I am 73 Yrs. old and recently cancelled Knee replacement surgery. I walk backwards on a track and backwards up my driveway 20-30% incline about 50 steps times 8-10 times. Recently I improvised using an industrial hand truck with weight plates secured by bungee to the hand truck.. Much cheaper solution to the sleds.

@@kobalt77 yep, if you can’t get a sled or treadmill, this is the free great option. The steeper the hill the better as you progress. Me too, bad knees. Another similar move is to use small boxes ( I bought mine from Mirafit in UK, and you can buy extra layers, they are primarily sold as aerobic boxes, but one is square, not rectangular, but you could use either, or any step)...or a Step...simply maintain a straight posture, and from a standing position, lower yourself by bending at one knee, as the foot of the other leg goes in front of the box. It takes time to go deep, but it is working in the same way as the sled and the backward walk, although it is more demanding due to the sheer vertical drop. Go slow as lower, which works the eccentric portion of the hams, strengthening those, whilst stretching the quads, but with wt on, which makes a big difference to normal stretches, as you increase your strength in a greater Range of Motion, and so become more athletic and more flexible. Win, win...especially as the agonising pain of many yrs begins to ease.

Encima looks like a monster compared to Ben but he had trouble keeping pace with Ben, impressive, will definitely try this out! I would say also that perhaps diet is a critical factor too: get rid of all seed oils (vegetable oil, canola oil, safflower, etc) which is a hard thing to do because almost all prepared foods have them, especially restaurant food. It is hard to rid the diet of them, but worth it, imho.

As a Functional Movement Coach the walking backward exercise with weights is a safer way to strengthen the quads than squats. My only objection is this technique is isolating the quads which is why people are feeling the burn. In my opinion, there should be other muscles engaged like your core and posterior chain muscles to assist in pulling the sled and not just your quads.
