All of these flutes are amazing! I've tried these flute but in different metals when I was looking for a new professional flute. I tried all of them in sterling silver instead of pure silver and 15/85. This video really reminded me of when I tried all of these back in October. I found, both in this video and when I tried a Burkart, that the Burkarts are really flexible if you know how to play one. Which of course, you know how too. Burkart flutes are honestly, in my opinion and words from my professor who is a Burkart artist, best for soloist. The sound of Burkart flutes tend to be very powerful and open, which is not the best for chamber/orchestral music. I loved playing the Altus a few years back, however when I tried it last fall, everyone only seemed to have the Platinum Atsui 1407, which I didn't favor. The sound went really dull with the platinum plating. However, I can see why most like Altus since it has a much darker sound than the other two. Which is weird, I find Altus and Nagahara are the only Japanese made flutes that play with a dark sound. The Brannen was amazing, but it really controlled my sound to much. So, it was extremely difficult to play on it. I could play with tone colors and everything, but it was way more work than it was in years past. In the end, I went with a Burkart Elite, I prefer the sound of it and it's definitely a flute that can be continually grown into. Also, if I ever had an orchestra gig or such, I could always invest in a wood head joint since that fixed the problem for my professor. Great video, and I enjoyed how consistent you were with how you played the excerpts. It makes the video more honest and fair. In this video, I definitely would say the Altus was my favorite.

As usual you sound just fine on these flutes. But I thought they pretty much sounded the same. What would be interesting to know is how much did you have to adjust to each flute, how much resistance and response did each have? Can you play easier in the high and low registers? How about dynamics, was that easy to achieve? How about the ease of articulation in terms of clarity? This is a very noticeable feature on flutes I have found esp. double/triple tonguing. These are extremely crucial aspects to experienced players as this helps your phrasing and musicality immensely! Thanks for posting.

I feel Altus is very well tempered in the flute scale. Even though the flute scale is on the eaqual temperament, it sounds very natural and easy to my ears as if I were listening to the pure temperament. I love Altus.

I wish you would say a few words about how each flute felt to play. How was the action? Are the keys noisy? do you feel there is good dynamics and tone colors available? as well as how smooth it performs in the 3rd octave. Which do you think is the best for the money. Thanks

The Altus 1707 has the best sound in my opinion, the Brannen has clear articulation, almost too clear but it is very focused sounding. I didn't really find much that I liked about the previous two flutes though haha....really loved how you made the Altus 1707 sound...what is your personal flute? I play on a Yamaha 774 with a Bradley Garner headjoint.

Hey Katie, this video comparison is great because I love each brand. Brannen is powerfull and reminds me of Galway. The Altus sounds so frenchy. The Burkart has a british or german sound. These flutes are all beautiful. Soundwise I would prefer the Burkart (2nd the Altus). The best mechaniksm of all three is on the brannen (2nd Burkart) if you don't count the c#-trill which I found rather irritating on Brannen flutes. For me the lever is missplaced. In the end I would choose a Burkart again. I already own one myself :-). Which one did you like the most and why? Greetings Benjamin

I have an Altus so I'm biased, it is probably my favorite alongside the Nagahara. Brannen, whether or silver or gold, are bright - brighter than what I like personally. Burkhart was nice, warmer than the Altus with more overtones. Altus just has the most beautiful singing high register and a darker, sweeter tone overall. Sankyo also has some great pro models now. I'd rank these Altus, Burkhart, Brannen overall. For orchestral playing you'd want the Brannen for the projection.
@Maartenreumkens4 жыл бұрын
I prefer the sound of the 1707 from these short clips. However, I might be biased. I use an 1807 with an original 15/85 Lafin headjoint. I feel it gives me the best of both worlds (Altus/Brannen) when it comes to sound philosophies. I really like the brazed tube and the mechanism on the Altus, but prefer the power and the flexibility of the Lafin over the original Altus cut. For resonance and sheer power it's a combination I would recommend everybody to try out at some if you have the opportunity even though I realize it might not be everybody's cup of tea ;)

I just started listening to your posts for the first time. When you are talking about the specs of the flutes you say French, or open hole. I think this is misleading. I believe the manufacturers are saying the key "style" is French pointed arm keys as opposed to plateau style keys. Both French and plateau style keys can be open holed. But it is not French, or open hole.....which you are alluding to the two terms being synonymous.
@scootermacarthy59904 жыл бұрын
Just a tip here: We don't use the term open holed because holed doesn't have any connection to flutes, the holes, or the process of making holes. This seems to be a commonly misused word for some reason and it gets perpetuated. Hope that helps out!

Why is it these videos hustling high-end flutes from the Flute Center of NY never give the prices of these instruments, many of which are way out of reach of most flutists. I mean, you're talking flutes that are at least $12,000. Makes more sense to buy a respectable used Haynes, Powell, Muramatsu, et al. Many of these older instruments are far superior to the newer low-end models, and by low-end I'm talking anything under about ten grand. Frankly, I don't know how a lot of these high-end flutemakers stay in business.
@BBQJester6 жыл бұрын
those cost as much as a car. unless you're making big bucks in the music business you won't need these flutes
@nelidamolver61266 жыл бұрын
I know you are selling flutes but i can asure u that my old Yamaha 24S sounds as wonderful and fuller than these expensive ones...And the Yamaha is not even silver made. Just silver plated. All nickel. But its from the 70s...where materials where better...the same happens with all brands of flutes. Old is better.
