6:31 - I laughed a little too hard. Peter, what are the chances that you could team up with styropyro and make a CV tracking system that shoots mosquitoes with lasers? I would personally fund you a grand if I got some sort of working prototype out of it.
@AbyssPriestess
@AbyssPriestess 3 жыл бұрын
The capacitors required to provide the energy to laser mosquitoes would require a lot of power and might not be feasible to power with just solar panels. Not to mention mosquitoes are very small, fast and hard to track, they're also semi-transparent which means that a laser's energy won't be absorbed efficiently by the mosquito, meaning that the laser will have to be even MORE powerful. Having a laser strong enough to kill mosquitoes would probably be very dangerous and inefficient.

Tiny Houses like this aren't exactly a substitute for an apartment, but they're definitely a viable option for people that want a smaller, more affordable first option for a home while they save up for the dream home. I can see something like this being a good idea for someone that has saved up enough money or can get a loan (that they can pay back with enough money to spare to cover their costs and save away) for both the house and maybe some land to put it on that they use to live in while saving for whatever plans they have for their future. Another option is for the traveling project manager/superintendent.

just so you know with starlink, the reason the say its "geo locked" right now is because theres not 100% coverage. Its primarily due to bandwidth. Satellites coverage is there pretty much at this point just each sat can only service so many subscribers. So they limit how many subscribers exist in any one area. Roaming is allowed now but the assumption is that you're not a permanent subscriber in that zone, thus they can cope with the increased contention without risking a drop in performance and service for in area subscribers.
@grn1
@grn1 2 жыл бұрын
It was actually due to legal reasons but the FCC has finally given them approval for mobile operations (mobile satellite stuff has stricter rules than geo-locked satellite stuff). Apparently some people were able to use it on the road even before that but legally speaking they still had to say it was geo-locked.

To keep the fresh water tank from freezing, an electric heater is probably simplest since you have dozens of solar panels to spare. But for a more DIY approach, consider a solar thermal collector, made from a coil of PEX water pipe coiled in a shallow box about 1 sq.m / 1 sq.yd, covered with glass or acrylic. This could either circulate water directly from the fresh water tank, or maybe safer, weak antifreeze through another coil under the base of the tank. A similar panel could work as a pre-heater for the water feeding your electric hot water tank. But speaking of that electric hot water tank, you mention switching it on only when using it. I hope you’ve got a strategy that simply wasn’t mentioned in the video for keeping it disinfected. You can get some nasty diseases growing in a water tank when it cools below 120F / 50C. Is it good enough to hope that warming it back up to 140F or so once a day takes care of it? I don’t know, but I’d want a firm answer before showering in it.

12:03 Those stairs are a slipping hazard. At the very least, use some notches to prevent them from sliding when you're going upstairs in a hurry. A small notch on both sides, to lock the stairs in place, in both axis of lateral movement, while still allowing you to get them up. Though I would personally choose having them as drawers, because you might hook the top-cover while in a hurry, then step on whatever is inside that hole and break it, in your current setup. And you can even use wooden sliders, if you oil/wax them up. Also, look into small wind turbines (preferably vertical-axis wind-turbines (VAWT), which can even be home-made with plastic jugs, be them the Savonius type, or the Darrieus type, or the most likely hybrid which gets the best of both worlds), to have a backup power source, even if it's to trickle-charge the batteries just enough to run a few lights when you need them). Since you have an angled roof, you can most likely use the lower part of the roof to fit one a wind turbine or two if you add solar panels up there, or more if you don't add solar panels. You could also make a low-profile horizontal-axis wind-turbine (HAWT) for the front or back of the trailer house, as well, to use wind which hits the trailer from the front or back, when stationary or on the move, to generate power. It would also help with fuel efficiency, by pushing the air sideways, if you carry the trailer with a pickup or something equally short, as opposed to a flatbed truck. Also, consider adding a greenhouse on top of the house, for the winter, even if you keep the solar panels outside. Many people built houses inside greenhouses, because they can shade the house in the summer and they can warm the house in the winter, which when paired with the house's insulation, and a very cheap rocket-mass stove for cooking inside the greenhouse, leads to not needing much heating, if any, for the house inside the greenhouse. In particular, the part which makes it a "rocket mass" stove would be using a figure-9 (or figure-6) or flipped, as the air intake of the stove, to create a fire vortex/cyclone which to burn all the fuel leftover in the smoke, and running air pipes below the ground to avoid melting the greenhouse film or to avoid needing fireproof insulation materials for that part. And, in the summer, the sides of the greenhouse can be fully or partially opened, if needed, to get more air circulation than otherwise. You can get those angled metal pieces for the greenhouse, which are made from interlocking pieces which use screws to connect with the other parts without moving, so you can assemble and disassemble the greenhouse fairly quickly, when moving. And adding reflective panels (even made from plastic or veneer with tinfoil glued to it, or aluminium or stainless steel metal sheets) to get more winter sunlight hit the greenhouse instead of hitting the ground between the greenhouse and the sun, and adding dark-colored mats to the ground will also help heat the greenhouse, to get warmer temperatures without using fuel. Although those are semi-permanent setups, since it takes time to set them up and remove them, if you already know you will stay in a place for a few days or weeks or even months, it would be very much worth it to use. And you can even do it on the cheap, using garbage bags for the mats and using clingwrap (food foil) for the greenhosue film, because doubling the glingwrap (50% offset, like with bricks) will get you at least half the price of the greenhouse film, and you can patch holes using scotch tape (packing tape), and you can use scotch tape for the doors or door frames, too, since the non-glue part of scotch tape doesn't stick to the tape and doesn't stick with the clingwrap.

Interesting ideas! I also think securing the stairs would be a good idea, and your other points were worth considering. Idk about the greenhouse on top though. I'd be worried that would 1. Add too much weight 2. Make it too tall (this house is on a trailer and has to clear underpasses and other obstacles) 3. Make it more unstable by raising the center of mass. This is kinda in line with point 2, but yeah the higher the center of mass the more prone the house is to toppling over due to winds, uneven ground, and driving turns. That's not to say a greenhouse is a bad idea. Maybe he could incorporate one off to the side or something idk. But interesting feedback

From what I understand (from minimal research) the reason it’s geofenced is because they have to know your location to have satellites in range of your region. If you took it too far away from your geofence there may not actually be a satellite in range for the whole day. Idk if that will change when the full starlink cloud is up but that’s supposedly the reason. That’s why people who have taken their starlink mobile and have still had reception. They happened to still be in a area with coverage. I could definitely see someone going on an RV trip to like badlands or somewhere really random and there not being any reception due to the fact that there aren’t any customers there so there isn’t satellites in that inclination or orbit or whatever.

Id recommend mixing a bit of tapwater into the RO water when you get a glass. RO water is technically not that good for you. Your body has a natural osmotic pressure and RO water cam leech stuff like calcium, iron, sodium out of your system. Its not good to be drinking exclusively RO water. Maybe see if the company has nano filter instead of RO filters. Its a step down in filter size so you still have clean water but it leaves all the calcium and magnesium your body needs. Very nice build! I've thought about using metal studs given the weight and cost of wood these days. One concern. 35 years ago I lived in an old Bangor & Aroostook potato hauling RR boxcar that I had delivered to my property in No. Maine for $1200. (no wheels/trucks). Because they heated the boxcars to prevent the potatoes from freezing in the winter, it was fully insulated and lined with white cedar. The problem in the winter is that the ceiling wood had no air/moisture barrier and no ventilation between the metal roof and the insulation below it. So what happened is that the moisture from winter living would migrate into the insulation and up to the cold metal of the roof and freeze on the inside. In the spring, it would melt and run back down into the living space. I can't tell from your build what technique you are using to prevent this. You've got amazing energy! It's great to see. I used to...

Starlink CPE/dish will probably take a couple iterations to become stable. It's not bad for it's first iteration. Also on the mobility thing... It's not exactly geofenced, but rather your airtime has to be scheduled in advanced on each satellite. A given satellite is only overhead for a short period of time. If the CPE is constantly moving this is much harder to coordinate. Not to mention the dish would need to account for terrain changes, bumps, etc. Additionally, since it's a line of sight technology, using it on the road isn't going to be a great experience. You'll experience dropouts near trees, buildings, signs, tunnels, etc. Starlink does I'll let you change your location on demand. So using it on a tiny home is still possible. But will only be usable when you're parked with a decent view of the sky. You will need an alternative data connection though, if you don't know your next location in advance.

One thing that I thing I have learned is that air sealing of the outer envelope is number one when designing for living space efficiency. The tendency is to make penetration holes and to run as many things through the penetration as possible. The problem is that it is difficult to air seal multiple round wires, pipes, hoses that pass through a penetration and still make it accessible for future modification. The answer is to make a single penetration for each wire/pipe/hose. You can size a penetration for a single object very snugly and air seal with removable, flexible sealer. For such a small living space it is worth the $ to upgrade to good windows or you could double up the builder grade windows adding a solar reflective film shade externally or vented shutter to the outside could allow you to control solar heat gain for little $. Your heater looks relatively efficient but is it worth the space plus dealing with incoming combustion, air plus venting to the outside plus providing and maintaining a fuel source? You and your dog’s bodies will produce approximately 300 watts when you are in the house and that will go a long way toward heating an efficient tiny house. So it probably would need little resistance heat or even better a small heat pump mini split to deal with temperature control.

I lived in my aunt's cramped "art studio" for months, and it honestly wasn't bad. It had a microwave, toaster, mini fridge, bed, WiFi (I had to go in the corner for it to work tho), and electrical outlets. The only bad part was that when I had to use the bathroom or shower I had to travel all the way to the main house across the lawn, most of the time through the snow. I could see myself living full time in a tiny house. It's just easy. Wake up. Eat. Work at computer. Go outside, find something to do. Go home. Sleep. Repeat.

Consider making the solar panel setup similar to the "expandable fold-out accordion-style jewelry box"

@PeterSripol - I had the pleasure to help build a tiny home on wheels in East Tennessee (Incredible Tiny Homes) and you did a great job on building your own tiny house. ITH started some designs with a loft landings and it was very well received by home owners. Great job incorporating that feature into your home. I also love the little spot lights in your kitchen and the copper ceiling panels were a brilliant idea and look very cool.

Hey Peter! I've been watching you for a long time. anyway love the build, it's exactly how i would do it. On your DC breaker, I see yours is a bussman, but I see many who use the cheaper amazon ones, and they are kinda sketchy. Anyway, as someone who has a used a cheap 250a one, and then it ended up welding itself closed after i had a short with a 12s 45ah lipo battery. needless to say, it was exciting. I now have a 250a fuse instead now. I feel much better about a good old fashion solution. It may be something you want to consider since it is inside your home. a $10 fuse in front of the DC breaker can add a bit of cheap insurance just in case your breaker decides to weld itself closed. Great vid, cant wait for the next one!

We're looking at solar panels for our homes in Michigan. As a rule of thumb, they should be angled at the latitude of wherever they are set up. We live about half way between the equator and the north pole, so we should angle them at about 45 degrees. We're planning at angling them higher (30 degrees from vertical) so that they will work better in the winter at the expense of their summer efficiency. They'll probably still produce more in the summer than they do in the winter, but we're not going to get too picky about it. The real reason is that the snow will slide off better. We will be getting as many panels as we can so that we can keep our Tesla charged for free and thumb our noses at the oil industry.

The only thing I’m confused about is the faucet/hose bib that’s inline with the shower. I could understand if there wasn’t a regular sink/faucet to wash your hands but there is.. other than that this place is actually epic. You seem kind of hard on yourself. I don’t know a single person who could have built this place as well as you did as far as craftsmanship and maximizing space.

You should probably make the porch go inside the home when you're moving, like it would retract :P

Usually, the porch is permanent. People who have a porch leave their mobile home at a place for years. (Old/retired people)
