How the fuck does a guy who thinks adults don't like animated movies become the CEO of a company that essentially holds a monopoly on the very concept of "animated movies that adults enjoy too"? Like, legitimately, how in the world is that even possible?
@oftenseen22
@oftenseen22 Жыл бұрын
Not only that, but the Disney company is notorious for trying to be kid-friendly. Which is why people hate it when they buy mature media studios out and alter their properties. So not promoting something because you don't think adults will like it, but only kids will is alone a very non-Disney thing for the CEO to do.

I'm glad you talked about Bob getting kicked out of disney. My family works for Disney and my dad had let me know that the day that he was forced to retire there was a celebration in the offices. Bob fuckeddd disney hard like it really isn't as know as you'd expect it to be of how badly he affected allll parts of the company, from the movies, tv, the parks, the crusie line, etc. He was a terrible ceo and made a lot of really stupid financial choices for disney. Bob iger returning to disney was to many peoples dream come true cause he does truly care about what made Disney originally amazing, which is creativity, style, and entertainment. I'm hoping with his return disney will finally not be as money hungry as they have the last couple years.

I think Bob Chapek is terrible, but he carried out a lot of things that started before Bob Iger left, like Magical Express being eliminated, Disney Genie+, Minivans being eliminated, parking fees at resorts, Park Reservations, and variable park pricing per day. This movie was adorable and one of the most creative things Disney has put out. The "underage" argument is total BS. In The Little Mermaid, Arial is 16 and Eric is 18, so even though they're only 2 years apart, Eric is technically an adult, and Arial is actually underage. Snow White is 14, and Florian is ~20 Aurora is canonically ~15 and Philip is ~20 Belle was 17 and Adam (Beast) was 21. Shall we continue?

As a kid I always assumed everyone was bi. We were told growing up that "what matters is on the onside, not the outside," so of course that applied for crushes too. As a kid I wasn't aware of sexual intercourse, so the idea of sexual chemistry being an important part in a relationship wasn't in my head. Hell, it's still not since I'm asexual, but whatever. I understood boys and girls were "different," by extent of gender roles. Boys were supposed to be tougher and girls were supposed to be nicer. I thought some people wanted to be with people more tough and other wanted to be with people more nice. I don't understand why same sex or same gender attraction is a big deal or is more inappropriate. Hetero relationships are important, beyond the nature of a relationship, because of procreation. But not all male/female couples can do so, nor do they need to. The evolutionary need for same sex couples is to adopt and balance overpopulation. There's nothing wrong with it. Nothing more mature or inappropriate. People are weird.

Not sure if this is relevant or anything but when I was first introduced to LGBT+, I can say that it wasn't great. No, it's not the fact that two people of the same sex were in a relationship, it was the fact that it was s3xualized, and I was VERY uncomfortable when I saw it. After that experience, I was pretty hesitant with the community. But after some time to see that it's not all bad, I began to accept it and be part of the LGBT community. I 100% agree with that. I might be hetero biromantic so my opinion might not have much weight, but I agree. Personally, I would love to see a sitcom about a lesbian couple raising a family together and dealing with the every day struggles that comes with most people and couples. Perhaps one mother is the head of a small business who is constantly at odds with the mega corporation just down the road from where she works. The other mother could be an aspiring writer, who write beautiful stories, but has difficulty finishing them. Give them a son and a daughter who deal with the same every day struggles at school: fitting in, having crushes, bullying, etc. However, the family would deal with additional struggles simply because the parents are a same sex couple. This shouldn't be a thing in every episode, but it's something to add every now and then. Although this is taken from a meme I came across a long time ago, I would laugh if the son lost in a video game and immediately cries "Mom!" One would respond, "What?" The son, a little annoyed, "Not you, the other one!" Would this sitcom come off rather generic? Probably, but it would be a great way of normalizing same sex relationships without all the drama.

I genuinely feel like the concept for this movie was extremely cool, and the movie overall was really cute, I’m sure for younger audiences, which is what the movie is marketed towards, they would probably think this movie is amazing. I truly truly believe that there was less marketing on this movie because of the fact that this one is ACTUALLY the first gay character in the Disney movie, that they explicitly talk about him liking boys (unlike other Disney movies where they say they have the first gay character but their sexuality is never actually talked about) and the diversity as well… we forget a lot of ppl who watch Disney, and the corporation to pay Disney, are racist as well as being homophobic

Yeah, but more kids might be allowed to see it if their parents are homophobic if there is no kiss, plus Encanto did the same thing with moving away from teenage sex and kissing. The girl that ends up in a relationship is 21. They're emphasizing love and care over making physical intimacy a goal or trope (like, 'did you guys go to home base, yet?' pressure). It's circumventing any exploitation accusations very cleverly. Now ppl have to face... love vs their own hate and homophobia.

I watched this movie on Disney+ with my son. (52 and 22). We cared less about the homosexuality. Once it was out there, it wasn't mashed into our faces, nor did it make us feel any form of pressure. Which is just how we like it! Everyone should feel comfortable watching a family movie. We were both surprised that the Grandfather was so very accepting, not just accepting, of the grandson's sexuality. Reason: the movie was not clear on the fact that a person's sexuality was like "breathing air' Something Unquestioned. Being used to our times, we were surprised, but then let it pass. Deciding that; "This reality and these people have accepted people as they are. Cool cool" ... What we hated and had issue with was the absolute smothering of just how much COUNSELING this family needed. I have watched movies based specifically on that subject and it was less smothering than this movie. (Little Miss Sunshine for example.) It got old fast, and they never listened to one another. I know that is why I had a shock moment when the grandfather could just automatically accept the grandson being homosexual, but not the Rest of (everything else that they have issues with) things. And there it is: I don't like it cause they were (IMO) dumb. 🤷

What is "mashing it into your faces"? The mom and dad openly flirt and kiss in the movie, isn't that pushing their sexuality onto people, too?
@Garouwerks
@Garouwerks Жыл бұрын
@@choux8372 My personal "Mashing it into 'your' face" is where it is more than a general showing of affection (I.E: Kiss, (just the lips), hand holding, hugs [usually the family kind/Significant Other kind]) To shove into my face and force things upon me (with any type of sexuality) or pile it up on me like a mound of too much anything; that's Mashing, Too Much, Inundated etc. While going to see movies we All (yep, every single one of us) have specific expectations to see/experience different things with individual movies. A Horror Movie: I expect to have horror, not a Romance. I go to specific types to see specific things. Shove/Mash/Crushed/Choked; name it what you want, and feel how you want. IF the parents kissing is, to you, the movie and company, "mashing" Heterosexuality, into your face, then that is Mashing, to you. To me, it is pretty Usual for Society on a general level. (Keeping P.D.A discomfort out of this as THAT is a whole separate discussion, this discussion is NOT that.) When I go onto Computer Media/Mass Media, and look through it, I Personally feel that the sexuality of the World is Mashed into my face. I now, literally, have to avoid a huge portion of the Media due to that. Again: PERSONAL OPINION. To some person or people out in the world, yes, the parents flirting and kissing is Mashing. To me, no. Having said that, by your question you also knew that is not what I was getting at. People are individuals, and some won't mind the parents affections, others will. As the old adage goes: Opinions are like A**holes, everyone has one. And my opinion is just as good or bad as the next persons. The Point I was making: The story was stinky BECAUSE: they were all selfish, and didn't listen to one another, or take into consideration other people's feelings, or even Ask one another what they each wanted. The son being homosexual ... that didn't make the movie bad. I was actually good with that. NOT the rest.

Everyone thinks of romance when they see toddlers, right? Right?" Also want to point out some hypocrisy here. Everyone says that two gay characters flirting for 3 seconds is "too sexual" Meanwhile other movies lets take the 90's Addams family films for example (which I adore btw) Mortica and Gomez openly flirt with eachother in every scene they're in but no one says oh thats too sexual because its a hetero couple. Bella a 17 year old falls in love with a centuries old vampire? "Oh how romantic" Seriously wtf is people's problem? There are many different kinds of relationships and they deserve to be represented equally not just hetero couples.

It's not even a plotpoint, the total of Ethan talking about that boy probably makes up 0.5% of that movie duration (that's like a minute!) There are about 4-5 kisses between his parents Searcher and Meridian, and not a single one between Ethan and his crush ugh. Strange World was so good. It one of my favorites of the year. The family felt so real with their interactions. The comic animation in the beginning was so cool. And I liked all of the design of the creatures and the inside world.

I wanna brag for a second. I had a proud parent moment with my seven year old kid. Firstly, I'm gay AF. So I took my son to see this because I think it's important to celebrate this animation and I can't be begging for more gay characters if I don't go support the ones that are thrown at me. So we go and see it and he LOVED it! Here's my proud moment. The scene when the too kids are talking and the main character gets flustered my son looks at me and says "mom, I think he likes him" and I'm like "yeah, me too!" And he goes "that's cute, he's nervous!" I wanted to cry because that means I've successfully made sure my son sees love and only sees love! I am so tired of hearing the narrative of this movie being inappropriate when I know for a fact there's kindergarteners out there pretending to have boyfriends and girlfriends. I personally loved the movie and how it included the whole "turtle island" native folklore in a way. I wish Disney would have promoted the damn thing. 😭😭😭😭

Every time I think our world is improving and moving more toward acceptance, I see comments like that top comment and I am brought back to reality. So what if the main character is gay? So what if someone is gay? I really don't understand what is so horrible about people being gay. They aren't hurting anyone by being gay. Maybe the people who have a problem with it are secretly butthurt cause the gay people don't find them attractive. Thats my head cannon now cause i cant stand the unwarrented hate

The age controversy is the most idiotic of the bunch! There are many coming of age films and tv shows out there that star 16-19 year olds characters, Call me by your name, heartstopper and young royals (just to name a few) Fricken, Will from Stranger Things is gay. All ranging from PG13-R rated. I just find it weird how no one really bats an eye at these films and tv shows. But, when it’s in an animated form and produced by Disney, then it’s a whole big thing! It’s just to stupid.

Disney did this movie wrong. They pretended it didn’t exist and then feigned shock when it didn’t make much money. My friend is half black, half white and gay (literally the main character) and didn’t know about this movie until the week of release. When he asked his mom if she’d heard of it, she thought he was talking about Stranger Things. Personally, I loved the film. I thought the animation was gorgeous, the family dynamic was done really well, and I enjoyed the story. But I get why conservatives hated it. Same reason they ban books: they don’t agree with it so it’s bad bad bad!!

Honestly, I think the fact that this movie was marketed so poorly really emphasized the fact that the blatantly not-so-subtle homophobics had no "pushback", since people who are allies or don't care about sexualities didn't have any incentive to see the movie, but the homophobic group had the incentive to "find something to hate on". There was no push-back wave or many reviews from non-homophobic people, so many of the public reviews are just that - homophobic.

one suggestion for people considering which film/tv show to watch is to never judge something by an imdb rating. on imdb this film's rating is 4.8 with the majority of the reviewers putting one star for the movie. if that isn't petty behavior, idk what is

Thanks a lot for this review! It's honestly so jarring to see everyone talking shit about this movie only because one of the main characters is LGBT+, and the part that puzzled me the most about all the excesive hate is that Ethan being gay isn't even a main plot point. They didn't make the whole movie about it nor did they base his entire personality around his sexual orientation. Heck, I believe Ethan's crush isn't even on the trailer. One of the characters has an innocent crush on a person (of around the SAME AGE as them so that whole "underage" argument is nonsensical) and everyone is already bitching their lives out because of it. That's just so childish, immature and hateful. I feel bad for all the people that worked in the production of this film. It's obvious that those people poured their hearts into the project and did their best so this movie could entertain and even inspire other people, and unfortunately thanks to Disney's poor (and cowardly) marketing decisions and the general public hating even the mention of the word "gay" now the product of their efforts has been continuously trashed and a lot of people will be discouraged from watching it. I don't have Disney+ rn but I'm sure I'll get around to watch it someday; Strange World seems like a nice, cozy movie. Once again, thank you for talking about this and giving your honest opinion on the topic! This is the first video I watch of you but I'm sure I'll be staying around for more--I enjoy your style!

Ariel was 15, Snow White was like 12 or 13, Jasmine was 16. All hooked up with much older men during musical numbers, of whom didn't make the SLIGHTEST attempt at hiding their intention for these women. Does anyone remember "Kiss De Gurl?" How many films by disney have been about boys slobbering over girls on screen? Yet that was 'appropriate for a kids film?' Do you even REMEMBER what kind of clothes Jafar slapped Jasmine into at the end? How old was he, like, 47? But this one is where people lose their shit?Yet that was 'appropriate for a kids film?" The entire goal of equal rights within a culture is where we get to the point that we don't care about a person's race or their romantic life choices. It's just everyday news, who gives an F? It SOUNDS like that's what this film attempted to do, which got _those people_ with their hackles up. I bloody hate this era.

I am a 28 year old man and my movies consists solely of anime, animated movies and so on. How does someone who doesn't think animated movies is for everyone end up as the head of Disney????? I am gay and I Loved this movie so much. It felt so genuine cause Ethan was me as a teen. Difference being I suffered for it and was disowned for it. If I had movies like this as a kid, I would have been able to accept myself sooner. I loved seeing Ethan just be treated as a person and it is SICKENING that these people are sexualizing CHILDREN when there is nothing like that in this movie. This sexualizing of gay people for just existing needs to stop. Beautiful movie teaching kids to be more kind and tolerant.

People getting mad at shows and movies making a character’s only personality trait them being gay but then getting mad when a character is gay but it’s just casually mentioned instead and isn’t made into a big deal and ya know the gay character is actually a character. I thought they portrayed Ethan pretty well i overall thought it was a cute movie with a good plot and obviously it’s okay if the movie isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but if it’s only because Ethan being gay is brought up 3 times then y’all got some issues💀

To be honest I liked Strange World, the fact they traveled thru an animal's body and didn't realize it was pretty cool twist story. I think the movie was creative and even though the main character was gay didn't make me or my two kids walk out of the theater when we saw it like some others did. The only movie I think tested it's waters was Lightyear with the gay kiss but there's other things in the movie that turned me off besides that, it just didn't feel like a buzz lightyear Toy Story vibe.

To be fair from experience with my friends, and as someone part of the LGBTQP+ community, talking to your family about being gay for the first time is not always as simple as "they immediately accept you". Often times your parents will have some questions and will want to talk to you, so the movie portraying the father and grandfather as just outright accepting is a bit unrealistic. But it is CERTAINLY NOT offensive.

Personally, I thought the overall movie was okay and seemed to be aimed at a younger audience than I was used to from Disney movies, making it feel a bit too simplified for my taste. The pacing was awkward, especially in the middle and the animation wasn't anything new. On the other hand, I have no doubt that this will end up being some kids' favorite movie due to the world and fun technology with a very positive theme running though it that gives the movie value. Overall, not for me, but definitely not the worse either. Also, I think the gay representation in this is actually very good and well executed.

Im a big fan of sci fi and animated films. So I definitely loved the world that this film created and the story. I very much enjoyed the plot twist at the end of the movie. However, I also happen to care about not normalizing homosexuality to children. I dont teach children to hate gays, but I do want my kids to learn essential traditional values that I believe are important. That said, I agree that the movie isnt "shoving" gayness down the throat of the viewers, and I did enjoy most of it. I just wouldnt take a young kid to see the movie.

The whole “why is the grandfather so accepting” argument is hilarious. When i came out to my grandma she was the same way brooo. Instead of questioning WHY im bi and have a crush on a guy, she questions why i like the guy, is he the right guy for me. Stuff like that, didnt try and convince me that im going thru a phase, she didnt do anything like that. She was just curious about her grandsons lovelife
