Actually, "no seat" ticket normally means "no fixed seat". On high speed train, i believe everyone should get a seat. If you have the no fixed seat ticket, you can sit in any seat that is available, until someone shows up at any stop and claim the seat.

I believe that only applies for the G- trains, which is the narrowest defination of "high speed trains". I've taken D- and C- trains and I really did not find any vacant seats.

I recommend lower class tickets cuz d ppl r more friendly. I've met 2 young men in uk n China who had identical stories. Jobs were scarce n they went to d big city for interviews. All d surrounding aunties chimed in to encourage them. They r so kind n sweet!

Wonderful China! I used GOOGLE to search for relevant information, and it was shocking!China is still expanding its high speed train network year in year out until 2035 to 70,000 kms, now is 42000ish. I traveled in China by high speed trains many many times.The reason why take high speed train is they are comfortable and you can have a good experience with beautiful scenery while journey is boring...Now China train network is the best in the world... ultra fast, always on time (98% of the time), no strike.comfortable, not expensive.I Saw some Western 'experts' said that China would never show a profit on the High Speed trains.I guess they miss the point.Chinese government heavily invests in infrastructure to improve the lives of its people. It's not about profit first.

too bad you only had what looked like a couple hours there. I would have spent 1 day in shanghai and the remaining in either hangzhou, suzhou, or nanjing 😂. marco polo said hanzhou was the most beautiful city in china but that was obviously a long time ago. first time I was in hangzhou was about 25 years ago before all the development happened and it was quite nice. you were just on the touristy 'city' side of the lake. there's a lot more scenic routes and hikes you can take as you might have noticed in the background. I remember walking through a park there and thought if you wanted to make a girl fall in love with you, just take her on a stroll there lol. plus the city itself has a lot more cultural elements whereas most of what you see in shanghai is less than 150 years old for the most part. ps you could have moved about on the train with your 'standing' ticket. if someone else missed their train, you could have nabbed any empty seat 😆. there's also usually a dining cart so you could have grabbed something to eat and just sit for a while at the dining area.

Unfortunately I don't think you guys saw the best parts of West Lake. The true beauty of West Lake lies in the lesser known and frequented spots instead of the few overcrowded vistas (like the one near the shopping area). It's really for people to spend few days to slowly stroll and discover these quieter spots, as well as the nature/parks, monasteries and tea plantations in the surrounding mountains and soak in the poetic and zen vibes instead of short stops to snap a few shots. Oh well, maybe next time.
