In today's off camera flash tutorial I break down how I created my favorite shot from WPPI! Used my favorite portable lighting combo, the Godox AD400 Pro & 34" Beauty Dish, to create the photo. Highly recommend this combo for power and portability!

Another fantastic video. The content is getting so much richer with this new format you are using, gear, behind the scenes, demonstrating the edit, and going deeper into the lighting, all a very powerful combination. Feedback I want to offer: If I had to make a change, I would have spent a minute actually talking to the model, ask her to share her IG, etc, otherwise, this is fantastic, I feel like she got left out as far as saying hello to the audience. Thank you so much and I'm keeping my eyes open for the next video. I've left a like as well.

Great video. Could you explain more about that black and white layer and how it is used in a tutorial of its own?
@fjhphoto
@fjhphoto 5 жыл бұрын
william martinez I could do that. I know I rushed that part a bit but let me explain here. That black and white layer converts the image to just black and white but you can alter the brightness of certain colors. I always make the colors of the skin darker so blemishes appear clearly. That way when I dodge and burn I can get rid of them. Making the dark parts brighter to blend in and the bright parts darker. It's a layer to help identify those blemishes.

@10:00...cactus: yeah, I got a story. In the 80's I was assisting on a Jantzen shoot on Catalina Island, off the coast of LA. One side of the island is lush, the other barren and rough, with cacti. Naturally on a break the models and I were playing Frisbee. And as I attempted to snag an errant throw, I ran into a nice specimen. My upper thigh had about 5-7 needles in me....and the ends are like fishhooks, so difficult to remove. Er, painful. We couldn't....so they just removed me from the bush, and off to the hospital. Their tool of choice?; Visegrips!! THAT will get your attention, as does the leg paralysis from the poison. Kids......Don't play Frisbee around cacti. It's never pretty.

Wonderful video, if only everyone was as thorough as you we'd be seeing more great shots! Can I ask... 1 year on.. are you still content with the EZ Glow 34" BD for on location shoots, or have you found something better? How is the assemble and disassemble of this modifier? It looks like you'd have to completely tear it down for stowing away (take off both diffusion panels, remove dish etc to compress down etc)?

I’d love to get your opinion on the Glow EZ Lock Beauty Dish vs the ParaPop that you usually use. Is the light quality/softness very similar or do you prefer one over the other in regards to the light quality alone (not considering build quality or ease of use)? I would also love to see more tutorials on your editing process as I do really love your look! Thanks for sharing!
@fjhphoto
@fjhphoto 5 жыл бұрын
John Hanson the ParaPop is really awesome and a bit flexible too but it's main benefit to me isn't so much the quality of light but the fact that it uses replaceable ribs. I have dropped my ParaPop before and broke one and since the ParaPop comes with 2 I was able to fix it myself. The beauty dish is my favorite modifier and more affordable. Highly recommend it. It's more story and smaller yet produces nice soft light. I doubt I'll drop it and break it but if that happens I'd need to buy a new one.

Hi, The full body shots, from head to toe, your model seems for me to be short around 155cm and a bit chubby(?) . It's a bit hard for me to describe and it's not meant to be offensive at all. Your close shots she looks absolutely fine. Is it because of the 105mm or her shoes and outfit or the distance that make her look small? Thanks in advance. :) And sorry for my bad english...

You can get the same effect with even one AD200 for this specific shot. The AD400 was at half power so that's 200W which is full power on the AD200. I would recommend the 2xAD200 setup if you have one AD200 already. But if not then get the AD400. Lots of benefits to getting it including modeling lamp that can be adjusted from 10-100%, faster recycle times, and an improved color accuracy mode.

Ryan Schultz I basically only use one light anyway so getting my ad400 out and just worrying about it alone is better for me. It also has a very bright modeling lamp too that can be adjusted more fine tuned from 10-100%. The Twin Head adapter has 6 power levels and sometimes I want to get levels in between them.
