Nomad white belt here, travel the country for work and trained in several gyms last year. I asked everyone to roll and had no idea I wasn't supposed to call higher belts 🤣

luckily my gym is fairly low population so rolling with higher belts is something that's always encouraged and I've found it to be incredibly helpful

I prefer it when everyone has the ability to say 'no'. Black belt all the way down to white. I like the sound of the JB gym culture.

This happened to me recently. I was in Brazil and visited a couple of gyms. Due to just traveling with a carry-on, I didn't brought a gi to save space and weight. In one academy in Sao Paulo a gi was borrowed to me however for the other spots in Rio, we had to do a mix of gi /no-gi. Unbeknownst to me, I went to my A game with a a brown and black belt and due to the scramble circumstances, I went for heel hooks once I got into favorable positions. The rounds were great but afterwards I was told that in Brazil they don't really play with heel hooks and it is recommended to not go for them as you might get into trouble. Lesson learned. To keep it safe, when visiting, don't go for heel hooks even if it is no-gi.

Wait... You can't call senior belts to roll with you? We do that all the time, and our Black Belts encourage us to challenge higher belts and learn from them. Weird culture.

It might be an old school thing, every academy is different- just something to consider.

I heard this too and I find it kind of silly. I think it makes sense only if the higher belt is any way uncomfortable saying no for any reason which they shouldn't have to be. I would respect the culture if I'm a guest but I call my coach out all the time and even talk shit and banter, it's a small gym and we're all acquainted or even friends.

We heel hook in the gi in my gym. I'm a blue belt.. Heel hooks should be legal everywhere! We don't crank that though. More catch and release.

I've been heel hooked visiting a new school by a blue belt in the gi. First time rolling with the guy, ever. I tapped right away, but i didn't think it was cool.

@@zodiac154 when it comes to heel hooks we feel you gotta check with your partner first. We feel your pain on this one. Definitely uncool way to treat a new visitor.

Rude jiu jitsu is the best 👌 But on the rare occasion that i visit a place. I treat it like regular rolls. 50 percent or less. Just stick to basic techniques till i understand the unwritten rules. Nice podcasts

The etiquette of not rolling with higher belts is ridiculous and a crazy show of ego, thai boxing the competitors will spend time with the newbies as much as anyone else, far better environment and far quicker to learn

I have to disagree, blue belts can not ask black belts to roll. Does the belt mean nothing then? If you don't respect the traditions then just go to an MMA gym.

The reason to train with a handicap like one handed or no handed is that it allows you to brake out of repeated patterns. When you remove one hand but play guard you will move your hips into other angles and space witch will open new avenues of thought, it will feel different but new things will open up. It also forces you to move your hips correctly and gain maximum efficiency rather then rely on your arm or Leg strength. If the hips are in the most efficient area for a specific move you can use less strength and increase longevity and inductance. As we get better at Jiu jitsu we can cut corners and hide it through our ability to read a bodies movements rather then refining our own.
