Zac-another very good video. I am looking at the Laguna REVO 18/36 110 loathe. I am curious if you have had the chance to do any outboard turning. I like what I see with the ability to turn a large rough blank between centers with the 20" Steel extension accessory. I do not have 220 in my shop and am curious about how you think a 110 machine would handle 36" blanks?
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Eric! I'm glad you enjoyed it =D No, I haven't done any outboard turning yet, but I do have the 20" extension on the way. It was backordered until next week. I'm not really sure how the 110 version would do with 36" blanks, just don't have any experience turning large blanks, so I'd really just be guessing on that. There are a couple of Laguna REVO facebook groups, you might run that by someone who has the 18|36 before you decide to purchase one
@joshuaknipp5230
@joshuaknipp5230 6 жыл бұрын
I have the 220v 18/36 I think I would be hesitant to turn a 36" blank on it. But I have seen crazier things if you have the guts to do it. Check out this vid by the crazy French Candian Le PicBois kzbin.info/www/bejne/amebdpqObbmFe9E I don't think he has 220v either, in fact he has manpower to move the blank at first haha. Better hope you can get that sucker really balanced because horsepower is only half your worries with a piece that big.

@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul, I still love this lathe!! It's a beast, and still running strong. The 24|36 costs more than the Galaxi, but the 18|36 version is about the same price. Both the 24 and 18 are about the same exact lathe except for some extra capacity, weight, and power on the 24.

Zac thanks for the update .I will look forward to the video. How do you find the bango and tool rest do you think it is difficult to tighten down? john
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 6 жыл бұрын
Both work great. The banjo stays put with little effort locking it down, and the tool rest isn't bad at all. It locks down easily and stays put too. I have some different size Robust rests that I bought for it and will admit they are a bit nicer overall, but the quality difference wasn't enough to make me want to spend the money to replace the 12" one that it came with. Great questions by the way, I appreciate you asking them. I'll make sure to mention the banjo and rest and show how they work in the update video in case other people have any questions about them

Now being 9 months into your shop, what are your thoughts on this lathe? I am interested in purchasing one, either 18/36 or 24/36, and I am trying to get as many opinions from people I see using it, like you, Jimmy Clewes (he was very helpful), etc. I wanted to get 1836 with extension (up to 32" swing, plus 20" length), which will eat half of the difference between the 1836 and 2436, so I am not sure if I should go with 2436 and skip the extension, since doing things bigger than 24" is probably be extremely rare type of project. Thank you.
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 5 жыл бұрын
I didn't realize Jimmy had one too, that's awesome! I absolutely love it still. I really haven't pushed the limits on it at all, but it has met or exceeded all my expectations. It's one of the best tool purchases I've made for sure. It's obviously overkill for pens, but it is definitely a lot nicer to work on small projects with. Night and day difference compared to the Comet mini I used to use. The one regret I have is not getting the mobile base package. I'm planning to change my shop around again soon, and it really would have been nice to be able to just pop it up on the wheels and move it around. The major differences that I know of between the 18 and 24 are weight, power, and capacity. The 24 is flat out a beefy lathe, super heavy duty legs, and the bigger motor/headstock adds even more weight to it. Really rock solid, super quiet, and smooth running. I could have easily gone with the 18 as well, it would have done everything I need.... However, I decided to just go all in and never reach a point where I wished I had the extra capacity or power. One other thing, I believe the 24 is taller than the 18. You might want to double check this, but I think the 18 plus the riser blocks puts it about the same height to center as the 24 out of the box. Again, not totally certain on that one, so you'll want to double check that I can't say I have experience using a lot of different lathes, but from what I have seen and tried out, the 24 will give any lathe on the market a run for it's money, and it is far cheaper than a lot of the heavy duty lathes out there. I actually think it's a pretty reasonable price for all the features you get with it, definitely worth the extra dough for me. Heath Knuckles just bought an 18|36, you might ask him his thoughts on it. I'd imagine he was trying to decide between the 18 and 24, might have some good thoughts on why he went with the 18

Hey Zac. Congrats on the new lathe. I pulled the trigger on the 1836 Laguna last November. No regrets. I was torn between the Powermatic and this. But I think Laguna seems to be better value cost wise. The only qualm I have, and I noticed it on the bigger bro 2436, as you were maxing it out at 3600 is that the speed dial seems mislabeled the plus sign = slower speed (weird). But that really is a minor thing. The other thing I wish they had was a hands free spindle lock, when you are trying to muscle on a big blank with a face plate you'll wish you had three hands.
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks brother! I am pretty stoked about it. Yeah I noticed the plus/minus thing too, it's kind of odd LOL I'm actually kind of happy that it doesn't have a hands free spindle lock. Every now and then I tend to forget to unlock it before spinning it up, and that's just not good LOL I'd be down for a hands free as long as it also had a lockout mechanism so you can't turn the lathe on when it's engaged

Great video! I have been looking at the Laguna 24/36 which is higher up than its older brother the Laguna 18/36. I'm only 5'7" tall and when I recently looked at a 24/36 it seemed a little high with the 44.5" spindle center height...the Laguna 18/36 has a 41.5" spindle height. I'm not sure how tall you are and wonder how you have found the height when actually doing some turning. My current lathe is an older Jet 1236 which has a spindle height of 40.5" which is a little low and I need to bend over a little bit. I see the new Powermatic 3520C has a 42.5" spindle height without the riser blocks and adjustable threaded feet. Your thoughts?
@ZacHiggins
@ZacHiggins 6 жыл бұрын
I'm 6'4", so I like the height of the 24|36. I was looking at the 18|36 initially, but I was going to purchase the riser kit for that one. I decided if I was going for full size, may as well pay a little more and get the extra capacity, weight, and horsepower and forego the riser kit. From what I can tell, both machines are the same overall quality, just depends on the height and if you want the extra capacity and horsepower. I think you'll love either of the Lagunas. I've had mine for about 7 months now, and I still absolutely love it!! =D

It's a fabulous machine! I love it, and I think you will really enjoy it too. Everything about it is just plain solid. I couldn't tell you if the tool rests you have will work or not. All my tool rest posts for it are 6.5" to 7.5" long, maybe you can compare yours to that number
