Great information- It's nice to see a professional who is willing to share selfishly because he cares about seeing others take responsibility for their health. If I'm ever in Dr. McClanahan's area, I will make an appt.; however, in the meantime, I must do for myself b/c I live in rural Texas where intelligence/education and active lifestyle do not coexist.

In another video you mention it is not hereditary, yet my brother and mother both have bunions, along with myself. I’ve had it since I can remember, definitely since 5 years of age. I had surgery around that time to implant a STA-PEG (subtalar arthrorisis implant), and therefore was under the care of a podiatrist since before that time, who explained that our bunions were inherited (hence why we all had it). Mine does not cause pain and I still have full range of motion and flexibility. I also have extremely flat feet, however was quite active in running without much negative affect.
@juanitanixon3871
@juanitanixon3871 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe hereditary in the way that not walking or standing properly, in as much as improper foot wear, causes the bunions. I know in my case it was being on my feet all day and not having the strength in my legs to stand properly, gave me bunions. Same problem with my mom. So yes, I inherited that weakness and bad posture from my mom. And we both suffer bunions.

@VegasStreetLights
@VegasStreetLights 9 жыл бұрын
Late reply. Exercise is essential to keep the muscles of your feet strong. With just fascial release of your foot muscles there is greater chance the bunion will come back. Exercise and techniques such as these should be practiced in tandem. For synergistic effect.

Yes!. But you need to switch to wide toe box shoes (barefoot/minimalist) and wear CorrectToes imo. You should try on new shoes with the CorrectToes on to make sure they're wide enough. Even better if you can get some toe socks or anatomical socks like Plus12. My bunion was about a 20 degree angle in. Barefoot shoes stopped the pain entirely. I still have a way to go until the big toe is straight, but now after only three months of CorrectToes and stretches, the angle is more like 15 degrees and it's not pushing on my second toe. My other foot which had a very slight beginnings of a bunion now has none. The big toe and second toe have a decent gap between them when standing, and I can splay my toes so that there's half a centimetre between all the toes.

Problem is, once the patient puts shoes back on, all that soft tissue and joint mobilization work flies right out the window.

We encourage folks to wear barefoot shaped shoes. And use the shoe liner test when shoe shopping, to ensure proper splay and enough room for your foot to be a foot!

@phillydragonfly you're assuming the person is wearing the wrong shoes. Some of us wear foot-shaped, wide toe box barefoot shoes.

That person has no bunions! You need to show someone with advanced bunions! I had to finally have surgery on my left bunion because it was so severe due to my fallen arches and resulting severe pronation. I just ordered the Correct toes to hopefully prevent a new bunion from forming. My big toe has already started moving inward...6 months after surgery and despite wearing orthotics most of the time. I really have fallen arches.

Not hereditary? lol Are you against evidence??? My Grandma and Mother have them. They walked barefoot most of their lives living in a 3rd world country.

It's disheartening to see a health care professional dip their bare fingers into an unguent that one would presume is not just used on this one individual... Why is he not wearing a glove?
