I have two male Rotties and a female WL GSD. In my experience the combo of both are complete security package. Mine are family house dogs and are great companions. The female GSD is almost ALWAYS the one who alerts the Rotts to anything unusual. She is way more protective- which could be because of her sex. What I like is she is vocal where as the Rotties are not. She will scare the burglar with her bark and GOD forbid - if they are stupid enough to break in - the Rotts will handle the rest.

Very interesting. I've been wanting a Rottie for a while. I'm told by seasoned owners that the Rottie is a sort of 'silent observer': He/she will observe a potential threat, discern the danger, alert his/her family of the pending danger and if necessary respond in kind: Vocally, or with an attack.

Actually in the process of breeding for look, they are destroying the look itself. I work in an uptown neighbourhood and I see people with cute German shepherd puppies. They sure paid a lot of money for them. Few months forward you see a dog that is not healthy, that walks funny due to the spine and hip anatomy of these over and bad bred show dogs. A very sad image. You feel very sory for the dogs, not for the owner who paid a lot of money to the breeder who possibly is totally legit to produce such unhealthy dogs. . On the other hand you can see, rarely, working line GS. Absolutely stunning they are.

I have working line GSDs. They are super intelligent and are superb problem solvers. Working line GSDs are a spectrum. There are highly prey-driven working line GSDs (typically operate as sport-dogs). There are others with a good balance of prey and defense drives (a patrol dog requires a good defense/prey balance with a higher weighting on the defense side), while a drug detection dog needs untiring hunt-drive. And so on. A good working line GSD, with a balance of prey and defense drives, and with an excellent nerve-base, is a bedrock solid dog. They will have a complete - complete - off-switch when inside the house. (all of my working line GSDs have a total off-switch inside the house), while being able to operate at 200mph when they are working and problem solving out in the field. During a 20+ hour drive, my working line GSD boy did not make a single whine during the entire trip. He just settled down and went to sleep in his crate. That requires a rock solid nerve-base, since a weak-nerved dog would be whining and fidgeting and causing a ruckus during such a long trip. He operates at 200mph in the field, but sleeps inside my bedroom on a separate bed of his own. At the same time, not a single mouse can get by (let alone a 2-legged or larger 4-legged creature), without him being aware of it. GSDs are also velcro dogs and you will never be alone, even when heading to the bathroom or while watching TV. They sense and figure out even the emotions running through your mind. Also, unlike Malinois, they mature slower but bond with their humans, far stronger. All of my GSDs were single owner dogs for the most part and don't bond easily to a new owner right away.......the new owner will have to take the time to bond with them and earn their respect.

@@zcalex7660 You're wrong in my opinion. I work with Rottweilers who even at the start of their training (so untrained) will and absolutely do protect their family. There are two things you might be forgetting. Firstly, a Rottweiler is a VERY dominant breed. It will only protect it's family or things it respects. If a Rottweiler isn't protecting - You're not worth protecting in it's eyes. Secondly, Rotties are wait n' see dogs. They don't respond until they absolutely have too. A lot of people ''testing'' their Rottweiler are just plain idiots. Most of the time you can see the Rottweiler just isn't being fooled into thinking it's a situation in which it needs to act. Another common reason some dogs who are from guarding breeds do not protect is over socialisation. In my eyes this is great, but it's a fact that over socialisation means your dog is sanitised to threats (which you really want as a pet dog). Of course you can then train them into protecting, but most people just assume they are too soppy (which they are not). Out of all breeds, both the Rottweiler and Doberman do not need training to protect. You have in actual fact got to train them to keep this instinct in check. You do not train them for protection using normal methods. My most hated thing in the world is hearing (mostly Americans I have to say), I'm getting a Rottweiler for protection. They make so many mistakes and often end up giving the dog up because it wants to kill everyone and everything. At around 18 months Rotties will start to want to keep you safe without you making the dog even more threat minded. It's sad. All these people are doing is ultimately hurting the breed, and making their dog troubled and stressed.

As a person who has had both...German Shepherds are overall better. But like this gentlemen stated if you have a fairly relax/city life and do not have the time or access to things like parks or open fields and don't actively enage in outdoor activities then a German shepherd isn't the dog for you. They need a lot of stimulation...and tend to act up if they don't get any. Rottweilers (when compared to GSD) are less work and more relaxed.
@dylvasey
@dylvasey 5 жыл бұрын
I guess you've not had working lines in that case. He did mention he wanted that and in that scenario a working Rottweiler needs much more stimulation than a GSD.
@dylvasey
@dylvasey 5 жыл бұрын
You're about to understand that the ''short'' haired Rott actually sheds like a mofo. In regards to health concerns the GSD is in serious trouble because of what we've done to the breed sadly. Rotties also have major issues with cancer amongst other things. You'll also discover that the Rottweiler needs a job. It is NOT less work as you put it. If you have a bored Rottweiler, you'll have a destructive Rottie and with that bite force, even walls are not safe. If you think you're about to have an easier job raising a Rottie than you are a GSD, you really should think again. Both breeds are highly intelligent and need stimulation multiple times a day. My own dog ate a table when he was a pup (he was left alone for five minutes). I have a 135lb male working Rottweiler that comes from German (I'm in Europe) championship lines. He is now six and trained to a ridiculous level. He loves scent work and has been trained to work with the police. I can promise you had I known just how much work was involved in this (keep in mind I have always raised large breed dogs such as Mastiffs, Dobermans & other non-working Rotties) I would have had to think twice about it. The reason Rottweilers do not make good police dogs (the only reason) is that massive bite force. A GSD can bite someone its ordered to chase and not really hurt them. A Rottweiler will break bones. In regards to being a family dog, there simply isn't a better large breed dog than the Rottie. They need to be introduced to a new baby (if one comes after they do) but other than that they are exceptional. The only training needed in this regard would be for the dog to calm down when children are around. They are large, but often do not realise how large they are. They can bump into kids sending them flying. You are correct on saying Rottweilers do not need to be trained to defend you. The problem with them is actually the opposite. They need to be taught when to not protect you. Please remember socialisation and training (from eight weeks) is NOT optional. My own dog went through a stage (as most Rotties do) at about 18 months old of simply not allowing people to enter my home - Regardless of if I was there. To this day, he is not interested in other people and flat out refuses to be stroked by a stranger. You're about to go on an amazing journey that will test you to your core, but eventually you'll end up with an amazing dog. Good luck!

As someone who owns a working line German shepherd I pretty much 100% agree with everything you said. They are extremely smart and driven. This combo makes them amazing at pretty much every task you present them. But also means you absolutely have to be on top of your training all the time. You need to give them new or very engaging challenges all the time because otherwise they make their own fun, and will take advantage of anything where you slip up on keeping order. The only thing I would say about home protection is that very few dogs of any breed are truly natural home protectors, in the sense that they will genuinely protect you by attacking a threat without training or cueing. But my German shepherd absolutely scares the living daylights out of all visitors until I out her and even if she knows someone she will still keep them out until I've given her the all clear. After I've given the all clesr she will generally be friendly and appear relaxed take commands and pats from strangers if I tell her to but doesn't let strangers out of her sight and will look to me anytime something seems off to find out if she needs to switch on or not. She like most working line dogs of any breed I've met is very territorial and will take on anything that comes into the yard or house unannounced. She has 0 protection training and I've had to work to teach her to understand when to leave things alone. She also naturally switches on around any people acting or appearing suspicious or aggressive at all or that make me feel concerned when we are out in public despite her diminutive size people will always give you and her a wide berth if she gives them even a small stare. My friend's working line shepherd completely bent out a steel fence panel because someone had broken into the neighbours yard. However I had a friend who had a petline German shepherd and one day he looked out his window and saw the dog playing with a stranger in the yard he hadn't let in. So I'd say it depends on the dog as it does with any breed but for the most part even an untrained working line shepherd will perform role of a so called "natural protector" .

So I have show GSD. They have OFA good or excellent hips. They have very strong herding instincts. They are protective, but they aren't exactly a protection sport dog. If you are going to get a GSD with good hips, the show lines of North America have nearly eradicated the disease. I have taken in BYB GSD, and x-rayed their hips-- all dysplastic. All with coyote rears. Zeke, you're just wrong about the show dogs and their hips. We've been getting our dogs x-rayed for years and made dramatic efforts getting them away from hip dysplasia. People hate on these dogs because there is an internet lynch mob that thinks the rear affects the hip joint placement. There is a ton of hip dysplasia in the breed, but it's not in the AKC or SV show dogs. Also, you did not show any of these dog in full gait. You took little snippets of them in slow motion. The correct AKC gait is one of the most beautiful dogs in motion in the world, and I'm not saying this because I'm breed blind. I used to hate these dogs, and then the bastards won me over. My dogs are trustworthy with kids and other dogs. They aren't bouncing off the walls like a lot of the bitework-bred dogs, especially the ones from Eastern Europe. It is irresponsible that so many have been told to get these over the show dogs, because they don't have the rear angulation. They don't have the rear angulation, but they also don't have the off-switch. If you'd like to learn about American show GSD and how they improved the hips, please read this interview with Jimmy Moses: www.thedogplace.org/ProFiles/Moses-James-Interview-028.asp

Although my GSD is very nice and loving, working lines because I used to do protection work, or French Ring with my rotties and wanted to do so with a GSD. There is no comparison. Barks all the time, too energetic for me (I'm 74) and very dominant...extremely dog aggressive. (never was attacked by a dog since I got him at 2 months old)...My next dog will be a rottweiler for sure.

All other reasons were on point except that the German shepherds do not have natural instinct to protect homes. Wow! Never imagined that you being such experienced with the canine world would say so. I have a German shepherd here in India. No training at all. None.. But he knows who to attack and who not to. And NO urarmed person can enter through those gates if he is there. There has been an instance where a fairly big guy(one of my staffs) entered the lawn, unaware of him being there.. Killer, my GSD would have literally killed him that day if I did not reach on time.. Apart from this, he has stood his ground on every single occasion he waa required to and you're saying they are not natural home protectors. Rottweilers are great dogs and had one before him but I would trust both with my property and life.. Also, here in India, majority of us do not train our dogs.. Not even the basic training but still do their jobs with 100% efficiency. Anyways, to each his own. Nice video 🙂

@@Gwyllgi Apart from size, I dont see any reason why GSD is not a good dog for property protection. As I said, I have had both dogs and both only for property protection and both did their jobs well. See, it all depends on the dog, not entirely on the breed..I have witnessed incidents where Labradors or even pugs stood their ground..and sometimes even a GSD or Rot or doberman retreats if counter attacked..

Never would i pick a rott over a german shepherd for family/home protection.. i get the opinion part though everyone has their opinion on looks... if that was the main reason okay.. but sounds like u needed family loyal and home protection dog as key.. and that is like the main genetic strong points of german shepherd lol.. they have far better earns and smell than a rotty and are always in protection mode more so than a rott.. a witty intruder could sneak past a rotty... good luck sneaking past a german shepherd in their home.... not guna happen they will smell u before u even make it up the driveway and be on you like glue

If you want a protection dog, all statistical values long term numbers will reflect German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois are by far the best choice anyone can make for defensive, offensive and protection animals, although I owned a purebred Rottweiler for 14 years quite long lived for a Rott he was so much disabled due to hip problems the last 2 years I kept him alive too long. This guy loved his dog which did I, but from an objective point of view......protection, security German Shepherds or Malinois, the numbers are still out on South African Boer Boers.

I have both breeds at the moment. I can’t choose one over the other but some of the information you give is totally wrong. If you own the gsd from. Reputable breeder chances your dog to have health issues ie hip dysplasie etc won’t come out. Plus, all big dogs have the tendency to have hip dysplasie if they are not matched correctly while mating. House protection is also what a german Shepherd is also good at.

Aesthetically, I prefer the molosser breed types like them. Those large heads. 😍 Rotties being a top pick. For sure, one day, my next dog will be a Rottweiler or an American Bully.

The working line German Shepherd is the ultimate home protector, particularly those from Czech and East German breeding lines. They are naturally protective, territorial, fearless and dominant. The Rotties I've seen are mostly lazy and affectionate. Working line German Shepherds aren't affectionate to strangers, and barely show affection for their owners. A German Shepherd can go all day and handle extreme sub zero temperatures, whereas the Rottie cannot. There are plenty of videos of German Shepherds dominating Rotties, because it's their nature to lead. I don't recommend them for people looking to have family pet because they need socializing, tasks, DAILY exercise and proper training or they can be dangerous. I have a Czech male and a German show female and the differences between them are huge. German show line don't have the drastically curved backs and mangled up hind quarters of the American show line, by the way.

I am German Shepherd guy and I agree 100% with your points in regards to the angled back on GSD . I only buy my dogs from breeders in Europe mostly farm dogs with straight backs. They are bigger, heavier, and with better temperament. Way larger than police K9s. I absolutely think the show dogs are a disgrace on any breed . Check the working line border collie for reference and you will see how different the working line is compared to the dogs we have in the USA. It is the same on every breed, even Dobermans are heavier in Europe instead of the skinny ones we have here. I like your dog and thank you for the videos.

Rotties - a burglar would be inside your house before the dog would know about it. But look out once they wake up Shepherds - will know that there is someone up to no good a mile before they reach your house. For a family guard dog the shepherd is about the best you can get if you can handle shedding. Great for families with kids and babies. Will protect their family until death. Remember, guard dogs need to alert and deter possible intruders before they enter your property. Pretty much the whole point of having a guard dog. As stated in video, stay away from show lines. Research and understand their genetics and you and your family will have a true best friend for life!

Rottweilers, Dogo Argentinos, Cane Corsos, Fila Brasilieros, etc. are examples of brachycephalic guard dog breeds. German Shepherds, Doberman Pinchers, Japanese and American Akitas, Beaucerons, Belgian Malinois, Groenendaels, and Tervurens, etc. are examples of dolichocephalic guard dog breeds. People like us, who have livestock guardian dogs (such as Kuvasz), are Mesocephalic (Half and half/ moitié moitié) dog breed lovers. Pakistani Bully Kuttas are an example of this category also.

But he's comparing why he chose the breed, not the dog itself. There's always acceptions but it's not smart to choose a breed you don't prefer or are unsuited for, on the off chance it's capable of what your needs are. That's actually a cool idea if he told us (if he got to pick from the litter) why he chose Roscoe, what characteristics made him drawn to that specific pup vs the rest.

there is no dispute over whether or not a particular dog can do some particular task better than such and such. even a barky chihuahua is going to afford your home and family with a high degree of security. give this guy a break. focus. listen to what he has to say. the subject matter is his choice of breed. maybe you can afford 2 or 3 or maybe even 4 dogs. but if you can afford only one and one only dog how will you choose?

He kept it real and should be good. Hopefully the offended stayed to the end and heard him say the GSD is way more intelligent, athletic, and faster than a Rottweiler. Going off purpose and aesthetics is what every dog person should do. Love your dog before they get in your door. I can see how long hair upkeep and a potentially larger genetic gene pool of degradation would put people off a GSD. I'm personally researching the Dutch Shepherd as my next breed coming from the loved Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

I agree with you about the GSD, as an owner of a working line GSD, i can say they are high-energy, high-maintenance dogs, i personally love the manic-energy and I find I enjoy the push of them, but the health and genetic lines of the breed are crazy! The GSD world is very corrupt, and its hard to get a dog that well balanced, and you see a lot of people pick up working line pups that become unstable adults or show-line pups with no drive to work. The GSD world needs a real overhaul, that being said I love the breed, and love owning GSDs, but I do agree with your assessments.

dogs acclimate to what they're used to. even poodles can spend the winter in the cold outisde freezing winter IF THEY HAVE DOG HOUSE. i knew a rott that was raised inside and couldn't cope with any extremes of temperature. my rott could not cope with real cold, but if it was not so cold it was real fun to watch her tunneling in the snow and tracking small game in the snow. so much of dog personality has to do with the way they're raised from puppyhood. you want a dog that doesn't want to be inside? most every dog you get will want to be with you wherever you are. you are the pack. you are the provider of food, and the pack leader. that means a lot to a dog. it's in humans too, but fitting into the pack and being a part of the pack is real important to dogs.

if a person is choosing between rott and german shepherd they have quite a hard decision to make. here's my take: rotts are quiet. not barking so much. rotts are not so horny. german shepherds hump everything in sight. i've even been humped by female german shepherds. intelligence: that one has to go to german shepherds. however, the rott will do everything you expect it to do. except swim. i talked to the breeder about that. he told me that some rotts can't swim. mine could not swim. dominance: dominance is a big thing for rotts. learn to use that trait in their training. health problems: it is my opinion that the akc has almost destroyed the german shepherd breed. i think this video touches on that subject so far as show dogs are concerned.
