I grew up at the Burger Chef in Bladensburg, MD. No other fast food chain has ever come close to the sweet memories I have of that place. I sure do miss it !!!!!

The Burger Chef that I used to go to (when I was a kid), even used to have a 10 cent burger promotion every so often. You could get a plain hamburger for 10 cents! My older brothers would go in there and get 10 burgers for a buck! Then, of course, you could go over to the "works" bar and fill those suckers up with all the toppings that you wanted to. It says over on the Wiki that Burger Chef was second (in terms of stores)only to McDonald's in their heyday.

I worked at one from Sept of 1979-May 1980. The food was a lot better then McDumpster's crap even way back then. They were a poor man's Marc's/Bob's/Mike's Big Boy. No crappy drive through and no annoying as hell loud screcching beepers on the deep fryers either. McDumpsters had those loud buzzers for their french fry deep fryers. Loved the Top & Big Chefs. I didn't get payed jack shit but we could take home as much food as we wanted within reason every night at closing time.

I remember Burger Chef in Louisiana in late 70s. Only ate once from them, though.

@harmonizethelord9... apparently there are NO MORE Burger Chef's around (you can check the Wiki for more info). I grew up in the suburbs of the Detroit area where there were MANY Burger Chef's around. The great thing about them was the "works" bar, where you could load up your burger with all the toppings. I think that's why the burger in this commercial has nothing on it, other than the bacon and cheese. They expected you to go to the works bar and put on what you wanted!

yeah that is pretty creepy considering what happened in Indy that same year.

@harmonizethelord9... it wasn't like Subway, it was a "help-yourself" station out in the lobby near the tables (Kind of like when Wendy's and Burger King used to have their Salad Bars). They had all the normal toppings for burgers (lettuce, onions, pickles, tomato, etc...), but nothing out of the ordinary. The thing that was "unique" about it, was that you could put AS MUCH of anything they had out there onto your burger! Plus, none of the other fast-food chains had anything like it.

@tradergoatee... ya, that looks like him. He would be much more "Well Known" today if he had taken the part of "AL" on "Home Improvement". Apparently he had the part, but was busy with some other project when they were filming the pilot and first few episodes... then, the producers just decided to stay with Richard Karn.
