honed for the proper hardware. You all are correct and I am aware it would need to be line honed for the studs.

Personally, I've never seen a stock block 302 revs to 8 grand that didn't puke its guts all over the track. I saw one once come really close to killing people when it blew up. It blew the intake into pieces that went flying into the stands. It was a very violent death of a stock block 302, When it blew, it went off with so much force it looked like the car's hood had been split in about 4 of 6 different places as the intake left the engine. A piece of the engine and trans blew through the firewall and barely missed the driver. If you do rev it that high, put a diaper on it so if it does go BOOM it could save your or someone else life

I really dig your approach on fine tuning the block to help with cracking, im definitely no professional I'm just passing what I learned to maybe help you as well along with what you're doing. I've seen alot of these blocks split horizontally front to back due to harmonics and the front casting of the block being very thin behind the timing cover, take a look at a aftermarket 4.125 bore block and notice how thick that area is. You're killing it man, I'm building a nice 393w currently. I love seeing the younger generation like myself doing work like this themselves, you can't be a professional if you can't do it yourself.
@fataxe12 жыл бұрын
No it is stress. It's always stress that causes parts to fail. Harmonics cause vibration, but vibrations cause stress in Materials. The real problem with harmonics is it causes a cyclic stress combined with the normal loading that can be enough to cause too much stress and then everything gives up. The reason you debur a block is because you're eliminating the stress risers. You can see the difference in strain in exaggerated models between a fillet and a sharp corner easily. The other problem with a sharp corner is not only is it a stress concentration, but they serve as excellent crack propogation points. If you really want to eliminate the chance for stress risers you would polish the entire surface or shot peen it for that good, hard, surface condition. Cast iron is actually one of the best materials for harmonics, that's why it's used in machine tools, but it's brittle and doesn't like shock loads. Engines are full of shock loads, which is why everyone goes to forged internals made from billets.

I agree to some extent , but if the majority of people say the same thing there’s probably some truth to that. 500 is a lot of ponies for a 302 based engine! Yeah your gonna get that one guy that says his 302 sees 8000 rpm all day long at the drag strip with a stock bottom end! He’s either not telling the truth or his tach is off. Harmonics to kill motors along with hp…much of the harmonics come from the valve train! Especially with a solid roller and more spring pressures….all those harmonics transfer through out the whole motor which on a small engine will in a sense vibrate itself to death….even though you can’t feel it.

When you put it back together, leave the thrust bearing cap loose. Then slide the crank from front to rear ( as if to check crank end play ) . This will seat the bearing perfectly. Then tighten the cap down to correct torque. Then check end play. This will give you the most accurate reading.

I broke 2 later model 302 blocks , stout stroker motors turning making north of 550hp. Machine work was top notch…line honed, 0 decked , bored and honed for each individual piston spec, balanced rotating assy, steel crank , eagle rods, CHP pistons , solid roller, studded , girdle ….pretty much everything I could throw at a stock block to make it live! Built for 7500 rpms After the first block broke and inspecting components I noticed a lot of main cap bounce. Looked like someone took a ball peen hammer to the machined surfaces of the main cap mating surfaces! Block cracked dead center of the front main web main cap stud into the oil galley. Oil pressure dropped noticeably a lot after a hard pull….that’s how I found the problem before it blew apart. Built the next block even better with more torque on the mains still using ARP hardware , girdle etc, 100 ft lbs and then line honed…same with the head bolts…then honed with deck plates at 100 ft lbs. Ran this motor to 7000 on a regular basis…seemed to be good for a couple years then one day I noticed the oil pressure dropped in half of what it normally was. I knew exactly what the issue was. Pulled it apart again and sure enough..cracked in the same spot, from the front main cap bolt all the way up through the oil galley. My machinist said there just isn’t enough mass in the block to support those kinds of rpm and hp. The webbing is thin and with the force of the crank pushing down and harmonics is just too much! I’d have to go to an after market block or a 351w block ( which is much beefier) I ended up getting a dart shp block….the difference over a stock block is amazing! Good luck on your stock block build …it’ll be interesting the out come!

@@Wreckitralph54 It's about spending money wisely. If someone has a big issue with doing it yourself...and wants to gamble with their money, then go right ahead. Assembling engines is a precision craft. If I'm gonna spend $10k to $15k on components, I want to know that it is done to optimum standards. Hey, there are some people who can do it well...in their own garage....but we're talking about a beginner here...with only limited tools. Ya, it might be good for KZbin views, but I wouldn't gamble my money like that, especially if I'm looking for some longevity on the engine. On a cheap stock engine, I would do it at home without a problem. On my latest build, I definitely handed it over to a shop that can be trusted to do performance builds....at least to the long block. The rest can easily be done at home.

@@truckstotractorsrepair We're talking about a beginner here.....and don't tell me that there isn't a hell of a lot to learn, especially when trying to assemble a performance engine. When I dish out that kind of money, I hand it to a trusted machine shop that does performance work... which can assemble for you for about $1000 or so (to long block)...and that is money well spent. I think learning should be done on less expensive stock engines, but hey...if someone wants to gamble so much money on a build as a beginner, I'm not stopping them...lol.

@@joeidaho5938 I never said beginners should be building performance engines, infact I said that it doesn’t matter where you bring it it matters WHO does it. If you know how to measure and know how it should go together then you shouldn’t have any issues

Drive that truck with that new engine like your 80 years old (very very slow) until it's broken in properly, then ...

You didn't clean the block, inside of the oil passages, and then wash washwash, you can't be to clean.
