Duct tape - the handyman's secret weapon. I really like the relief hole for the hole saw dust. Seems to work very well. One long slot for the downdraft section works better than lots of small holes. As the video shows, most of the sawdust lands between the holes and is hard to sweep into the small holes. A long slot hear the back of the downdraft section makes it very easy to sweep the sawdust into the slot every few days. My dust drawer has two 2" holes in the back with an adjacent gap in the divider to the downdraft section. That draws a vacuum in the drawer which pulls more sawdust into the drawer.

Really nice build! So impressed by you guys who take the time and effort to paint and make it look so good. The cut-out for the fence is just next level. I'm looking to do something similar and have a question on the holes/long slot for the downdraft. I was thinking about just leaving it open. What's the benefit of having a smaller holes? Does it increase the airflow in some way?

It actually does work for sliding miter saws. I was wrong to say that. There are people who have bought the plans and made it for sliding saws. You just have to build a much bigger box.

What a great project. Not only the final result, but chock-a-block full of tidbits that apply to many other projects. Miter saw dust collection is a universal issue. I had noticed that your saw is not a slider but didn't think about this not being viable for a slider, until you pointed it out at the end. Then, wait - mine is articulating (Bosch) - not a slider. But I guess your design would not accommodate this either because the motor has to go back and forth? Same for the forward-facing sliders?

Yeah the sliders/articulating saws are harder to accommodate. The design of the hinged panels and inside wings would have to change which is something that is not covered in the plans.

Hey Justin! After watching your video I decided to add a down draft table to my miter station. It is very similar to yours except I have a sliding miter saw. I also bought a wall mounted DC rated at 650 CFM.. I'm not getting nearly as much suction as you! Any trouble shooting tips?

Great job. Just built my first miter saw station in the shop, on rolling table with extensions and rails, but had to come up with some type of hood dust system. We are general contractors, so our primary shop saw is a 12” sliding compound miter. Definitely complicated the process for creating a reasonably descent dust system, but I think Ive got one that is sufficient and is certainly much better than before. It also keeps also of the dust and larger pieces from getting thrown behind the work table. Sure seems that these companies could come up with a better dust management design. That tiny little opening that comes on the stock saws to connect a hose is a joke.

Great demonstration of a smart solution to the mitre saw. On another note: why do you have this smaller sled with no rear fence?

The small sled is nice because it's lightweight and quick/easy to use. 90% of the pieces that are crosscut on my sleds are less than 6 inches wide, so no need to pull out the big sled. There is no front fence needed to hold the sled together since it is small enough not to deflect under its own weight.

A re-watch brings up several questions. Does the drawer catch anything besides the sawdust being ejected through the saw throat? What do you figure the downdraft hole area needs to be relative to the area of the dust tubing? Maybe 1.5 x greater? Smaller? I'd guess the area under the saw table would benefit from vacuum. At this point, what do you think? Also, if a builder used a larger shop vac and a 2-1/4" diameter hose just 1' long and centered under the downdraft portion, would you expect that to be satisfactory? Or would an eventual upgrade to 4" tube connected to a central dust collection system still be necessary?

Hi Mark - The drawer only catches dust through the throat plate. The reason the area under the saw & throat plate was not included in the down draft was to localize the suction at the rear where most of the dust is. The down draft hole area should be equal to the dust tubing area. I think a large shop vac with a 2-1/4" hose would be satisfactory as I used that for quite a while. However that being said, it's a huge upgrade to get a 4" hose connected. The extra airflow helps keep the fine and medium dust from coming out the front of the saw since there is a strong airflow into the hood.

What is the benefit of having the dust drawer? Would it be more effective at collecting dust if the hole under the saw and the holes in the back were a part of the same plenum? I'm not sure if you tested that already or the dust drawer is there to make the shop vac work less hard but I would love to hear your answer.

The thought is to focus the vacuum on the dust hood portion. If the drawer was included the suction would be less focused especially with a big hole cut out. Almost all of the suction would go to that big hole and very little to the hood where you actually want it. The passive dust collection of the drawer seems to work pretty good.

I was thinking that you could use a smaller hole for under the saw if it had active suction there but it does seem like only a small portion of the dust ends up there anyway and the suction would be best saved for the down-draft section. This whole discussion is really making me think about how inherently dusty miter saws are lol.

A few days ago I built a dust hood for my sliding mitre saw and... man... at some point the swearing was phenomenal. Dust hoods with an efficient dust collection for sliding mitre saws are not easy to build. It improved the dust flying around in my garage but still not happy with it. I still keep looking at it trying to figure out how to improve it. Very soon I’m starting another prototype dust hood number 2 and see how it goes.

Thanks Greg. In my miter saw station I have no problem holding down long boards with the extra support of the station. For short pieces I use a hold down stick that I made (I have a video on it).

Why not just delete the drawer and continue the downdraft table out front and under the saw? I think the rest of the build is awesome and I’ll definitely incorporate these ideas into my miter saw station. Should be easy since I have the same saw.

I have the same saw, and built a similar hood (not as nice). The biggest problem is that when you first plunge the blade, sawdust spews everywhere, and it will bounce off the front of the hood. Once the blade is under the surface of the board, then it all shoots straight back.
