In this video, we build, paint camouflage, detail, and weather the Hasegawa 1/48 scale F-2B Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) fighter jet kit# 07439. This Special Limited Edition kit is dubbed “21SQ Return to Matsushima AB”.
This will be amateur model Project #20 and the 7th overall Viewer’s Choice winning request. The Wild Card drawing for Project #21 is also presented.

This channel got me back into model kits after a 30 year hiatus. I would guess I learned 90-95% of my technique from watching these videos. The presentation max uses makes them more accessible and he gives his viewers, especially somebody just starting out, a lot of confidence to go out and try something new

Ah, your comment about no mention of the model being slightly tail-heavy is really irritating. For a manufacturer to leave out that vital info ( or the pathetic 'may require nose weight' leaving us to guess how much is enough) has always frustrated me. Does Hasegawa think it's some kind of trade secret? Your modeling skills are top-notch Tom. Thank you for calling out that gross error by this otherwise outstanding kit maker. Your builds are always inspiring.

I have the Iwata Eclipse too and can generally go a few paint sessions between full teardown cleanings. Every time I finish a color, I half fill the paint cup with alcohol, wipe the sides and bottom of the cup and the exposed part of the needle with a Q-tip, and then spray the alcohol through the brush. Then I half fill again with airbrush cleaner, let it sit for a minute, then spray it through as well. I use Tamiya acrylics too, thinned 50/50, and have found this regimen works really well for me. I do have to do a full clean more often if I use a metallic paint or something thicker than my standard 50% Tamiya mix. Mission Models Have Glass V paint, for example. That takes a full cleaning each time.
@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Josh, that's basically how I clean my airbrush between colors sans the airbrush cleaner. However, I do use a thicker ratio than you and that might be why I have problems and you're not having as much. Definitely anything "metallic" based seems to require an immediate clean up for me.

@AvengerII
@AvengerII 4 жыл бұрын
Not a direct copy. It has a Japanese-built wing and Japanese avionics. A lot of the design work was influenced by a late 1980s upgrade program called "Agile Falcon." Agile Falcon mainly featured an enlarged wing and tail surfaces that were to reduce wingloading and restore the handling the F-16 had in the original A-model. The F-16C has grown a lot in weight but has the same wing the F-16A did. While the newer engines allow higher acceleration and better climb, the F-16C isn't quite as agile as the F-16A and has a reduced 9-G envelope because of the higher wingloading. The F-2 program still got delayed by at least 5 years because of fighting between various political factions. The infighting within Japan was at least as bad as that between US and Japanese officials. The US officials believed they were handing over F-16 tech for a song that would aid Japan's aerospace industry unfairly and end up making Japan a strong competitor in the future which really hasn't happened; Japan's aerospace has strong subcontracting and actually does provide quite a bit of technical support to Boeing but the Japanese market is too small to self-start and sustain a lot of domestic programs let alone design a 777 competitor. Within Japan, you have the usual pacifists who don't want anything remotely military (but are blissfully ignorant of reality and the need to STILL have a decent defense force; can't depend on the Americans for everything!), nationalists who don't want to deal with the reality Japan can't go it alone for defense (too expensive, not enough manpower to deal with China) and that it's not the power it was pre-WWII militarily, and the industrialists who want the contract business AND to keep Japan's technical edge so that it's not completely at the mercy of the whims of US policymakers. They also want Japan to have the ability to make its own weapons if it can't license certain systems like the F-22 which was refused by the US government. As it was, the US probably ended up getting the better of the deal. Japan ended up transferring composite technology to the US in exchange for the F-16 plans. As it was, the Japanese "F-16 Zero" ended up not being much if any better than a Block 50 F-16C while at the same cost 4 times as much! $100 million for each F-2 is why the program was ended early and only about 92 are in service. The F-2 is larger and heavier than the Block 50 but has the same engine and doesn't quite overcome the weight increase despite the larger wing. The Japanese could not export the F-2 under law because of both the Japanese constitutional bans on weapons exports AND the license agreement with the US. It was never going to be a profitable or cost-effective program but it ended up going well over-budget. As a consequence, the production of the F-2 was halved and the JASDF was forced to keep its surviving F-4s in service probably 10-15 years past their intended retirement. The F-2 was supposed to replace both the F-1 and F-4s in Japanese service but ended up replacing only the F-1.

Good to see you back, after some time =) there are couple of comments I'll drop, randomly, as chat "adds-on" =) Good that you showed us an overlay of the silhouettes of these crafts, at the beginning I said "mitsuwhat? Isn't that an F16?" I bet they must have been licensed to build this "raising sun" craft... It's always amazing to see how a simple black priming adds so much to the realistic tone variations the top paint gets! Regarding primers, would you think that the real ones (or, say, those sold for this purpose) are indeed to thick to risk flattening of the surface details? Regarding weathering, one thing heard from the guys used to do it (oil paints) after a clear gloss coat is that, when done directly on flat matt paint, oil color would not come off afterwards. You actually show that is not necessarily the case, interesting... I would also be interested to know the answer to that guy asking about commission jobs... I tried to ask this questions to a few guys, but never got a reply, maybe too jealous to reveal this "secrets" I ;-) Nevertheless, considering that good 1/48 kits nowadays easily starts from 50$\€, if not more, considering all the time spent for building and painting, I guess that triple the price from a commission work would not sound as a crime. I am interested in getting opinions... I guess that's it, for now... =) Cheers!

Thanks for the great build videos! I get quite a bit of knowledge from your stuff. I'm getting ready to do a Hasegawa F-4 in this same color scheme...and i appreciate the paint mixing info! Question for you though...what adhesive did you use for your template on this build?
@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner 4 жыл бұрын
Hi svrhodes77, I was trying out some tackcy putty to hold down the camo templates rather than my tiny bits of rolled up tape this time. Each adhesive has its pro and cons and I'll probably being using them in combination next time.

Your videos are some of the best model videos on KZbin. One question though. If I were painting the underside of a plane and didn’t add a primer, would there be a way to fix the flat colour to look better/more natural without spraying it again?
@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner 4 жыл бұрын
Hi bonnie1020, thanks 😀. Since you're trying to avoid another paint coat, then the only thing I can think of would be to gently rub in some pastel powder in a color or colors towards what want to to achieve appearance-wise.

Airbrush does not jam. Use Badger Needle Juice for the needle and clean the airbrush with a regular brush. You should clean the cup and the seen needle part with the brush. Put some cheap tamiya color thinner (use cheap window cleaner- clear one with ammonia base-only for cleaning). Put your finger in front closing the nozzle cap and the backward circulation of the air will clean the internals. You have to practice your own but you will find it out. You do not need to loosen this up each time. Take care.
@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner 4 жыл бұрын
I'll try that, thanks John K 🙂
@johnk7134
@johnk7134 4 жыл бұрын
@@MaxAfterburner Yes my friend, the big deal is to use the needle juice. Do not be frighten, first you spray some thinner so the excess lubricant from the front section of the needle can go away and the airbrush will be much smoother. What is happening now, is due to the fact that the tool is new and the Teflon seal is tight. I have the same airbrush, it is a very good tool that can spray a variety of patterns, much better than your old one-since you get use to it, you will not want to change it.I like your builds for the ease of build and the relevant final outcome, it's pure fun with no much of frustration. Although i usually paint free-hand i would love to see a video of how you make your masks from the instructions step by step. Keep up the good work :)

For Japanese music, the bit from 5:29 to 5:51 sounds positively Irish. As for the rest, maybe it's just your taste in Japanese music bringing it out but I never noticed how bluesy it can sound. Also, thanks for answering my (and I'm sure others') question about scraping vs. dry brushing. I've always been a scraper too. ;>) Nice calming build video. I didn't see the implied potential difficulty you mentioned putting the fuselage halves together though.
@MaxAfterburner
@MaxAfterburner 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, I just used some "Japanese" music that was available and didn't require some sort of royalty fee. I had to get down in and fiddle with the seats and consoles while joining the fuselage halves which I wasn't able to capture on video. You would have just seen the back of my head anyway! 🤭

@@MaxAfterburner Thanks. I get the "head in the way" bit. Used to be I was very nearsighted and could do that too. Now that I've had my cataracts out I don't have to wear glasses but to do fine work I need magnifiers which I can't see around my own fingers with. So, fine work is a lot harder than in the past and if I wanted to make video of it I'd have to mount the camera on the magnifier or something.

Hi Thomas, I've never done any commissioned work. I would consider it if you're looking for a novelty item such as, "this was built by that guy on KZbin". If you're looking for a museum quality piece, I think my work wouldn't be what you require. If that doesn't deter you, this channel's home page has a "business inquiry" e-mail link you can send details and what complexity the kit might have for review, thanks

Hi swoosh13, in my more recent videos I display slides (after the intro for my model builds) of the materials and equipment I use which would be easier for you to view than for me to write that all out. I also follow those images with a specific list of the paints I used for that particular model "episode". I started this around Project #22 (A-7D Corsair II), but I suggest checking out the latest one or two of my video releases to see the most updated list of what I use. 🙂
