What I loved about this particular tutorial is how you started with the typical straight out the camera washed out lame image, and you were able to correct the glare, increased the contrast and dial in the color, all without diving into the camera menu or adjusting any software slider, you did it all by trial and error, out on the field, you did it all by adjusting only two elements, exposure and composition. Camera angle, Camera shutter speed and Flash output. That image went from being very amateur to looking like it was taken inside a studio. All very simplistic explained and to the point. Loved it ❤

I've been shooting portrait work for the past few years, but typically just camera and lens. Getting a light on the model is something I've been considering for a while, but free time is a minimal thing nowadays. Big thanks to you for the explanation and for showing the simplicity of these shots; helps inspire and build confidence in those of us stepping into different facets of this art form.

I'm 56 and have been shooting OCF since the 80s. Back then we used higher powered strobes with gas generators for AC, and medium format cameras with leaf shutters for a 1/500 sec sync. The easy route was to underexpose daylight (say 1/500 at f/16 or f/11) and add the flash-metered strobe to balance it out. A couple of not-so-quick Polaroid tests and power adjustments and start shooting. All that said, I really like your old school sensibilities of getting right in the camera, thus not having to spend eternity tweaking it in post. Less is more. Bravo!

This is a perfect example of how so many different elements, not equipment, are needed to make a good photo. Even after you had the whole exposure and colors looking perfect, the angle of composition corrected, it still wasn’t very pleasing because of the posing. Once the model turned and smiled in an instant of perfection, the camera was able to freeze an instant of her spirit, her soul, and only then you achieved the result of a collection of many elements at play working together.

My suggestion is for everyone video of behind the scenes of the photo shoot, you also create another behind the scenes separate video for the editing part, again not too detailed so people won’t get lost and bored, but useful enough and entertaining enough to capture us the audience, just the editing part, separate from the shooting part.

Excellent detail on how you took each shot. This is great for someone like me looking to learn how you worked up to your final shot. This is what is missing from most instructional videos on KZbin. Most show the final result and not what it took to get there. I'd love to see a look at your setup before you started with the lights and modifiers used and placement so we have a full idea of what you were planning and how you achieved it! Thanks for this video it made me subscribe!!

This is the first video that shows the mistakes and the step by step measures used to correct and obtain the shot you want. First of all, thank you for that as I am currently going from landscape Photography to portrait photography. I just purchased the Godox AD200 and was needing more instruction on how to use it. So this video was awesome! I was wondering how you got the hairlight on the model but then I saw it was coming from the sun. So do you expose for the background first without the model in the frame? Just wondering, gonna go out and practice and try to achieve the results like yours. Again, Thank you so much!
@fjhphoto
@fjhphoto Жыл бұрын
Yes, I pretty much always expose for the background with the subject in the frame as well so I can see if any light is falling on them. If there's a bright spot of light on them then it'll affect how I expose my photo. Ideally, I want the subject completely in shadow or fully in sun. If completely in shade highlights on their back is fine. Just don't want any light in front.

I have enjoyed the vast majority of your videos as you have improved so much within this last year. Thank you for this video which I know will help many of the newer photographers. You are a very talented photographer for your young age. But, slow it down a little, for me (34 yrs a pro photographer) it was a little hard to follow at first and then you jumped your point back and forth. Forgive my criticism, I don't usually do that to you. I follow you because I am proud of you as a fellow young Hispanic and love to see how you have grown and succeeded. I didn't have KZbin as I was first learning and photographers back then keep their secrets from everyone. Someday I will come to San Antonio and be able to meet you. Or if you are in the Dallas Ft. Worth area lets meet and talk shop. Good work my friend.
