Tough to overestimate how powerful, graceful, and athletic a bull elk is. Up where I live, lots of people have 5' fences around their property. But if an elk wants in, that 5' fence won't even slow them down. They'll clear it without even scraping their belly. You can buy a fence extender that bumps your fence up to 8' if you really want to keep them out. So far, I've never seen one clear an 8' fence.

When I was 10 yrs old riding on the back of my grandfather's snowmobile one afternoon. We had been messing around having fun on the snowmobile which was the newest and fastest. We came the into the second meadow over the crest of the edge of what we called the gravel pit, it looked just like it sounds. We can up over the edge and before we could comprehend what happened an elk had jumped up over us on the snowmobile. It was snowing heavily so I think we came across the meadow and suddenly we were right there and he jumped so we didn't crash into him. He was huge and easily cleared us is all I can remember.

I saw a National Geographic special that was trying to locate a pack of wolves that they knew were in the area, as they were relocating they were walking down a gravel road and out pops this bull moose. The N.G. Photographers had never seen a moose before and now they were all of about 50 feet away from a very large bull with big antlers. They starred at each other for about 10 seconds and the moose slowly walked away but stayed on the road. The N.G. guy later said that he did not realize that moose were THAT big, he said it looked like a giant horse on steroids with antlers on it. I guess the big mature bulls are around 1500-1800 lbs, as a point of reference the bull Elk is around 700-1000lbs a big moose is about 7’ tall at the shoulder an elk about 4 1/2’. I was walking in a Provincial park in Saskatchewan Canada with my dog to go to the lake when we came face to face with a cow elk. We froze and my dog started barking aggressively standing it’s ground. She’s a black lab, very timid and I never ever saw her snarl and bark like that. She’d cower at a chihuahua. The elk trotted quickly towards us with its head down pawing the ground. I hid behind a tree the size of the one in this video. The elk circled the tree and we circled it to try keep some distance. It pawed the ground and flared its nostrils at me. Luckily my dog was on leash. I kept her behind my knees on a short leash to protect her from the elk’s long legs. I had a chuck-it thrower I hit the tree with and I yelled to make noise hoping to scare it away. It cornered us for 45 minutes. It would charge the tree. I was in boggy slop and had to hold onto the tree to circle it or I would have lost my footing. It wasn’t until I lowered my head that it charged the tree one last time and then walked away. Horribly scary incident. I got back to the camper soaking wet from the rain, white as a ghost and my dog and I were shaking. I was crying as the adrenalin I felt was over whelming. I was close enough to the elk I could have booped it’s nose! The thing was massive and incredibly beautiful. To this day if my dog is asleep and I startle her she jumps up and snarls and barks until she realizes it’s me. I didn't have my phone to get it on video - I mean there was little reception and I was going to the lake! It was fight or fight mode. An incredible and lucky experience. The Park Conservation Officer I reported it to said they had started calving that week and it probably had its young nearby it was protecting. The ek are a huge problem in the park. I think about that event frequently wondering the outcome if I didn’t just circle the tree waiting for it to back down. I am lucky and it awe of its beauty, strength and size.

An elk won't use its antlers to attack other animals, it will lock horns and wrestle other bull elk for dominance (the same way a white tail, caribou, red deer and moose do) and aside from that, it's a factor in whether a female is willing to mate. If that horse wasn't there, the elk probably still would have "won" that fight, it's bigger, way more muscular, and they're very sturdy animals. They can shake off grizzly bears, wolves and coyotes. Horse would get knocked over once or twice and have probably given up. Elk have evolved to fight, a horse hasn't, although it's way faster than an elk.

That’s what I was thinking
@Yoshikarter13 жыл бұрын
@@N_manMETA11 Even an 800-pound "lighter breed" horse outweighs a 700-pound bull elk. A horse kicks with a force of 2,000 PSI, a blow like that to the head can kill a tiger. That bear that got "shaken off" by an elk was a younger grizzly, still a relatively inexperienced hunter. Look up the footage of a wild stallion attacking an alligator if you seriously think a horse can't fight.

Mythic indeed. A little human boy got lost in the woods, in the Winter. He found a tree with wide, thick branches that acted like an umbrella to protect him from the falling snow, but the cold of the blizzard was going to kill him. The next day, rescue searchers found him, and to their shock, he was alive. He survived the night of freeing temperatures.. When they asked how,..he said 2 Elk showed up to his tree, and both of them laid around the boy, keeping him warm. Naturally they thought he was just hypothermic, and confused. ..Til they seen the spot he bedded down for the night,..and they saw the spot where the 2 giant elk also escaped the blizzard, under the same tree, and huddled around the boy. Of all the trees they could've chosen,..one without a human under it,..they still chose his tree, and laid next to him. SO they really are a mythic creature.

I'm a rural southern boy and I took a trip to Washington state when I was 18, and went up to Mount Rainier with my then-girlfriend. We went deep into the woods and stumbled upon a bull elk watching over a doe and some calves. It was probably the most intimidating thing I've ever experienced. I'm over 6ft tall but this thing towered over me and just stared us down as we slowly, quietly walked backwards until it was out of sight. Man should never forget that he is just a small part of nature.

Had the pleasure of going to Paradise on top of Mt Rainier while stationed at JBLM. After trekking around I was headed back to my car at nightfall and I remember a bull deer or elk or I dunno - not a hunter, just knew it was BIG - just standing there on the trail letting a few other people walk by and take pictures like it was Bambi's dad there specifically for the photo op. It was crazy amazing to see and so I share your sentiments.
