I did my balcony a couple years ago in 45m EPDM pond liner (30x12). I used adhesive caulking in between the through's and it helped tremendously with keeping them straight from gravity. Mine will last longer than I will.

I am going to keep my joists at 12” OC. So the space between them is 10.5 inches. Keeping to required (local township laws) of 0.25” drop per foot- the drop over 15 feet is 3.75 inches. I’ve made a mock-up of this and 3.75 inches is too shallow for my liking - so I’m making that 5 inches, giving 0.33 inches slant per foot - gravity pull on the water will make the flow easier. With this drop at 5 inches from top of the joist, this also gives me a better drop of 3 inches for the “return” bladder from the other side no - I see I can make that a drop of 3.5 inches. The longer bladder is getting a drop of 5 inches over its length - The smaller - coming from the end of the deck, is afforded a drop of 3 inches. A clear gap of two inches between ! Just in case we have a deluge, this two inch gap will be able to manage that deluge. Mathematicians amongst you will be able to work out the Bernoulli rate of flow with a drop of 0.33 inches per foot, and a a width of 10.5 inches and a height of 2 inches! Go for it !!!!

Thank you for this video . Although you could use words like, “ baffles” and “ bladders “ . . . and “return baffles” etc! As opposed to “ he’s cutting one portion of this . . . waterproofing deck,” But on the whole / thank you ! A acceptable effort.

Why the waterproofing and guttering? Are you trying to keep the below dry when its not usable space? Or you feel like dispersing the water away from under the deck? If so, i wonder, that area as been getting rain long before you added the deck, so unless it was standing water or impacting the house, i am not seeing the water proofing reason. Maybe you can add the root problem you were trying to solve?

Please Can you add some details about the BAFFLES ? Their size, how far below the top of the Deck Ledger you attach them. How much do you cover the sides ? Do they go into the gutter ?

Great work. Building a deck by myself and am doing the same waterproofing system. Did use stainless staples on the epdm? My deck frame is 42' 5.5" wide. 28 feet of that is 20 feet deep and 14 feet is 12 feet deep. Pretty proud of it. Waterproofing to use underneath as a shed for yard equipment. Thanks for the video. Very helpful.

I don't remember if we used SS or galvanized staples because we've used both.
@martinmcfly3433 Жыл бұрын
@thebedfords thanks for the reply. Built a deck before but never with the waterproofing. Dr.Decks used the same system but looked like he used caulk on top of the staples. Thought that might have been overkill if you use ss or galvanized staples with the gtape. Thanks again for the videos. I keep watching them again because my deck is taking so long to build because its just me. First summer was footings, im almost done framing. Next year will be composite decking

Please can you tell me : 1) what size are your joists !? 2x10 or 2x8 ? 2) how low do you allow your “droop” to be at the far end!? 5”, 6”, or 8” ? I’m trying to do mine own and I find that this droop determines how wide the fat end of the bladder will be, Please help - I got Dr. De is doesn’t answer - despite taking his course.

Dude. That's sick. probably way overkill, unless there's a lot of blowing rain there, or if the porch roof is just super tall, BUT awesome. This is the kind of stuff that really sets people apart. Roughly what did it cost per sqft if you can remember?
@thebedfords Жыл бұрын
You’ll see if you keep watching (and I think I actually spoke about it in a later video). Two sides of the roof are about 8’ high, but the gable end is higher because of the open truss design. A large percentage of the deck definitely gets quite wet during the rain, depending on how windy it is. But it’s also for when you want to rinse off or power wash the deck. I don’t remember how much it cost, but it wasn’t that much. Material costs, and I think it was about 1.5 days for two people. I know that’s probably not super helpful, but it’s the best I can do :)

Never heard of water proofing the deck.. learned something new! But a question, 6:16 all the posts are touching the ground, will it pass the inspection? Thank you.
@thebedfords2 жыл бұрын
So for the size of this deck, the building inspector required extra solid footings. I think I showed them being poured in the first video, but might not have shown them after that. The holes were dug 20” across both sides, and I believe 22-24 inches deep. I can’t remember exactly. Then we poured 8” deep footings in the bottom of the hole. It was a total of 15 holes, and required about 3500 pounds of concrete. The holes are then back filled, which isn’t an issue because the posts themselves are rated for ground contact, unlike most treated 2x framing material. Pretty much all posts will be treated for ground contact.

My attached deck project is basically a rectangular 32’ wide x 15’ deep/projection from the ledger. The box’ is treated 2x12’s 12” on center attached to concrete filled sonotubes by U-brackets. Would you recommend a center supporting beam/girder? The deck is open with the exception of a 10’x12’ cedar framed, metal roof canopy which will be reinforced with tailored’ blocking. Thnx for your video and thnx in advance for your take

Great video. Just found your channel. Building my deck myself with drainage like this video. Ever have trouble with the joist not touching the beam (beam nearest the house) where the joist crowns? I thought there might be 2 separate joists but looks like you ran 1 joist over 2 beams

Not very often. We grade/sort our joists by size, so that greatly reduces the chances of it happening. But if it does, I just use a composite shim to make up the difference. Thanks for watching, and I’m glad you enjoyed it!

How does the drainage work under your picture framing and middle board?
@thebedfords Жыл бұрын
It doesn’t really. But those are small areas, and once they collect enough water, it would either run off the edge of the deck or into the trough next to it. Still keeps the framing dry, along with everything under the deck.

Between material and man hours, that waterproofing system cost around $1,500 or $2,000?

I wondered is there a general formula for cutting up the bladders. One end/ side is narrower than the opposite end /side. 14” at the narrower and 24” at the fifer end ? I am going to say this is for joists that are 12” on center ! Yes !?
@thebedfords25 күн бұрын
That would be pretty close. Plumbing code for the minimum fall of a pipe is 1/4" per foot, so I think we were usually shooting for something like that for things like this.
@Indus202012 күн бұрын
Does this not depend on the width of the joists ? For 13” OC, the width on the shallower end ought to be closer to 14” and the far end, where it’s deeper / droopier, shoukd that not be 24 inches !? Please sone one reply - I’m struggling with this also.

Did I miss it in here, how do you plan your cut for the membrane to get the right sag? Start at the oc width then add 50% for the end of the trough?
@thebedfords7 ай бұрын
My recollection is that we cut the piece 18” wide at the “top” & 24” wide at the “bottom”. I think we cut a couple small scrap pieces first to make sure that change from almost no sag to significant sag would do the job.
