I only went to see Strange World in cinemas because someone gifted the tickets to me for free and even then I wanted a refund. I still think this is the worst Disney animated film to date.

Rural American who likes Electroswing here, looking at the technology they are using in the clips you showed, and considering the plant life that seems to be present, those fields that they are supposedly growing a plant that was capable of growing in a snowy, high-altitude environment, and apparently nowhere else, are far too clean and square. I don't think that, even with modern technology, it would be possible to create such perfect looking fields especially the lack of weeds. There is also the small issue of trying to grow plants native to a specific environment in uncontrolled environments, the act of creating new technology to harness the new energy source, and becoming totally dependent on something in less than a generation.
@FromOrbit
@FromOrbit Жыл бұрын
But its not a plant, though. If you haven't seen the movie, then this is going to be spoilers, but the thing they're growing is a parasite or some kind of disease that leeches off of the giant animal that they live on. The part that looks like a plant is just the bit of the parasite that sticks out of the ground. All the little offshoots are connected to each other underground sort of like a giant fungus which is how they follow it down into the strange world in the first place. I do think the technological progress is a bit extreme, but hey it only took sixty-five years to get from the Wright brothers to the moon landing.
@galfor127

@@FromOrbit Fair point. However, if it is indeed a parasite of a fungal variety, the environment in which it grows is still important. Fungi that produce fruiting bodies only produce them under the right conditions. Here in AL, it is not uncommon to see deathcaps appear in fall in random places. The cooling temperature coupled with more wet days and higher chances of dew in the mornings create an environment where they can effectively spread their spores. This is different from fly agaric mushrooms that seem to only sprout in pine thickets during the late fall shortly before the first freeze comes in. If it is not fungal and is instead more closely related to parasitic plants, you still run into similar issues. Mistletoe seems like it should grow anywhere there are trees and birds to move the seeds, but it becomes exceedingly rare in cold and arid environments. If it is more closely related to parasitic forms of Animalia, I am curious as to why it has a fruiting body like that... most parasitic animals that live in or on a host (think parasitic worms) produce hardy eggs that are able to survive outside a host long enough to be consumed by a suitable new host either by eating or drinking contaminated substances so these strange alien parasites don't match in their reproductive style. Most animal parasites are surprisingly mobile and do not rely on a single type of host. Bacteria, Achaea, or Protista, maybe? If it is Bacterial that might give it its high levels of environmental resistance but... with a lack of multicellular examples of those three, it is hard to say with certainty. In regards to the technology, my biggest concern would be in the creating new technology category. The Wright bros were working with technology that existed, they made it mesh together. Going to the moon in 60 years, different technologies. Rockets work kinda like reverse guns or mortars,they harness the power of recoil but hit the planet instead of a person. What's truly impressive about the moon landing is the math involved,since it was built using newtonian physics as a base with a touch of the newer special relativity thrown in but was entirely done with theoretical knowledge from data from observing planetary movements and the data gleaned from orbiting the earth.

It's a systemic fungal infection. The environment as geological environment is overall not important because the whole island is the same environment from abiological point. Like yes such infections will start at specific places first but can spread everywhere if the immunsystem goes down. And that's what's happening in the movie.

So, my dad is currently a software engineer, but he used to be a journalist. More specifically, he was a USC graduate whose primary work was reporting on the entertainment industry. And he has a lot of interesting stories from that time. One of them was when he was sent to do press coverage for Rescuers Down Under. The people working on it were really excited! They were really rooting for this movie, going all out to promote it, and chances are, a lot of you reading this comment were hyped too if you were a kid growing up in the 90s. And then it underperformed at the box office. As soon as it became clear that Rescuers Down Under wasn't going to make it's money back, they pulled all advertising. (Waking Sleeping Beauty covered this). Disney doesn't like to waste money on movies that aren't going to pull a profit. In fact, according to my dad, if a given film performs poorly at preview screenings, any marketing campaigns for said film get thrown in the trash. In fact, if you were paying attention like I was because hyperfixation, the live action Pinocchio also got the bare minimum of advertising and - surprise, surprise! - was panned by critics. No, Strange World didn't flop because Disney hates gays or variety or environmental messaging or whatever conspiracy theory Tumblr is going to cook up next. Do you think these people LIKE losing money? The thing is, when the first teaser came out, I was actually really looking forward to seeing it. Then the full trailer came out and revealed that this movie was about Jake Gyllenhaal's daddy issues, and that's really fucking boring. I imagine a lot of people, including the test audience, thought that too, and thus when Thanksgiving weekend rolled up, they took their eyeballs elsewhere. Anyway the moral of the story is if you have to have a Disney product be a martyr for your cause, pick Owl House and not Strange World. And support creators and not corporations.

1:26 Atlantis was also a much much better adventure movie because the it incorporated the characters’ roles into their design. Audrey for instance, is clearly the team’s mechanic because she wears overalls, boots, and other utilitarian clothing. Ethan is supposed to be the explorer but nothing about his design suggests this and his outfit is something a generic high schooler would wear to class.

The funny thing is when the trailer first came out I thought the movie was going to be completely different, I don't know why I thought of this idea but I thought the movie was going to be about a man who loss his wife and child and thinks it's his fault suddenly found a mythical world that can bring back loss ones and so he meets a group of explore s who help him and try reconnecting with his wife and child and as the movie goes on he finally sees his wife and child but and tries to bring them back to the real world but they were unable to telling him that it's best to move on because if he doesn't he would be trapped in his bubble thinking their death is his fault so once he realizes it's best to move one he wakes up from his dream and tries to move on but every now and then he visits their grave and puts flowers on their tombstone then before the end he says ; thank you for the best years I had I my life and I will never forget the amazing family I had and I will miss you so much; after that he walks off beginning his new life. If they really wanted to tackle the pulp adventure style, perhaps they should've gotten artists who have expertise in that art style. Nothing about this film says pulp adventure. It looks like every big budget animated movie pooped out over the past 10 years. When you look at Hercules and Mulan there's a distinct visual style that sets them apart from the rest. But this, Encanto, and Raya (nearly forgot to list it) all look identical to Frozen and Tangled. i don't get you people. the gay part is so small, they story is indeed about the family, grandpa dad and grandson, and not a gay character doing gay things or wathever (if anything, he is portrayed as disney would any teenager, seriously (awkard around his crush, trying to play it cool etc) but just gay, almost anecdotically so. If it was a heterosexual teen and his crush you wouldn't be paying any attention to it even if told the same way. It does not seem at all like they payed too much attention to the "gay side" of the movie (his love interest appears at the very begining and very end...). Yet there's people like you pushing this idea that it's one or the other? either spooky/suppposedly "tired" gay-disney-agenda, or good stories, enemies at odds with each other lol? i mean, i know which type of people i'm talking to, but it still baffles me. you could argue about the execution of the message or how prevalent it was, but said message is anything but "gay people included, now give us money"; it's so obviously focused on generational trauma, father son relationships, whether it succeds at what it sets out for or not it's another thing, and the biggest issue between the three main characters are their careers/jobs/long term goals etc being impossed down the to the next; their sexual orientation isn't given any relevance for better or worse, you decide. But for real, it speaks of how alienated some of you feel by the mere presence of a gay character, that inmediately you have to choke it up to their pressence if the story fails (and you could argue it fails, if you want to, i liked it fine, not great not bad, and it has nothing to do with the barely anedotal presence of a gay teen). If anything, the movie failed because it was a little too tame, slow, wathever you wanna call it. And what promotion lol? this has to be the less promoted disney film theatrical release of all time. If anything it's almost like disney were scared or unsure on how and if they should promote it.- Maybe they didn't want to give the twist away, maybe the blamed covid and the almost dead state of cinemas after it, maybe the were afraid of alienatig insecure straight people, maybe they didn't trust people would watch a movie branded as disney, and not pixar, while not being a musical, having anything even reminiscent of a princess, etc, or maybe they are just in a rot and facing internal struggle, which "Wish" absolutely proves it's the case if there was any doubt.

The circular eyes, basic shaped faces and exaggerated facial features remind me lot of Hotel Transylvania. I love the animation style for that movie but those aspects work for that series because of how bouncy and expressive the characters and animation could be. With Disney's style of focusing on detailed characters these cartoony aspects of the design really clash, like seeing a unity asset animated into Avatar or something, It just doesn't work for me.

First of all I can't tell you how happy I am to see your back! Second: everyone talks about the lack of advertising this moving had, but I feel like lived in a parallel world or something. It's kinda bizzare how the turntables have turned. Dreamworks just released Puss in Boots, which was amazing and full of passion + artistry. And, say what you will about Chris Pratt, the new Mario movie actually looks good. Strange World? It looked bland and basic from the start. The adventure movie aesthetic felt like tinted shrink wrap (not offering much in how the movie's structured, just making it LOOK like an adventure movie) and the art style looks like it came from a bargain bin Hotel Transylvania ripoff. And, saying this as an Asexual woman, it's so obvious that the "reprezentatshun" is a last-defence shield. It's like the majority of these studios nowadays (not just Disney) are saying, "You see, the movie's not bad. That's just what all those mean, nasty homophobes are saying! Soo-ie little piggies, we've put a gay in the food trough! Come consume your product!" It's so gross and manipulative. Why can't we have representation framed like a normal ass relationship, where the two parties better each other in a significant way and with actual chemistry, and not in this faux-progressive sloppy style? Ugh.

Their ideas of Gay representation are a day late and a dollar short. They are also insincere because they are covering up for the fact that they are paying for employees to emasculate their Gay sons. It’s like the Favors brothers from *Song of the South* got together with Dr. Terminus from *Pete’s Dragon.* Disney is trying to eliminate homosexuality through eugenics and has been for years. They are complicit in war crimes against my people as a Gay MAN while claiming to be my allies. Real allies don’t emasculate little boys for not acting like my bullies did when I was in school.

It’s also hilarious when you can hear the song splicing in the scene. There’s a split second when the vocals are about to come in but they just hard cut into another instrumental bit. Also, the truth is that this ISN’T a kids/family movie. It’s a movie targeting the left-leaning, Whole Foods going, millennial “Disney Adults” crowd. That’s why Lone Digger’s in there, that’s why both MCs have daddy issues, that’s why the MC’s gay, that’s why there’s a tripod dog, that’s why they have avocado egg toast, play ripoff Catan, and it’s why (aside from the grandpa) all the male characters have the same weak/emasculated look to them. It’s so blatant it’s infuriating.

Yeah, the dad dynamic was the worst bit of the two dad's I ended up hating Searcher more BECAUSE of how passive aggressive he was. Jager may be settled with being a, urgh, 'example of toxic masculinity' but Searcher is worse because he actively holds people back. Jager leaves but he also leaves due to the argument he has with Searcher over the fungi. He was willing to stick around UP until that point which comes of that while there was conflict with the two before, Jager knew he had to stay because it was his responsibility to do so. The scene at the mountain was the straw that broke the camel's back and it's also a point to remember that Jager may have thought he'd come back no problem until circumstances threw him a curve ball otherwise. Searcher....is just UNLIKABLE. He's passive to an enormous fault and I think it's because of how he treats his own son about adventuring. Sure, say that it's the two dad's being more similar than alike but Jager at least knew he had to take chances to protect his family, even to his own fault. Searcher just came off more weak willed then intellectual and cautious.

To be fair, I don't necessarily think Strange World is the WORST movie ever made by Disney. No, I think that "honor" goes to Raya and the Last Dragon. The "climax" of that movie was absolutely god-awful, and the title dragon being so insufferable, that I almost stopped watching at multiple points. I was able to sit through Strange World well enough, although I do think it's definitely disney's most BORING film yet. I found myself rolling my eyes over how many times they reiterated how much Searcher and Ethan didn't want to be like their dads, as it was almost every other line that Searcher had talking about how bad his dad was that we didn't really get to see his character shine. And I completely agree that Arthur Christmas does this generational storyline WAY better.

I know the beginning is played for a joke, but can we stop saying animated movies are for children. Sure, they are ACCESSIBLE to children in a way that doesn't shock them and it's understandable even to them and has morals that they can use in their developemental life, but bad movies don't get a pass at being bad just because they're animated. Animation is a technique, not a genre, it ain't strictly kids-based, and can be good for adults too, take Puss in Boots 2, a movie about a guy coming to terms with his own mortality, learning to leave his past prime into the past and accept the fact that he's got to settle and stop being careless in life.

Yeah, I think some studios rely too much on token representation for marketing purposes instead of actually building a good story. I love seeing representation (and I think it's especially important in children's and family media because not every kid has the chance to learn about people outside their own age/race/gender/sexuality demographic in a real-life setting), but it's not something you can just slap on at the last minute. Disney has plenty of "gay characters" who aren't in queer stories and plenty of queer-coded stories where the characters' orientations are left ambiguous. Luz Noceda is a great example of representation done right; she's a great character on her own, and you can't take away her brownness or queerness without significantly changing her characterization and even her appearance, from her craft-scissors-disaster pixie cut to her dress choice of a suit coat and fluffy pink tutu for a fancy event. Her mother, Camila, isn't queer (that we know of), but her brownness is still given its due in her characterization-even in little things like wearing a protective hair net to bed or living cheesy Latin pop music. Too many studio executives don't let their crew invest that much love and care into characters.

Well, this may be the harshest, yet still good-faithed take of this movie I’ve scene. Honestly, I like this movie. Maybe not as good as I hoped for when buying the tickets, but it’s at least deserves to break even. I guess I was hoping I would see someone’s passion project Disney was trying to neglect, but that passion wasn’t there, but the effort was, so I can’t call it a bad film. On the more Nit Picky points. The Glades may not seem like a Farmer family in real life, but the in universe culture of Avalonia is clearly different, so that’s probably just how rural folk are for them. (I can go into the material conditions shape cultures that way, but hat seems like a bit much.) And I actually like Ethan as gay representations. Sure hid romance wasn’t a big part of the plot, but I felt like that was part of the point. It was treated like a normal thing a guy his age would go through. Even he rugged grandpa didn’t bad a eyelash when Ethan mentioned him. But I am straight myself, so I’m hardly the final word for that. Also Avalonia is more Solar Punk then Steam Punk.

I like the movie. The visuals at the start are creativ. The strange world is a cool concept, probably more if you get the plot twist before the twist and look for the biology nerd things. The charachters are likeable. I'm with the let gay characters just have their normal life and storys and not make everythink the same "but it's not socially acceptable" story. Splat is the best. Finally a disney cute sidekick that is on the usefullness scale of Timon and Pumba and not just written to be there and with one change can be written out of the story like Olaf. The noone is actual a villain was the only really bad thing. I expeccted the president Lady to go full Atlantis and not just act on an misunderstanding. Something like "Under my leadership everything will be still perfect and I don't care what the leaders after me have to deal with. My Legacy will not be tainted!" and her beeing pure selfish would explain why she didn't bet an eye about that one of her crewmates got eaten.

One major personal reason for me to hate this movie is that it accidentally stole a major premise from a story I've been developing for.. _YEARS_ before this dingy movie came out or was even a _thought_ in some Disney executive's head. The turtle continent thing is what I'm talking about. But in my story, you can't just dumbly go inside the thing. You'll die if you do because it's literally an animal, not some sort of weird alien thing with a whole other livable micro ecosystem. Also MY turtles could put this thing to shame with the level of thought and development that has been put into them, and their sheer size.. They're about the size of the continent of Africa. Lol.

The song that came on during the dance bit was Lone Digger. I was first watching this film with my family, and I sat frozen in my seat as I recognized the tune. I was the only one of the family that listened to the more 'strange' songs. Of all the songs present with an electric swing- the movie when with *that*?!? Thank god they trimmed it down for the movie, but for that entire clip I was silent, struggling to keep the gazelle and the cat trio out of my head (iykyk). I could mark the moments where they took out the lyrics and just let the instrumentals play, because I knew that those lyrics were not safe for the squeaky clean image Disney wants to pretends it has. If people go looking for the full song based on the movie, then dang will they be in for a rude awakening.

The plot wasn't really catching and the message felt weaker due to the previous movies which handled generational trauma better. Turning red literally came out the same year and we had Encanto also not THAT long ago. It seems really to be a case of Disney seeing that the movie is too generic to perform the way they need it to and deciding to save some money by keeping the marketing budget low

My thought process on this is that a movie is best for a short story. One where only two characters have names, the world doesn't matter, the people don't matter, and there's probably a moral at the end. Because any world building or character development not relivent to the main story is just eating up screen time meaning something actually important has to be cut out. Longer and more ambitious stories especially ones revolving around their worldbuilding should be given the Avatar Last Airbender treatment instead and made as a long series of 20-50 episodes. And when the sugestion of a filler episode comes up the worldbuilding and character development should be the first things looked at making the episode revolve around whatever has been the most neglected. There now everything is in harmony. Corporates can make easy movies and blow all their budget of the special effects while we watch actually interesting series that take longer than a few minutes to binge and make full use of that screentime.
