Looking good! Stepping down to 2x4 studs to hide the pocket doors is really clever. Hopefully you can build them thick enough to provide meaningful insulation while still fitting in the wall. One thing I would consider is skipping the drywall and using OSB or plywood on the walls so you can screw things directly to it without anchors. Half inch plywood is about 70% more insulative than half inch drywall, so you also get that. OSB is about three times better than drywall, if I'm reading my chart right. A couple coats of white paint would make it look more like drywall and help with lighting. I would also consider skipping the drop ceiling to give yourself a bit more headroom and again to make hanging things easier. Overhead storage is handy, and LED shop lights are a lot more forgiving than fluorescent tubes as far as bumping them goes, what with not being made of glass and all that. Painting it white would make the lighting better. You could also increase the insulation value of your window by adding a storm (if that's possible). A storm window more than doubles the R value of a single pane glass window, and a screen would let you have it open in the summer without letting the mosquitoes in. Window film insulation kits also add about 1 to the R value. The obvious downside is you can't open the window without destroying the film. Can't wait to see it finished, Dan

This is a great layout for the space you have and the barn door is a good idea.

looking good Justin! Love the sliding pocket door idea, that is going to be slick! I just finished running all the wiring for my shop and it's soon time to get the electrical inspector to (hopefully) tell me that it's good to turn on (first time ever doing electrical work) Later I plan on making a few of your builds to save some cash on shop tools :) PS: we got a lot of snow already up here in Alberta, Canada.

For me I lost insulation depth where the pocket doors were. And after a few years the door would hang up in pockets because who ever installed the doors did not do a very good job, the the outer wall changed shape causing the doors to slide against walls. The track started sagging too. They were just a pain. Now if you made barn doors on a rail you could retain the insulation value. And a Barn door would be easy to make and make your shop stand out. You have a nice set up. In my shop I painted my walls and ceiling bright white ( it was egg shell) I installed LED lights and it is very bright and nice to work in.

I think you are awesome. I would give an arm an a leg to able to come and help but the distance is probably to far. I live in Texas. Would not need nothing in return just having a new woodworking buddy would be payment enough for me. Anyway, waiting patiently to see the finished product

Thanks Eugene! I'm in MN...A helping hand would definitely make it go faster. I only get to work on it an hour or two in the evenings, and on some weekends so progress is low. Hoping to have it finished before Christmas so I can get a video out before then.

Very nice! but why make the 'sliding doors' operation space' face toward the shop? wouldn't it make more sens to put it toward the garage area so that you won't affect shop walls' surface to use it say for tools storage and stuff? otherwise great video as usual!

Good to see you Justin! The shop looks like it’s coming along nicely! I’ve always considered high ceilings very nice and open, do you have reason for the drop ceiling vs painting or drywalling the ceiling? Looking forward to seeing it all complete!
@JustinDepew6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The main reason for the drop ceiling is that we want to remove it from the basement anyway, so I can reuse it in the shop. I could be convinced to not use it though.

Great idea on the doors! You going to hang them on the car side so that you don't lose wall space in your shop area?
@JustinDepew6 жыл бұрын
They will be on the shop side... But since the wall is thinner by the doors they won't stick in too much

I have had pocket doors in the past from my experience I did not like them. The two x six insulated wall and doors that swing into the garage would be my choice.
