Hi Guys, today I’m reviewing the Bunn Velocity Brew Coffee Maker. This unit brews 4 to 10 cups or 20 to 50 ounces in 3 to 4 minutes.

LINK to Permanent Filter: amzn.to/2bbXl1E
LINK to Paper Filters: amzn.to/2b6pRVf
At 14.3 inches tall, 7.1 inches wide and 13.8 inches deep, it is large and will take up some counter space. Any restaurant you visit, will have a Bunn Industrial coffee maker and that’s what Bunn is known for. This coffee maker is designed and assembled in the USA. Of course some of the parts are from other countries like most “designed and assembled in the USA” products. The look of this coffee maker is very industrial, it’s not compact and pretty like a lot of home coffee makers. This unit stands out from most other coffee makers because of it’s stainless steel hot water tank. Just about every other coffee maker available today has a plastic tank. The carafe is glass and has this weird looking spout with a plastic piece but that prevents dripping and actually works well. The warming plate is porcelain coated. The unit comes with an instruction manual, this descaling tool. Paper filters are included - looks like 30 or 40 maybe. With most coffee makers, you only get a few filters if any at all.
With standard coffee makers, you pour in water, put the coffee grounds in, turn the unit to on and it brews. The Bunn is a little different. If you want six cups of coffee, you can’t just pour 6 cups of water in the tank and it will brew. The tank needs to have about a carafe of water in it. That water stays hot as long as the machine is left on. When you want to brew, put the coffee in, pour in the 6 cups of cold water and 6 cups of hot water from the tank will pour over the coffee and into the carafe. When the lid is closed, this little piece acts as a mechanical valve plunger. The machine keeps the water in the tank hot so it’s ready to brew at any time.
To make coffee, put the coffee in the basket first. I’m using one of the included filters. Then pour in 6 cups of cold water. I’m using filtered water because my tap water is awful. Don’t close the lid. Put the carafe on the warming plate making sure it’s centered. Turn the warmer switch on. Now close the lid. Water comes out almost instantly. If you close the lid before putting the carafe on the plate, you could have a mess. So the 6 cups of coffee brewed in 2 1/2 minutes. The coffee is extremely hot. There’s no dripping while pouring so the carafe is designed well. Tastes very good.
You have to remember to shut off the coffee maker, it doesn’t shut itself off after a while like some other machines. There’s no programming at all - you can’t set it ahead of time to make coffee in the morning. There is no way to tell how much water is in the tank. Some of the water left in the tank could evaporate. If you’re traveling or not going to be using the unit for a long time, drain the water in the tank by turning the unit upside down.
The glass carafe and brew funnel should be cleaned after each use. It is dishwasher safe top shelf only, I prefer to hand wash it. Wipe down the unit with a damp cloth when you need to. Every 3 months, clean the sprayhead tube. A deep cleaning should be done every 3 months and there are detailed instructions in the manual.
This is an extremely basic machine that is simple to operate with just one button. I like that there is no smell of plastic that you get from many other coffee makers. Since there is hot water in the tank at all times, you could use it for hot tea or making oatmeal in the morning, it’s like instant hot water. If you drink a cup of coffee in the morning and that’s it, then this unit wouldn’t make sense for you. I would recommend this for people who drink a lot of coffee or those with a family of coffee drinkers. The coffee brews quickly, is very hot and tastes good.
If you want to try this Bunn, I’ve put a link in the description below. Subscribe for more reviews and I’ll see you next time. Thanks for watching :)

Thank you for this video. I had a hard time setting up. This is my first coffee maker and the instructions don’t tell you what or why you do any of the steps. You helped explain that the water going into the tank makes and audible sound which is not mentioned in the instructions. This made all the difference and now I understand why I have to do what I have to do.

You mentioned about the energy used. Nobody answered, so here it is. 800 watts (most coffee makers use much more) heating up the cold water (lasts about 10 minutes). Then it sits 24/7 keeping the tank warm at 30 watts. The warming plate is a separate circuit and uses between 30 to 60 watts when on. The beauty of keeping the tank hot besides fast coffee, is bacteria doesn't grow inside the machine like other coffee makers. They are so unsanitary compared to the Bunn.

I have brewed coffee with Bunns for years, both the restaurant and home makers. With the home makers, if you prefer decafe, they make a spray nozzle that slows the flow of water into the basket allowing a longer brew time required for many decafe coffee grinds. Also, Bunn claim to fame is they created paper coffee filters. World headquarters is in Springfield, Illinois. If you don't make coffee nearly every day, this is probably not the coffee maker to purchase. Why? Small amounts of water will continuously evaporate. This isn't noticeable when brewing every day. But if you skip a few days, pour in a pot of water, then your carafe fills short. Also, I use purified drinking water when brewing. It doesn't have the minerals and contaminants that tap water has, resulting in a more consistent brew and in less tank cleaning. It is simply the best coffeemaker for most coffees.

The only coffee maker I've ever owned, and I love it. The only time I turn the unit off is if I'm going to be gone for more than a few days. I previously had this model with the glass carafe and warmer but upgraded to the Bunn Thermofresh several years ago. I like it a lot better. On the thermofresh model, there is no warmer as the carafe is an insulated stainless steel thermos type carafe that easily keeps the coffee hot for several hours. Either way, I highly recommend a Bunn! After all, there's a reason why Bunn is the gold standard that dominates the restaurant/commercial use space.

I'm looking for a strong cup of coffee and maybe enough room to make enough coffee for two if my wife catches the coffee bug. I've reviewed the Cuisinart 12 cup which makes good coffee - you can buy it here: amzn.to/2cHLB9B I will be reviewing a 5 cup Zojirushi soon so subscribe to stay tuned for that. It's of course much smaller and may meet your needs if it makes a good cup of coffee. A budget option is the Black and Decker 5 cup - you can watch that review it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqi4qq1jg9ilr5I Hope that helps!

The Bunn-made coffee is not as hot as that from a standard drip coffee maker. The Bunn keeps the water at 200 degrees F. Standard drip coffee makers have to heat the water to 212 in order to boil it and create the pressure to push the water up into the basket. Brewing with boiling water is inferior - so is brewing for a long time. That's why the Bunn is so great. You get a fast brew with the correct temperature. Hurray!

If it works, mine never worked POS ALERT POS ALERT this machine stinks so bad out of the box, smelled like chemicals badly. Then I followed the instructions on filling and I knew this was not the machine for Me. the machine is real simple but the use is not, fill the carafe 2 or 3 times the machine will drip when its full, now that you have filled it, you can PLUG IT IN, now turn it on, wait 15 minutes for water to warm up then it brews, well this part never happened for me so I am speculating here. I waited and waited, I went to Ralphs and bought a $25 Mr Coffee while I was waiting got home brewed a pot with Mr Coffee in 7 minutes and still nothing from the BUNN, I tried 3 times and the BUNN failed all three times, it made coffee on my second attempt but it was not even hot and tasted like crap

We just bought today, and I've gone through 5 pots of RO water so far trying to see if the plastic smell goes away, but so far no luck. It's bad enough that we'll return and try to find something 100% stainless. It's too bad they don't sell a stainless funnel and/or sprayhead, or this would be an excellent coffee maker. It makes no sense that Bunn would design a stainless tank without offering stainless for everything.

Just a small heads up. While first heating the unit, you don't want the craft warmer on. It over heats the craft. On the craft it warns to discard and replace if it's been headed empty. Having said that our larger unit at work has had the craft left on overnight evaporating off the water and burned the leftover coffee but we've not replaced it.

The Bunn-O-Matic is a good coffee maker. One of the few that can best it is the Techivorm Moccamaster, as it does a better job at keeping the water heated at a proper temperature consistently while arguably being better built. But, you also have to spend a bit more money to get one compared to the Bunn.

The Techivorm Moccamaster is fine. But the Bunn water temperature is also very consistent. And as a bonus, if the power goes out... you'll probably want a cup of coffee. You can do that with a Bunn. Don't wait too long, as the tank will start cooling.

It appears to be a solid machine and simple but the manual could add a bit more toward clueing us into the principle of operation in terms of the tank water heating. I think the manual should have something like: with tank water full the unit may be left on for extended period of time. This video clarifies the questions I have about leaving the tank heater switch on for an extended period. I won't do that if I leave the house, but now I feel comfortable turning it on before bedtime so I have instant brew in the morning. On day one I waited the 15 minutes in the winter darkness at 5am for the tank to heat up first before I got my lifesaving brew :) Over cautious me! One more thing: not the best coffee machine unless you drink more than small amounts of coffee. I do miss my manual Mr. Coffee machine for its simplicity.

Oh, I forgot to add: I use an old Thermos brand stainless steel vacuum bottle that you can find at garage sales to keep my coffee after brewing. Fill the Thermos up with hot water and let it set for a minute or two. Drain, and then fill the Thermos with the hot coffee. The Thermos will keep it hot all morning and warm through the afternoon. After a couple of months of use, coffee will buildup within the Thermos vacuum bottle. BrewRite Coffeemaker Cleaner or similar product to clean it. It will return back to its sparkling stainless steel shine. Never use soapy water in the Bunn or in the Thermos ever.

Your best buying an older bunn with a plastic tank. I owned the model shown here with the stainless steel tank and a hole rotted threw it. Because the stainless steel isn't actually the tank. It's underneath the stainless steel. The water got in-between and rotted it out. The older models with the plastic tanks are much more reliable built to last.
@BillW50
@BillW50 Жыл бұрын
I disagree! Bunn always used stainless steel hot water tanks. The tray on top is usually plastic for home users. And the older plastic trays use to disintegrate from the heat of the stainless steel tank (80's and 90's). I dunno, like in 5 to 7 years and it would leak water as fast as you can pour it in. But in the last 20 some years, different plastic and it doesn't happen anymore. This one I am using now is over 20 years old and the ones today are identical. I only had to replace the thermal fuse once and that was it. This one will probably outlive me.

I wish you had inspected all the parts up front, in the first minute. I wanted to know how it's made, not how to use it. Specifically, does hot water contact plastic? The filter basket looks plastic. So why am I spending so much more for a Bunn? That's the selling point, at least on higher end models. I can choose from two dozen coffee makers with plastic filter baskets for a lot less. After the amount of research I've done, I don't think an affordable, non-plastic, drip coffee maker exists. You do mention whether it has the smell of plastic or not. I have no idea whether I can smell levels of plastic that are toxic if ingested.

As in, you only want coffee in the morning before leaving for work, but the heater stays on after you've left the house, when you get home, and when you go to bed? So when you don't want coffee, it's still hot? What an absolute waste of electricity 😂 I've never heard of a domestic drip machine that doesn't just heat the water when you actually need it.

Also surely if you wanted to make 2 jugs or more, you couldn't just straight away refill with water for a second batch, because it would come out cold? With a normal drip brewer, if you wanted to make a second jug straight away, you'd just need to refill with water and coffee and press the on button again. I've heard it takes 15 minutes for the water to get back up to temperature.
