Anyone hesitating getting a dog....because they dont live as long as we do. Let me tell you. Dogs are like fireworks. A intense bright light destined to only shine for a brief moment. But that moment is filled with joy, happyness and love. I dont know about you. But I think choosing to never see fireworks because the light does not last forever...is the wrong way to think. Yes you have to endure the dark when the show is over. But id rather have experienced that light in my life than never have seen it at all.

@@TrudyPatootie We had a mixed breed dog. In her later years she developed diabetes, lost her eyesight and also had a surreneal tumour. I had to give her indukin shots every day. When she got very much worse I was the only one in our family that decided it more kind and loving to put her down at the vets. The rest of the family was devastated because the dog became part of our family. Thank heavens our dog died the day before I was due to take her to the vet. One has to live with a dog to know what a special bond it can become. We now have a mini pinscher that belonged to my sister that passed away in 2017. My sister named her Layla. Layla is a handful but we all love her.

I never heard such a primal wail ...that came out of me as my husband took her to the Vet's to put her down. ( I couldn't) The day before the specialist informed us that she couldn't urinate on her own because of paralysis. I said that I would manually express her, but when I tried she bit me in pain. That was it... But I know that you know how difficult putting our dog down is, but their pain overrides any feelings of wanting them to stay with us. Mini pinscher...awwwww I love those little dogs. They are so fearless. Napolean Complexes ha... So nice of you to honor your sister by loving Layla. Sweet of you.

When I was born, my father had a dog. She was already 10 years old and had puppy's once (my father castrated her after that) and she was really sad she couldn't get pregnant any more, so she sort of adopted me and became really protective. She would bark and growl at every person/dog who looked at me in a way she didn't like and I loved her more than anything. She died when I was 6, I'm 18 now and I'm crying writing this. (But good news I got a puppy for my 18th birthday (2 month ago) and I'm going to get her and cuddle with her until I'm not sad anymore)

I had a english bulldog named Snoop. One of the best dogs I have ever had. They don't live long, so enjoy every minute you have with them. Snoop passed after 8 years and that was the saddest day in my life. My only regret about this breed is their short lifespan.

My tears well-up whenever I see this lovely bulldog and his "Brothers" - such love seems seldom to be seen in our friends these days. I love he and his "Brothers" so much, and yet they will be grown up and remember with great love their "loving protector" as they grew up, long after I am gone. We recently said goodbye to a family pup we had since I was a child and he was a child. Oddly enough, he waited until we got our second dog (a random rescue)until he passed. It’s almost as if he was searching for his replacement because he knew we would need something to love to fill that hole he’d leave behind. We all cried for weeks. I still cry looking at old photos and looking at his urn. I miss him so much it hurts but I look at the pup he chose and I hug him tight and I feel closer to him and I do my best to be the best parent to the little one he left me with 😓

I had a boxer who did exactly the same. She was my first baby. When my 2 daughters were born she became very gentle and protective. Even woke me up when my first born was having an allergic reaction to a vaccine. Probably saved her life. She passed away 2 1/2 years ago when she was 11 and the pain is still unbearable. Our new puppy has big shoes to fill. But I’m sure that with time and patience she’ll become the perfect dog too.
