Building an Off Grid Yurt Alone in the Canadian Wilderness | Day 10
• Building an Off Grid Y... Our Spirit Bear Van Blows a Tire, we are at the mercy of the rain for completing our Yurt, and we make an amazing vegan chinese noodle dinner! We also show you what we do with our Onion scraps in our vegetable garden!
This Yurt build and Yurt life will be a journey, we hope you SUBSCRIBE and come with us! Enjoy #yurt #offgrid #tinyhouse #alone #livingoffgrid #garden #offthegrid #gardening #DIY
Nicole and I are attempting to live off the grid in British Columbia, Canada. We have 8 acres of forest property sandwiched in between the Pacific Ocean, a fresh water lake, and a stream which flows year round from the lake into the ocean. For over nearly 10 years I grew a fruit tree, permaculture, garden, and native edible plant, herb, and raised bed garden food forest. You can still watch all the garden videos of my old desert garden in Arizona. I was born in British Columbia and I have returned to the Rain Forests of British Columbia to a "Raw Land" property to grow my 1st FULL EDIBLE FOOD FOREST Off Grid on a wilderness property. This climate is temperate and coastal, rarely seeing snow in the winter and highs in the 80's (30 Celsius) in the summer. It is a rare microclimate that spans from gardening zone 7-9. The property is 8 acres and completely overgrown, mostly with conifer trees. This area is a verifiable rain forest and situated in the Southwestern-most tip of the Canadian "Great Bear Rain Forest". NicHolistic ( / holisticnicole ) and I will be learning about edible seaweeds, edible native plants, edible mushrooms, and many other edible native trees/plants as we attempt to Build a Yurt, Draw Our Energy Clean, Live Off the Grid, and Grow an Epic Superfoods Garden and Fruit Tree Orchard. We will also have a lot of changes coming so get ready. More videos and BTS Clips at my VLOG channel / adventureswjakenicole

Setting plywood is easier if you stand on it, put a 2 x 4 on the edge to be hit and use a sledge. The sledge will move it under you and your weight holds the plywood tight. Stay on the plywood while you nail it.

Bless you both, stay dry and keep extra socks around. You could rig tarps above on ropes between trees then hang another around off of shower hooks on the round metal holes above and drape it for drainage and Work when you can if there is no winds. Orherwise just best to make due and rest, exercise. Best to keep yurt components high and dry for when the weather breaks and sun is back. 😉

VeganAthlete ...Dude, I’ve been watching your videos for a few weeks now. Mostly been reading the comments. Granted, some are unfair, you guys are clearly novices doing your best, but many of the comments are made by people just trying to help. I’ve noticed probably 50 comments mentioning the cross bracing, I’ve also gone to your Pacific Yurt website where it talks about cross bracing. Don’t you think that 50-some comments referring to the some thing warrants a response? By not responding, you come across as an arrogant, knot head. Is that really what you want to portray in these videos? If you want to keep viewers coming back, and you want to be respected, respect your audience. Believe it or not, some of these people actually know what they are talking about and you could stand to profit from their advice. Please accept this as constructive. I’ve noticed you resist anything that comes across as the least bit critical. If you want to build your channel you need viewers to like you and feel connected. A little Humility goes a long way.

For everyone always set the break, always chock the wheels. Get your spare first. Break the lugs loose never completely remove them until ready to change the wheel out. When mounting the wheel squat and keep hands at 7 and 5, never place any part of your body in a pinch point. Alway have work gloves and a tarp to work on.

Yeah. I've been watching and hoping to see some diagonal bracing installed on those spindley yurt platform legs. Even some poles from the forest attached with 1/2 inch bolts would make a big difference in a wind storm or earthquake.
@fudogwhisperer3590
@fudogwhisperer3590 5 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. Joists should be 16 inches on center. Concerned about the tree's so close too. If one falls there is no protection like a normal roof would have. Also some lateral bracing..............

I couldn’t t stop laughing at the footings that he made, scrape the ground, just put a concrete block on it and then poured a thin layer of concrete around it, what’s to keep the weight pushing through the concrete, what tied the concrete footer in? all post holes in upper Michigan needed to be at least 16 inches deep to protect against permafrost and ice freezing & expansion, for someone who claims he was born in Canada he doesn’t know the effects of water and ice freezing, his foundation footings are doomed to fail

you're going to want to augment the nails you're using with flooring screws before you put your floor down and after the plywood dries out. Flooring screws are slightly different than regular construction screws in that the thread starts further from the head allowing the screw to pull the plywood tight to the substrate. Good luck

I know.. it's hard to know if they read our posts when we don't get a reply.. Must be hard to answer all the comments, that would take hours. and hours.. I write mine with ??? and all caps so it stands out when they scroll by ..sometimes it works :))

Brian Stewart I have done it here in California and use the green onion scapes (shoots) in stirfrys, salads and just snacking.

Just wondering if you guys gad checked out the 'earthship' method of buliding and if so what made you go with a static yurt home rather than the earthship especially as you are so crazy into gardening and earthship encorporates a garden right inside your house??

I believe it is a speed thing. Jake has mentioned in previous videos that he eventually wants to build a cob/earthship style home and then have the yurt for guests. But it's a lot quicker to get up than an earthship!

Okay seriously I’m 12 minutes In I see and hear jake talking . My first though was like wait why is he talking like the video is ending. I check how long I’ve been watching the video is says 12 minutes . The following was my expression 😱😱💔 it ended to soon why . Seriously if feels like I’m watching a tv series like when I was younger I would have to wait a whole week just to see the next episode . Well I’m 29 and I’m still like that apparently 🤣 no choice but to wait keeping my notifications on like always.

Another thing that works well for soil in your garden is Salmon guts or fish guts or waste. My buddy used to grow his own veges and that is what he used in his gardens. It worked awesome. Just mix it in the soil real good and turn it over a few times before planting. Another buddy of mine uses wood ashes mixed with compost.

newffee Would that bring on the Bears?
@newffee

Brigitte LM It's possible like anything else i guess. If you leave any food sources around Bears, Squirrels, Raccoons, Martins or any other creature may or may not come by. If you bury it in soil and let it compost usually it's the smaller creatures if any that might come and dig up the garden. Black bears are as afraid of you as you are of them. If you live in Grizzly country that's another story.

Brigitte LM Not if you sprinkle some lime on it. I bury mullet fish under my tomatoes and peppers every year about 12 inches deep

newffee It was shocking how large they grew the first time I did it, and I’m in the country and have various critters around that could potentially disturb the soil. I had no issues. Solanaceae plants are nitrogen hogs and rarely use phosphorus even for flowering stage, they love lots of compost and nitrogen!
