Haha! Thank you Kray 😊 I was surprised how much I like the duck eggs… they’re just a little less runny than a chicken egg, but they taste the same to me. And I was surprised to see that the ducks lay better through the winter too 😊

The hardware cloth definitely works best and is easier to work with too! But it was my mission to use all the materials we already had haha and all we had was old chicken wire we had pulled out of our yard from the previous owners fence lol! 😂

I just found your channel as a suggestion by KZbin on your What makes a Mule. I'm a poultry guy but interested in most animals. Did you get Blue Swedish, Welsh Harlequins and Cayugas ? Goslings are so sweet. If you ever want a homestead duck that you can eat the extra males and get lots of eggs, I would suggest the Ancona. My absolute favorite duck breed and i've had several different breeds! The are about 2/3 white and 1/3 color. Black, blue, silver, chocolate, lilac and tri color which is a brownish/fawn color and is not recommended to breed from for show. They are cousins of Magpies though a slight different background. I like your mix of chickens from the glance i saw.
@MTN_BUILT4 ай бұрын
Thank you!! Yep, you’re spot on with the breeds☺️ they are all full grown now and I’ll need to get rid of my extra drakes soon. The goose sure is growing and I really enjoy visiting with them all haha! We have quite the mix of chickens and my new chicks are fully feathered now too!! ☺️ Thanks for the tips on duck breeds! 😃 I’m new to ducks and tried to do some research, but always love to hear from people like yourself that know the breeds well and have had experience with them ☺️

I've had chickens but not ducks, but I've eat plenty of duck eggs, they are far richer than chicken eggs and the yokes are bigger. When them ducks start laying good, you're going to be covered up in duck eggs. If you don't already know how you might want to check out how to water glass eggs. You can keep them close to a year that way. Dried meal worms are a real treat for chickens and ducks. If you don't have a rooster you got to get one or maybe two for that many chickens. Got to have a rooster to keep them girls in line;)
@MTN_BUILT6 ай бұрын
Oh nice! And yes, we’ll probably have a lot lol it seems like the ducks lay better than the chickens in the winter. Hopefully we’ll have plenty to give away to friends and family 😊 I’ll have to look up how to water glass eggs… I haven’t heard of it. Thanks for the tip! 😊

Thought I'd pass on that not all chicken/duck feed is safe in this day and age. One family y.t. site found that they were extremely high in glysophate (Roundup). They checked everything on their farm which tested clean. The serious problem of poisoning came from their home raised chickens, both eggs and meat. The feed they thought was clean was super high in glysophate. Just a heads up...make sure to use tested feed or organic. Want you folks to stay happy and healthy!
@MTN_BUILT6 ай бұрын
Thank you!! Yes that is something that is great to think about! When I raised meat birds in the past I sourced organic, non gmo and soy free feed to raise them on. But I do feed our layers the run of the mill stuff typically. We are limited to what is available around our small town. Our hens do free range a lot and get any kind of scrap (produce and such) we have. But that definitely is a great point and something to check out. I wonder how I could check on the brand of feed we buy locally…
