Bunny the "talking" Sheepadoodle" does more than talk. Making sure dogs get plenty of mental stimulation is important to their overall well-being.

It's very rewarding to see someone not just 'owning' a dog, but integrating development and mutual experience as an important part of the day. So many dogs mentally waste away in relationships marked by perpetual misunderstanding and deep rifts generated by their uninvolved humans, so it's always refreshing to watch involvement. There must be a reason for someone wanting to live with another species, other than just wanting a fluffy pet. It's all about the encounter.

I was already in discussions with people who claimed that training your dog with positive reinforcement is animal abuse and making them to slaves. "My dog was never trained and he behaves well". Awesome. Regularly, dogs are put down because they developed bad behaviour due to a lack of training, so basically they had to die because of their owner's negligence. If dogs behave well without any training, fine, but many need training. Not just for security (so reinforcing good behaviour), but also for fun and mental stimulation.

Long story short: It’s the same with some other animals, too! While it might not be that they’re necessarily put down for bad behavior, a lot of smaller animals are relocated over and over for bad behavior due to a lack of training. I teach my guinea pigs simple tricks with fruit pieces as a reward once a week. They know stand (on back legs), paws up (on any object), and turn (in a circle). It’s a little more difficult training both at the same time as they fight over attention, but I feel bad separating them because then you see the other one scratching at the fence trying to reach the treats. It stimulates them. I also like to hide their food or build obstacle courses or mazes to see how they react. I haven’t done so since my eldest passed away, however; he was the one who really enjoyed puzzles. I also train our cat, and she actually responds really quickly to praise or scolding. A simple “ah-ah” is enough to turn her away from something, which I thought was interesting considering how often she gets in trouble. Sometimes when it takes a while to call her, the dog will help me look, as well, which usually wakes her up if she’s inside. She knows sit, stand (on back legs), and turn (in a circle) though she’s found a loophole by turning around and sitting in a different spot so she can try to get a treat for both. She’s a big beggar and teases the dog several times a day, which I hope to improve in the future. As for the dog, he knows paw, jump, sit, shake, wait/stay, lay, roll, come, and go home. I train him at least every other day, as well as the cat, to keep them stimulated and reinforce positive behaviors.

This has to be a top 5 fav from your videos. You are teaching us how to get into our dog's thought process. Once we understand how they approach and solve problems..... the rest is up to us being good creative teachers. I esp liked how you have learned that physical movement is a link to learning language. I'm definitely going to remember that as I teach. THANK YOU! Please tell Bunny her little brown beard is very cute.

My big dog struggles doing his back claws but then nothing exists any further back than his ears. I started with a flat bit of wood and sandpaper which worked well with both the big dogs and the little dogs. Next I got a length of guttering which is half a tube. I put the sandpaper into that and I find it works really well and gets the dew claw too. They think its a great game xxxx

My dog could give a shit less about training and rewards. NOTHING motivates her (not toys, not treats, not attention/love). Nothing but struggle every day for like a year while I trained her. I WISH I had a dog like Bunny who found training fun and exciting.
@solar0wind
@solar0wind 3 жыл бұрын
@@livelongandprospermary8796 Hmm interesting. My dog doesn't like to play either, but she's pretty food motivated and she likes short training sessions with lots of treats. Also she always showed interest in agility (e.g. she loves climbing up things that dogs can climb and things like balancing on fallen trees), even though her formal training just started recently (she's 8). Maybe you could ask a dog trainer what could be the issue/how your dog would be more motivated. If she shows any physical symptoms, maybe your dog is not just unmotivated, but maybe has a health problem, although I suspect that that's not the issue, since you said that they are like that from the beginnig. I wish you luck to maybe find something your dog is more passionate about!

This is amazing and I love your videos but honestly just asking does this kind of training and devotion take all your time? Not saying pets aren't worth it but does this level of communication with your pet take all your spare time or do you still enjoy human interests outside of your pet like hobbies that are not pet related at all? I don't mean to be negative or say pets dont deserve our love and devotion it's just, this seems like A LOT,for the average pet owner. And while I love your videos and thank you for sharing this amazing part of your life, I know it's more than I could handle. Maybe I'm wrong and only think that way because I don't have pets and this isn't as monumental as it seems to me. I dunno. But im genuinely curious as to what this all takes even if I know I don't have it in me. And also thank you. I love varcariously through your videos as a "pet owner" because I genuinely love Bunny and your relationship and it makes me so happy to watch these videos even if I know, I couldn't do it myself

I know people who are involved in agility and training with very demanding jobs. One of my friends has two gorgeous dogs and she does this kind of training with them (her pups don't have buttons though so there's less of that) while also being a full time high school teacher which obviously takes up a lot of time and emotional effort, especially right now. Her dogs get walked daily and get training time and play time every day. You don't need to do tons of stuff each day but you do need to do stuff consistently with your pet. Especially things that they clearly enjoy and find challenging. And yes, my friend still has non-dog hobbies!

While I am no shining example, from what I understand, training sessions like this don't need to be long, in fact they recommend 15-20 minutes can be enough to spend your dogs energy and their concentration will drop off after too long. So, the theory is to do just this amount each day if you can. Watching this video, I'm reminding myself how much I enjoyed this time with my dog when I was doing it, and I'd like to start it again, as it's fun and a great bonding experience :)

I'm not a dog owner but your comment reminded me of a question I had while watching it. Its said that scientifically cats are smarter than dogs, but I've never had a cat that needed this level of stimulation to be satisfied. Then again, I've never had a 100% indoor cat either, and nature and all her beauty definitely provide plenty of exciting fun. I dont know if my girl currently would even allow me to train her anyways. (She only does 3/4 fetch. Brings it back half way. But boy is she smart, I swear and can provide many examples of her understanding complex English sentences). Anyways, it sounded like you havent ever really had a pet, but also that you would like one. I would actually suggest a kitten or an older cat. (Or two of you get kittens bc they will entertain each other indefinitely and arent any harder to clean up after). Easy to care for and easy to love. Just dont make the mistake that they are gonna be like the stereotypical cat from memes. I've never met or owned one like that I and place the blame on the owner if they are. Cats LOVE to love. Often in their own way, but its your responsibility to figure it out and train against inappropriate behavior. I have a lot of experience raising kittens so if you think that could be a possibility lmk and I can share a few tips. That said, if you are interesting in a pet, cats are awesome because you dont have to be homeevery day, let alone every 8 hours. They dont eat unless they are hungry and dont have to be let outside to do their business. Also, when/if they love you, it's because they have decided you are their person and that is special

I've seen less an less lately, but I know exactly what you mean. Some reasons I've thought of is that Bunny is more popular, which would also draw more negativity. But also, have you ever noticed how cats are "girls" and dogs are "boys"? ( which is why culturally cats are known to be sassy , and all the other things people say, like evil or purposefully demanding, etc. None of which I've ever experiences despite raising many cats). Anyways, although it's possible for this train of thought to work both ways, [ie. Men favor dogs so they hate kitty more than bunny], I actually think that men are less likely to click on a "cat can talk video". I kinda also think it's possible they are threatened by bunny? I dont really know, but it's a thought because I have noticed the majority of angry comments are left by males. It could also just be that trolls found fertile ground here by being shitty. Maybe none of the above. I dont hesitate to say I just enjoyed a respectful conversation about gender and that could easily have influenced my thoughts on the subject. Take care all!

You'd have to RUN your dog, HARD on concrete for about 2 miles every few days to have this be the exclusive nail care technique.. 20 years as a pet care expert, training(obedience, agility, service), grooming(pet, show, creative), dog sports( agility, lure coursing), showing.... The list goes on...

Forgot to mention some breeds don't benefit from short nails, especially active working breeds... Reuters are meant to have longer nails to help them dig, small game hunters need slightly longer nails to help them grip and turn swiftly
@TieDyeVikki
@TieDyeVikki 3 жыл бұрын
@@cleverfoxcrochet Well I didn't necessarily mean it would be the exclusive nail care technique, as it would of course depend on how active the dog is and how long and often you walk or run it. But in any case, it definitely helps. I didn't have to cut my Bernese Mountain Dog's nails too often (it varied with the seasons and time spent on walks, as I don't tolerate extreme heat and cold well). And since I didn't own a nail grinder (he probably would've been a big baby about the noise and vibration), I'd just use the clippers to take off length and then let the road grind them smooth. I once knew a large breed dog who mostly lived on concrete (he did spend some time in the house too but couldn't be left alone), and he got very few walks (he did get to run around and play in the back yard every day, but that wouldn't have ground his nails), and his nails never needed cut and they were always smooth. Not that I'd recommend having your dog live on concrete. I'm just saying, all he did on that concrete for a good part of the day was lie down, get up (somewhat of a strain for a big dog), and walk around some, and that was enough to keep his nails ground down.

This is totally from left field, especially because most of my experience is with cats. But if you havent yet, try and communicate with her on her own terms. Try and imagine yourself into her experience. Try and see things from her perspective and hear them that way too, which is like WAY louder. I recently learned that chickens react to planes the same way they react to birds of prey. Getting into her head a bit might help you figure out the way she likes to be communicated with. To tell you a secret, when I get a new kitten I pretend to groom them with my mouth just like a mother would. (And as a kid I actually did that until I learned how to fake it lol). Often holding back a bit learning how to communicate in their personal language helps a lot. Of course, you may have already tried all of this, but on case it could help improve your relationship I hope I end up helping. Take care!

This was excellent!!! I’ve not got my buttons yet but my pup and I are working on paw touch and he’s got it all ready in a day!!! So I will work on some of these other ‘tricks’ too which will help him learn when our buttons arrive! Thank you for sharing!!! Love from Canada 😄💗🦁

Bunny is a true marvel, and I'm delighted to see such an excellent example of cross-species learning and education that emphasizes mutual communication. The videos are both fun and thought provoking, so glad you've chosen to share and have reached such a large audience. We use modeling/mimicry a lot with wolves and primitive canids. They are instinctively excellent observational learners and hard wired for learning and language in a cooperative social context. Not that dogs aren't, but with wild or primitive canids, it's an inborn survival trait - one that was capitalized on and integral to the domestication process. Despite what some research with wild or primitive canids seems to demonstrate (the "point/follow" testing on wolves comes to mind), they are true masters of nuance and detail oriented observation. For example, when you house wolves or primitive canines, you quickly learn to shield how locks, doors, and other access operations work, as you can be sure they're watching closely and taking copious notes.

So, so, so in love with your dog. She's amazing! But you are, too. I'd guess that lack of training skills and patience are the biggest problems with dogs not learning. You make a great team!

If only I didn’t have four dogs. I feel like this is much easier with just one or two or someone to watch them during training. The buttons would be a trampled mess haha

@@lauren7376 This just leads me to more questions. Eventually, would the one start speaking on behalf of the others? It's really interesting to think about and would probably make a good horror sci-fi novel.

I cant thank you enough for sharing Bunny with us! Your vids make me realize how much pets value interactions with humans, and how much they enjoy physical interactions like scratches and pets. I take my interactions with my pets much more seriously now and make sure they all get lots of interaction.

Do you get funding for this so that you can full time train her and work with her? Or are you working 24/7 with bunny and your job

Ohhh i love it. Do you recommend good channels to follow to learn how to teach tricks? I thought my (parent's) dog basic stuff, gestures and so on, like go to the direction i point so she can run with me when i skate, but thats stuff she naturally learn. I tried to train here to shake hand and failed miserably. I think she is probably too old to learn buttons, but i hope to get a puppy when i can, and i want to start good.

It's not just about food rewards, most dogs have an innate desire to please the leader and will work for that once they learn the behavior so you don't have to give a food reward every time to reinforce. This is good for everyone as it reinforces the relationship, stimulates the dog and enriches human and fog. Wonderful to see you working with Bunny so well.
