What you would've been in ancient times, according to your mental disability: • Schizo: A highly respected religious chief who was touched by the Unknown in ways the human brain cannot comprehend. • Autism: A secluded inventor, or the King's most dearest court jester who acts as council. • ADHD: An excellent hunter-gatherer, assassin and soldier. • OCD: A well-off tax collector, or an internally tortured, yet revered prophet who counts the signs of future events. • Bipolar: A troubled, but outstanding actor or artist, not without their controversies. • Borderline: The loyal & faithful servant/right-hand of someone powerful, for whom you'd do anything. I hope you get more subscribers, this stuff is awesome.

Fun fact: it's believed that in the Shang Dynasty (the first provable Chinese dynasty, reigning from ~1600-1046 BC), those born with disabilities that made it difficult to farm, work metal, or perform other physical tasks were usually inducted into the priesthood as children - the logic being, perhaps, that if most people were "shaped" for the more mundane professions, then the deformed had been "shaped" for other purposes.
@gezz5554 ай бұрын
This is actually a cool theory.
@dand12534 ай бұрын
@@gezz555 The Shang Dynasty's mythology and cosmology (well, what little I've learned about it) is a cornucopia of interesting ideas. For example, they had gods, but it was considered dangerous to seek their direct attention; Shang ancestor worship was predicated on the dead acting as intermediaries, using their liminal state as former mortals to 'translate' the prayers entrusted to them by their descendants so that the gods could be safely entreated for aid. The Shang Emperors held their status in part by having an encyclopedic knowledge of the various divinations, prayer ceremonies, and other rituals which everyone relied on for protection from the chaos of the natural world, but also because their bloodline was that of the "Three-Bodied Tribe", half-siblings to the Ten Suns which brought light to the world. * They were not fully mortal, and so they could risk performing rituals that would be suicide for any human occultist - and if need be, they could ransom their own lives as a last-ditch effort to invoke divine aid against famine and other disaster. The founding myth of the Dynasty includes the first Shang Emperor doing just this. ** +++ _Tang said, "Those for whom I am asking for rain are the people. If it is necessary to make a prayer using human offering, I ask that I be it myself."_ _Thereupon, he fasted and abstained, cut his hair and pared his nails, and regarding himself as a sacrificial victim, prayed at the altar of the Mulberry Grove._ _He said, "I, your little son Lu, dare to use a dark ([symbol I can't reproduce]) sacrificial victim and announce to the Lord of Heaven above: If there be wrongdoing in the ten thousand regions, the wrong is upon my person. If I myself have wronged, do not extend it to the ten thousand regions. Do not let one man's dullness cause the High Lord, specters and spirits to harm the people's life."_ _Before he had finished speaking, a great rain came, covering an area of many thousand li._ Interestingly, the phrase "dark sacrificial victim" in the passage isn't intimating that the act of human sacrifice is "dark". The specific phrasing is instead saying "a sacrificial victim who is dark", in a fashion which my main source, the book _The Shape of the Turtle,_ interprets as referencing the Shang creation myth, where the royal line are of the Three-Bodied Tribe, half-siblings of the black-feathered sun crows. * (The Shang measured time via a thirty-day calendar month, because they believed that the Ten Suns took turns making the journey across the sky each day. When the Tenth Sun completed his journey and the First Sun took flight again, a week had passed. To quote a passage from one of the written record sources we have, _'Behold their ascent to the sky! A time of brightness, then a time of darkness, as the sons of Xihe go out from Sun Valley.')_ ** (Unfortunately, the passage I then go on to quote was from records written long after the Shang Dynasty, by scholars whose philosophy drove them to interpret anything within the ancient scrolls they were transcribing that deviated from their understanding of China's inherent, eternal cultural norms as some sort of bizarre error, which they then 'corrected' to align with 'proper' Confucian principles.)

That's only one trick. People still could get in trouble if it was believed their voices or behavior was due to demons. Yes sciences, because their results are supposed to be replicable by anyone that follows their methodology. Spirits aren't matter so they aren't measurable by natural science and don't leave physical evidence. Yet they still exist, the same way our own thoughts exist in spite of their non-physicality. You have to use the tools of your ancestors, mainly your own soul and spirit, to contact them. Shrooms and herbs only serve to suspend the body's natural defenses, they are useless without the right technique and have lead many hippies to delusion. How do you know it's not "all in your head" though? The shamans knew when the predictions they gave came true, when they helped them find lost objects, ideal places to farm the land, or even hidden mineral deposits. Some could alter the weather for them, while others could curse or bless people's health and fortune. Among many other things. @Samura1313 Pre-History is a term that basically means a time when history wasn't written yet due variety of reasons such as oral traditions. That being said, there's physical evidence found of pre-historic cultures and some of the most common ones are skeletons and therr's a few that have been found of people who have debilitating injuries and conditions such as broken bones that didn't heal properly or indications of birth defects that still lived a long life afterwards. This in addition to other physical evidence of how the people of pre-historic cultures lived as well as studies on human nature showing we're extremely social creatures that need stimulation to survive implies that the main priority of a lot these cultures was peaceful co-existence for the sake of survival as a group and whatever you contributions to your community came afterwards. So, the mentally ill and neurodivergent would of lived and thrived in these cultures as long as they didn't endanger the overall survival of their communities. Keep in mind that these cultures predate civilizations that have caste systems such as the classic "Nobility, Peasantry, and Slaves" which implies priorities shifted away from this when survival no longer was an issue which clearly was a mistake because then the main priority became "how do we please the people who owns all the food" and then "how do we please the people who have all the money which we need to buy food".

There's a gorgeous sculpture of the Ecstasy of St Teresa. The descriptions of her visions make people think she had a very unique form of seizures that gave her visions, or that she interpreted as visions from God. It's pretty interesting to look into.

In the cultures when people are more likely interpret schizophrenia as "voices of gods / ancestors" the symptoms are easier to deal. The voices tend to be nice

I really liked the top comment, so I’m going to add to it by continuing their list with my own ideas: Multiple Personalties: An absolute master at espionage, your charming nature and learned cooperation with your other selves allows you to always be as others want you to and operate behind enemy lines for extended periods without ever losing sight of who you truly serve, your enemies _never_ see your betrayal coming. . . PSTD: You are an exceptional writer and storyteller, a master at turning your own horrific past into beautiful yet heart wrenching stories. People might not notice you much during the sun’s course throughout the day, but at night? Around the campfire? You’re the top of the town then. Everybody wants to listen to your stories. . . Psychopath: You have no offical role in society, but behind closed doors, everyone knows you as the person who does the jobs that other people don’t want to do. You don’t take pleasure in your work, but nor do you cast judgement on your clients, you just do whatever you’re being paid to do, and do it well, whatever that might entail. . . Depression: You’re an exceptional warrior, if you can believe it! Not because you’re the strongest, or the smartest or even the most skilled, but because you don’t care if you die, and that means you take risks on the battlefield that other people just wouldn’t, especially in regards to people who you wouldn’t mind taking to the grave with you. . . Sociopath: You’re either a renowned actor or a beloved court jester, either way, you’re very good at what you do.

The part on the right is still true today, many cultures don't consider what we call "mental illness" as a problem to be solved but rather as a special skill or destiny or even a special soul. Those that are able to go through the proper training/ritual/cultural and community support are able to master themselves and are treated as shamans because their resilience in overcoming ordeals of the spirit is respected. It has been shown that treating people with mental illness like this can actually be significantly better for them as opposed to having them chug pills everyday. This is a generalisation of course, but genuinely some mental illnesses are more of a byproduct of an individuals disconnect with the modern world.

If it's one thing that the greater whole of society is going to try its damndest to do, it's going to be making mentally ill people simultaneously feel like they shouldn't feel bad for themselves in any way and shouldn't accept the fact that they actively have an impedement towards what other people can do, but also every single problem is caused by them being the way they are and it's inherently their fault to use as a reason to yell at them 💀
@marsship9215 ай бұрын

We do have the former kind of people; they're called conspiracy theorists and homeless crack addicts. Now that I think about it's it's sad that those kinds of people are now just lolcows when, if born in another time, they'd be the shaman of the tribe no one saw for weeks on end but everyone would have cool if overly embellished stories about how they fought ancient spirits beyond our comprehension and would recieve food and shelter because they acted as important spiritual leaders.

This is actually a REALLY big thing in psychiatry. Foucault wrote tons of books about it. Prior to the modern era the mentally ill were seen as possessing some varying level of 'madness' which was seen as its own unique type of knowledge. Doesn't men they were treated well, but it wasn't exactly they were fundamentally bad. When the modern era came around this idea of 'madness' warped into being 'innocent animality', those who were mentally ill became regarded as lesser, as requiring the assistance of a 'rational' person. The foundations of our system are within the idea modern psychiatry and we still see its impact today.

Foucault was a nonce though. Other people considered these arguments too, he wasn't the only one.
