Very “famous” local chain that does great Xi’an. *Bunny Chow* - A business colleague and wife are from SA and Zimbabwe respectively. Europeans. She invited me over for dinner and made Bunny Chow but we all had individual plates. Communal is traditional, eh? *Excellent episode. One of my favorites from Auckland. Love the unique dishes.*

Hi Tosh. String hoppers are just fantastic. Love eating them and love getting to watch (and film) them being made. We didn't go to Xi'an Famous Foods while in NY. Xi'an food bar has a few branches around Auckland which is great when we get cravings. Neat you had bunny chow at someones house. That would be fun. Yeah the guy at the restaurant was telling us all about how fun it is to grab one and all dive in for a communal fest. So neat. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Thomas 😀

There are several stories I’ve heard on the origin of bunny chow. It’s name is a corruption of the Barnia caste in India, who are predominantly bankers, moneylenders, and general merchants. The term is Bengali in origin. The British took a lot of Indians and what are now Malaysians to the English/non-Afrikaner part of South Africa as basically indentured labour and formed part of what are referred to as “Cape coloureds”, along with the mixed race offspring of whites and blacks- which was against the law during Apartheid. The version I originally read was that they weren’t allowed in white restaurants, so some restaurant owners used to serve them out of the back door. A government standard loaf of bread was halved, the crumb removed and a curry of some description- more likely than not a vegetable curry- poured into the bread bowl and the crumb could be used to scoop up the curry and sop up the juice. Then you eat the bowl, so no washing up! Another variant is to not use a bread loaf but to drop a ball of bread dough into oil and deep-fry it until you get a crust on the outside and the crumb inside is cooked. Loving your videos, guys.

THANK YOU for this hunger making vlog. There's some Sri Lankan restaurants in Cincinnati, Ohio maybe after Mother's Day. AGAIN SUPERB GREAT VLOG 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 THANKS!!!!! SO HUNGRY NOW 😭😭😭😭😭😭

Umm for the south African food preparation. I just got a bit annoyed when he had no gloves as he prepared it. I'm pretty sure the foods delicious but ..... Cmon dude
@ChasingaPlate3 жыл бұрын
It’s not common at all to use gloves when preparing food in the kitchen here in NZ. We get this comment a lot when travelling too but there have been studies that say gloves can be less hygienic as people don’t change their gloves as much as they would wash their hands if they were soiled. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena

Benjamin is scared for life after this episode so he gives you a big 👎🐇🐇. Me on the other hand loved every dish!! Id give them all a Holy Moly curries, chilli, hand pulled noodles are a win win. I cant believe all these restaurants are only 13km from Auckland CBD, you sure are spoilt for choice. 👍

So lucky aren't we! This was one heck of a good day of eating and we're so spoilt to have all of this right here on once street in Auckland. It's such a neat area for food. It's really exciting seeing so many different options along one small strip. Thanks heaps for watching this one! Cheers, Thomas 😀
