Hello and welcome back to the channel. Today I want to spend a few minutes with you taking you on a bull shark dive at a place called End of the Map, Bahamas.
And here comes one now. The bull shark. Big. Bulky. Fast. I've been with bull sharks during the day and at night. I've been with bull sharks in Fiji and here in the Bahamas.
They are beautiful creatures, very stout. As you can see, we're with males and females here at End of the Map. It's kind of a flat, hard pan bottom at about 65-70ft here.
As you can see, the bull sharks are not afraid to come in close. They tend to bump the camera more at night than they do during the day.
There's a lemon shark there in the background. As you can see, Bull Sharks are a very big bulky shark.
They are built for burst speeds to catch whatever prey they may be looking for.
According to one research study, they have a more powerful bite than the great white shark, and the great hammerhead.
Bull sharks can thrive in freshwater as well as saltwater. It's known as the Zambezi shark in Africa because they can swim upriver. Bull sharks give birth to live young.
The movie JAWS may have been based on a string of shark attacks off the coast of new Jersey in 1916, when a bull shark went upriver ten miles from the ocean.
So it's kind of interesting that, you know, great white sharks are blamed for a lot of the damage done by bull sharks.
They have a pretty diverse appetite they’ll eat stingrays, turtles, seabirds, dolphins. They are also known to also eat crustaceans like crabs, shrimp, starfish, sea urchins.
Remember, there are more than 500 species of sharks. Bull sharks were listed as near vulnerable, but now they're considered a common species.
If you notice, you know, when you're diving with like, a tiger shark, tiger sharks usually maintain like one depth as they are swimming around you.
Bull sharks do that kind of high to low, which means you have to keep your head on a swivel.
That's one of the things we always say in any shark dive, you have to keep your head on a swivel to watch where the sharks are.
And we use a buddy system underwater to keep this type of diving as safe as possible. There's some triggerfish in the background.
A lot of people will look at a shark like this, and say, “Where are the teeth?” The teeth will appear when the shark opens its mouth.
Bull sharks are ram breathers. Which means they must keep swimming to breathe.
Those are remoras with them, of course, as hanging out looking for a free snack.
That's Jim Abernethy. Jim pioneered this type of shark diving in the Bahamas. There's really nobody better to be in the water with than Jim Abernethy. He knows how to work with these sharks and he knows these waters. His dive briefings are detailed with a high emphasis on safety and a high emphasis that if you make a mistake underwater with these creatures, you probably will not come back.
So it is this is very dangerous work to do this type of photography. But, you know, sharks have gotten a bad rap.
They're a very misunderstood species. And bringing video like this and showing people that, yes, you can be with them.
I always equate it to like an African safari. You know, you're behind that camera, you've been briefed on how to work with the species, but if you're with lions in Africa, you're not going to get out of the truck, because if you get out of the truck, you'd be in trouble.
You wouldn't be solo in this area by yourself in the Bahamas because you get in trouble very quickly. So we use the buddy team. There are the bait crates. We use the bait to attract the sharks to the dive.
So that's the End of the Map in the Bahamas. If you like what you see, please subscribe to Space Shark on KZbin and Space Shark Earth on Instagram.
If you're interested in really kind of finding out the difference between what it's like to dive with the tiger shark and a bull shark, check out this video.
