In this update of my On30 Model Railroad, I focus on the progress of my mountain and tunnel/rock shed. Everything about building these layouts is all about patience, sometimes it takes weeks or months just to complete a project, and in this case I got the first layer of plaster cloth down on the mountain, but next will come a second layer of plaster cloth and then a layer of plaster for sculpting the rock features. Lots of interesting work on the way!
This is my On30 scale layout called Tumblerock Canyon Railroad. It is O scale running on HO scale tracks to simulate a 30 inch gauge between the rails. As such all the buildings and scenery will be in O scale and all the trains are narrow-gauge equipment. This layout will be an ode to Oregon Country of the 1890's where logging, farming, and mining were king. The layout will be covered in forested hills and mountains, and the small town will be merely a whistle stop for the local industries as passengers and cargo are transported to Portland to go further distances.

Just found your channel. Personally, this isn't one of my hobbies but I greatly appreciate the craftsmanship and attention to detail that go into great builds. Thanks for bringing that to life. If you haven't yet, I hope you get the chance to ride along on the actual Silverton rail line sometime in the future! I did this as a kid and still remember it, such a great experience.

The dad bit I like... I'd like to do this with my son one day. He's three, so a bit young. We used to love hanging out at the train station, but this year it just hasn't been possible. Probably not next year either the way things are going... But models! That's definitely a future project

I've been lucky that my Dad and I have a lot of the same interests so we're able to do a lot of things together. Working on models is always been our interest, but oddly enough, this is the first time we've ever worked on something together!

Cool, I have two combine cars, two coaches for my passenger train and a mixed train i did receive the Climax a couple of weeks ago. I also got locomotive happy and recently purchased a Bachmann 2-6-2 Tank Trench Locomotive. My back story is that after the Great War the Kansas River and Southern Railroad purchased a Baldwin Trench Locomotive from the Army when the War Department sold locomotives and rolling stock not shipped to France before the Armistice was signed. Now in the world of the KR&S the Trench Railroads were 2.5 foot/ 30 inch gauge as opposed to the real 2 foot gauge. The time of my model is post World War 2 and the KR&S is still running that Trench Locomotive still in its Army paint scheme. I may even get some of the USA or Quarter Master Corps 18 foot Box Cars, Flat Cars and Gondolas to build up my rolling stock saying the KR&S bought them surplus as well.

Thanks Ryan! I designed this layout to be transportable. I don't believe I could have built it any bigger. But essentially I designed it so the layout is built onto a custom benchwork which is independent from the "legs". The "legs" are a system that is retractable and can fold up and be carried away separately. To get the layout through doors, you just turn it on its side and have two people carry it out. It's still pretty heavy, but not as heavy as what other layout builders might create. While I designed the layout benchwork, it was my friend Steve who fabricated and constructed it for me since I gave him my old fully-built N Scale layout.

Hi Alex, I am an On30 operator too. Scratch is always more satisfying. I call myself trainmaster bond. I just got thru shooting my first batch of scratch built tall pines. I am modeling the area around Mt. St Helens Amboy area. I do post on TikTok and Instagram, but I am getting ready to upload stuff to KZbin. I have lots of requests for that.

It's looking much more like a mountain now. Looking at it I think what happened with the first wooden tunnel was mixing up some of your interior and exterior measurements.
@AlextheHistorian
@AlextheHistorian Жыл бұрын
Well actually what happened was the assembly part. The beams didn't glue vertically, they glued at angles which decreased the width in the tightest part of the tunnel. It would have had to be rebuilt and I wasn't satisfied with the design anyway.
