Ferguson TED20 Barn Find, Lets get it going Part 2

In this video I work on the TED20 just to try and get it running. This video is assembling the Zentih 28G carburettor and as I could not buy a float at the time I solder the old one up.

Hi lance, my JD fuel guage started doing strange dances depending on the bumps, one minute full then empty. When i dismanteled the sensor the float was puntured and had been filled with a couple of wine corks, through time the corks were half saturated with fuel. I had to make a new one to get by till i could get a replacement. I epoxied the corks to make them somewhat fuelproof till the replacement arrived, just as well as it took almost 6 months. When i put the new one in the one i made was still as good as new. I have also repaired motocycle carb floats in the same way to get moving again. The good thing in this is i had to drink the wine once uncorked, as a bonus. cheers Derek

G Day Harrold, Yes the bead blaster does a great job alright, don't know how I got on without it.

How did you beadblast without destroying the delicate areas? Have you tried vapour blasting?

This is awesome, you are the only other person besides me that thinks it's OK to sand blast a carb. I work on Honda 600 2 cylinder cars and rebuild carbs. I use super fine almost dust grade sand for blasting the carb bodies. I have learned not to blast the area with accel pump check valve that does not remove. After blasting I use super hot soapy water to wash then high pressure blow dry. Never had a problem but people look at ya funny so I just never say.

I bead blast them with fine glass beads, leaves a lovely finish.

600miles have you ever tried either bicarbonate or walnut shells to blast sensitive pieces?

Nice pretty carb cleaned up nice. Hopefully none of the internal drilled passages are blocked by rust.

Hi Lance top stuff mate , I have a TEA 20 that ticks over nicely at idle but for some reason starts to hunt at high revs which part of the carb would adjustment would cure that ,any ideas ?

G'day Lance those two parts of the tear down and rebuild of the carbie were great, but they still are a mysterious piece of equipment to me. I'm looking forward to part 3, that sand blaster does a fantastic job you would think that was a new part! Anyway mate that was very interesting thank you regards John. PS when they built your shed did they put strip foam under the iron? The last shed and veranda we build my father we used it and it stop the creeping.

G day John, Yes the bead blaster does a great job but it is important to clean it afterwards properly to get all of the glass beads out. The shed iron was just screwed down and it is quite noisy at times but I mainly only notice it when filming, other times I am deaf to it.

I have just rebuilt exactly the same carburettor. When the engine is off and I forget to turn off the fuel, the carburettor floods. I assume this is due to the float not fully closing the inlet valve. I tested the float and it floats perfectly well and is in better shape than the one in the video but I do not know how to bend it so that it closes the inlet properly. Are you able to do a demo of how to set the float by bending it?

Just bend a little on the two arms going to the floats and try and keep them even.

Have you ever tried copper coat on threads? It works great for me.

Yea and other anti seizes, I get worried about galvanic corrosion with alloy parts and the different metals

That is an updraft carb.

I only run mine on petrol now a days.
