Great work and video, Q.If it's going to be a Motorsport shell why would you not seam weld the panels for extra torsional rigidity of the shell

At 5:56 are you spotweld only two layers together ? I mean the stiffener panel to the boot floor, but NOT the closing panel
@PWCV-YT5 ай бұрын
There are 3 thicknesses there. The bootfloor and the valance closing panel which is 2 thicknesses itself
@csakbencee5 ай бұрын
@@PWCV-YT Yes I know it, I am also restoring a Mini :) The stiffener has an area where it is not connected to the closing panel, just to the floor, right? Do you spotweld the whole closing panel to the boot floor at only this area ?
@PWCV-YT5 ай бұрын
@@csakbencee Ah, I see what you are asking now, It should be spotwelded in the 2 thickness area and in the 3 thickness area. It's important to spotweld near to where the subframe mounting bolts go through because if they are not pulled tight together they will distort as the bolts tighten which will crack the paint and lead to rusting in that structural area
@csakbencee5 ай бұрын
@@PWCV-YT Thank you ! I am not sure if my spotwelder powerful enough for 3 layer but I will make some test

I have a R. H. front nose section from a early (59 or 60) mini mk 1 assembly. It lacks The separate "A" panel and resembles the new magnum panel, I guess BMC decided to make the body more repairable after a frontal crash by adding the separate "A " panel.
@PWCV-YT5 ай бұрын
@@jimhall9624 the A panel was never separate on a saloon, it was a one piece pressing but was it separate on van and pickup models

They were both rot boxes ! I had loads of minis in the day and mk1 escorts, both over rated in my opinion but I did learn how to gas weld long before mig welders were available and made a fortune every weekend welding sills and wings etc, I would get my oxy and acetylene changed at the local scrap yard, there were regular customers for welding at mot time , people would even have their exhaust welded up !
