Today we build a mini feature and name it after Oscar! The feature is a mountain bike drop which is small enough for Oscar to actually follow and run off of.

@@BermPeakExpress You might need to gap them more. Back of the envelope math puts a 6" wide board of black locust moving up to 3/32" over a year. (Radial coef of expansion of ~.0025 per 1% change in moisture, with outdoor east coast having up to 5% change over a year, within several standard deviations of normal expectations). Those gaps look under 1/8", I think you'd want at least 1/4" for safety and drainage. An alternative to larger gaping, which does reduce the holding power of the screws but means you can keep the gaps smaller is to make the screw holes wider in the direction of movement, so the board can move around the screw. You'd want to use washers between the screws and the boards, or even longer screws with bigger heads, though.

If the head snapps off of the screw, the forces in the cross-section were too high causing it to fail. To improve this, you either need to reduce the forces acting on them (spacing out planks, so they don't work against one another), increase the cross-section that the forces are spread over (bigger diameter screws or more screws for the same job) or switch to a better material bolt (which can handle higher stresses before failing). Making the bit of the screw that's driven into the wood longer does not help with this... in any way what so ever. Trust me, I'm an engineer ;) (Automotive engineer.. but the mechanics should be the same :D) Unless someone knows more about woodworking and can explain to me why the longer screw would help... I am more than glad to be proven wrong and learn something new.

Wouldn't nails work better with same length and diameter?
@dovidribiat4059
@dovidribiat4059 2 жыл бұрын
@daniel The longer screws are to stop them from just pulling out of the underlying wood. The breaking problem he deals with by leaving a gap between the boards so they don't get pushed by adjacent ones when they expand.
@dwiesch
@dwiesch 2 жыл бұрын
@@dovidribiat4059 Ah, ok. He showed a clip of him getting out a broked head of a screw while talking about this, so I thought he was trying to prevent that. Yeah, leaving more space will help (as I pointed out in my comment). Guess it was just a poorly picked flashback clip.
@dwiesch
@dwiesch 2 жыл бұрын
@@miniMEGA29 I'm not really an expert on wood, but nails dont have as much pre-tension as screws do. They are just kinda held in place by friction. So when the wood expands as it gets wet and then retracts as it dries off, I would imagine the nails getting loose over time. Besides, it would depend what broke of the head of the screw. If it's sheering forces, the nail would do no better than the screw. If we're talking pulling forces, the nail would be pulled out a little and get loose. Which I guess could be easier to fix cuz you'd just have to hit'm all once to get them back into place every once in a while... but again... donno that much about woodwork, especially exposed to the elements.
