She was looking at the cat when she was saying “Now!” and “Play”. I mean, you need not use courtesy to a CAT! 😂 Later when she was specifically looking at Mom, she did say, “Come play” a couple of times.

poor bunny just wants to play with spooky this is wild to me because I try to talk and interact with animals as though they can understand me and treat them with dignity, and even without buttons I know that there's a dialogue happening. it's one thing to have anecdotal experience however as opposed to seeing this sort of behavior recorded and vastly expanded and expounded upon.

My primary takeaway from the Clever Hans case was that our animal companions are almost preternaturally gifted at taking nonverbal cues from their human partners.

It's weird cause humans are not necessarily good at taking non-verbal cues from animals. But plenty of animals seem to be quite skilled at taking nonverbal cues from us.
@rosemali3022
@rosemali3022 3 жыл бұрын
@@noonenowhere877 In my opinion it's just a matter of the level of importance one gives to theother. Also, I think that humans have more shared expressions than most animals do, because we are raised in a group and they often arent, so many of their expressions are their own. If someone pays close enough attention they can get at least a decent amount of understanding with their pets. I know my cats playing (by herself) meows, and her "I'm outside let me in", "I'm on the roof" let me in' "let me out" etc meows. Plus the difference between "I love you ", "stop that", and "noooo different way" nibbles. Plus a dozen or more things. However, she had me totally beat. She understands so much of English language it's a bit crazy. To the point I can day full sentences she has never heard before and figure it out. The only thing is I don't think she would accept training.
@lizzalkula376
@lizzalkula376 3 жыл бұрын
They have to be, don't they? Most animals use non-verbal skills to communicate with each other and other animals. Think of course, the wagging of a dog's tail, the ears being folded back on a cat or horse, even the ruffled feathers on a bird. I know I've learned that cats became "talkative" (meowing) to give them a way to communicate with humans because they noticed we make sounds. They are known to be very quiet animals that don't (usually) meow in the 'wild' unless it's a mother cat to her kittens or vice versa (of course there's some exception to this rule). I feel like, but I'm not sure and I'm not looking it up although I'm curious if it's true, that it may be the same with dogs. Or at least some breeds. Dogs use non-verbal first, such as the tail wag mentioned earlier, or the bowing when they want to play, or turning on their backs to show submission or even love. I wonder if they learned barking, or at least barking *more*, from being with verbal humans?

Animals have their own language and way of communicating. They don’t need words, people do.
@solar0wind
@solar0wind 3 жыл бұрын
@@jaeshasway Actually, there are cases of apes using a communication system designed by researchers to communicate with each other. And they were of the same species. Animals communicate in very different ways. That's also why many dogs and cats don't get along if they're not used to each other. They misunderstand each others' body cues. There's more to animal communication than we know at the moment, and that's why I want to become a researcher in that field. (I'm in my 3rd semester at uni now.) However, human communication is most likely superior to all other animal communication systems because we can talk about many more things, even about abstract ones. This is believed to be one of the main reasons why our species has been so successful. There were many many species of apes in the past, but most of them died out. One of the reasons probably being that they couldn't communicate new ideas as effectively, so they couldn't invent new ways of living to adapt to changing environments. We can share ideas, pass them on through the generations, learn from our history, share knowledge, and much more. Getting to the point that I'm able to write this comment to you on my phone took hundreds of thousands of years of passing on knowledge. Humanity today stands on the shoulders of giants. And those giants are the collective knowledge and ideas of our species. No other species has amassed so much knowledge and innovation. And why were we able to do that? Because of language. This is not meant to belittle other animals. I love other animals. It's just to give you some more admiration for human languages. They are truly remarkable.

@@sprucetwigs4864 I don't really know why you say "mortal tongue". After all there are no immortal beings apart from certain jellyfish species and other primitive organisms as far as we know. And I doubt that they have sophisticated communication systems. If you mean "human languages"; well, we can't describe things like how colours look, so yes, there are a few things that could be better, but saying that it "sucks big time" is not really the best description, considering that this "bad" system allowed for the invention of smart phones and other things. If language sucked as much as you seem to think, then you couldn't write this comment because mobile phones and computers would never have been invented.

I've actually been trying to remember the name of the Clever Hans thing, but have been too lazy to look it up. Thank you for that! I took a bunch of classes on equine behavior and it's come up a few times, but I was wondering if anything like that could be happening now. I've been super interested in how this could be crossed over for a horse and it seems like it could easily be done with target training. I hope someone tries it soon. I would if I wasn't chronically ill and still had a horse. Really appreciate these videos, especially the ones that have bits focused on training.
@weakamna
@weakamna 3 жыл бұрын
The thing I feel is different here is that Clever Hans wasn't really learning to communicate, he just learned to do what amounts to basic tricks in the style of "if this then that". What bunny is doing feels a lot more like actual communication. For example, she initiates conversations herself and is actively asking for others to help her fulfill her needs.

Hi... I've been watching these for a while now. I noticed this video that examples chosen to represent the theme of Play, were taken from across quite a time period (the early examples even have a much smaller more primitive key pad setup). It got me to wondering; are there a lot of videos which never get chosen to post simply because they contain confusion or nonsense in Bunnys communication/what percentage of communications actually make rational sense (and has the communication generally become more effective/successful over time)? We don't get any sense of the struggle or labour with your videos since you are purposely cherry picking successful instances of communication... And we have no idea the degree to which/how selectively you have to cherry pick those moments... Or whether communication is actually senseful most of the time.

Yeh if the dog is responding to cues from you then why after mentioning the ball did she go for the ball? If responding to cues then the idea is yours not hers and she wouldn't have had the proper linkage in her brain. If she mentions ball but goes for the ball when turned down then the idea was clearly Bunny's. I think its clear your dog knows how to communicate. Watching the gears turn in her head is awesome.

Oh my gosh, I have this book, I can't find it! It's the true story of a slave that was kind of raised by since childhood by the guy that owned this estate. Anyway, long story short, the little boy had a way with animals, and after he grew up, he trained this horse that did the most wonderful things. Several scholars, even from Harvard, came to watch this horse and the black man that taught him, and couldn't find any sort of cueing, or trickery. The name Jim is in the title! The book is more about kindness and love, but it was with kindness and love that he taught this horse. This is also one of the most beautiful stories I have ever read.

I wonder if Bunny and Billi would be able to communicate with each other? I'd love to see the cat rejecting the dog's invitation to play... or perhaps by some miracle Bunny's request to "Play" make the cat more trusting as to the dog's intentions.

Please leave your written comments up a little longer. I've written this before. Sometimes (like several times in this compilation) they are pretty long, and they are in both a very small font & the color white, making them difficult to read. Because your house gets good light, sometimes (fairly often, actually), they blend in with the background making them hard to see. I love Bunny and love following her progression. Help us out, please!

Hi... I've been watching these for a while now. I noticed in this video, that the examples chosen to represent the theme of Play, were taken from across quite a time period (the early examples even have a much smaller more primitive key pad setup). It got me to wondering; are there a lot of videos which never get chosen to post simply because they contain confusion or nonsense in Bunnys' communication/what percentage of communications actually make rational sense (and has the communication generally become more effective/successful over time)? We don't get any sense of the struggle or labour with your videos since you are purposely cherry picking successful instances of communication (or at the very least; communications which look to align with some superimposed narrative)... And we have no idea the degree to which/how selectively you have to cherry pick those moments... Or whether communication actually holds sense for much of the time. It would provide a valuable form of context to our viewing of your videos. Thanks!

Would Bunny work? Like a dust mop pad to floor. Or pickup toys and put in a basket. I did not have talk buttons but my dog uses did all this and more.I used gestural and verbal. Says the words Mom out nnnnn in umruff for jump. Just ideals. Would have been cool to give more like this.

I noticed that the language buttons are different colors? Is there a difference in the black buttons from the white buttons? I just discovered Bunny. Am binge watching, this is so amazing and adorable.

I love these videos and I want so much to test these with my cats. I may be (okay, I definitely am) biased but I noticed at least two of my cats 'teaching' themselves words. My one cat will appear from nowhere when we say "squirrel" we were feeding the birds, and squirrels would show up and Random loves to watch them. I tested a theory and said the word as calmly as I possibly could have one day while one was on our outside table. Sure enough, Random comes from the back and looks around at the windows until she spotted the squirrel. The second cat learned what 'scoot' meant. We say it when we're near a door we don't want them to go through (garage and front door usually) one day (a few years ago so he might have been about a year old or so then) I was by the door and just as usual said 'scoot' to him and was surprised when he scattered off. I thought 'did he...? nah... just a coincidence' and later I was by the garage door and he was nearby and I thought "I wonder" and looked at Airman and said as normally as possible (trying to keep my tone normal as with Random) "Scoot" and sure enough. It's amazing to me to see them stop and look and wait. Literally 'searching for their words'.

I just can’t imagine this could be chalked down to the Hans effect. You can see her looking away to think things over before responding. If she was working from subtle cues then she wouldn’t need the time to reflect before response and also wouldn’t look away to think before her response. You can see she has an understanding of the words. I find it strange to think people can’t accept a dog could repeat words back to communicate even if given a voice, I mean they learn words ? They know what walk, dinner, sit, stay and so much more means (I know my dogs understand a lot. We don’t really pay attention to everything they understand throughout the day if you recorded every interaction and time you spoke and your dogs actions you would be amazed) so if they can learn the words and react then why couldn’t they use them in reverse context back to us if given a voice like bunny has been? Xx

how much time does Bunny spend using the buttons during the day? This seems like it has become a game in itself (attention being the reward). Does she talk to you all day long? Or is it bursts when she really wants something.

clever hans effect is probably even harder to detect with dogs since they are soo much more sensitive to things than humans. and tbh people who are engulfed into a field or a passion usually see what they want or are less liekly to notice a little bias or flaw, if not both
