Dawn, I feel burned out too. So I can relate. I am a critical care nurse, worked in ICU for the past 3 years and worked double shifts. Im also married with 4 kids and 2 dogs. When I came home after work and saw clutter all over my house, I felt stressed. I took 6 months off work and talked to therapist, joined support groups to help me cope with my stress. I also followed your example and decluttered a majority of our excesses and organized what we used and valued. I spent time with my family & friends ❤

Stress comes most frequently for me when there are things happening that affect me, but I have zero control over them. The way I usually deal with that is to start tackling things that ARE in my control. I get physically active tackling projects-decluttering, cleaning, DIY, decorating. Over the course of completing those tasks, I get the dopamine bumps from accomplishment, and I also get the mental space to think through solutions to my stressors.

This suggestion may not be helpful, but you can put cardboard (with no print or dyes) under the landscape fabric and it blocks the weeds really well. Eventually it does break down, but it enriches the soil during that time as well. Just an idea for anyone else interested 😄👍

@@TheMinimalMom When I prepare a bed for a new season, I pull out what I don't want, enrich the soil and bury a lot of my own kitchen waste in it. Then cover the bare earth with a layer of newspapers. It keeps down the weeds, and rests the soil. I put some mulch and compost on the top, so it's a nice clean bed. When I'm ready to plant I push aside the compost, cut a small hole in the papers, put in some potting mix to plant my little seedlings in. I barely have to weed until harvest, and my soil and veggies are wonderful! To be able to have them outside earlier, and protect them against snails and birds I use big, see-through containers (the ones you put your Christmas decorations in for next year) They form a little hothouse. I take them off in the mornings if it's sunny, to let the veggies get used to being outside... I used to have an old curved shower door for this, that works fantastic!

@karenmcmullan836

Another vote for cardboard! Try and use plain cardboard as much as possible and layer with mulch. When the cardboard breaks down, put another layer of cardboard down on top of it with more mulch. I think the recommendation is 3-4 inches but I put more. Another tip: you can get free cardboard from businesses. You can ask or check their backdoor near the dumpster.

I really appreciate your super helpful minimalism reframes (like, "you already have a minimalist closet, it's just surrounded by other clothes"). Your videos really help me take my home to the next - simpler - level. So I am going to counter your weeds question with a reframe: Weeds are free mulch. Instead of seeing them as a garden clutter problem, you can see them as a free source of nutrients for your plants. Just pull them out and use them as mulch. Also, they're such a fun way to learn about local plants. Before I even decide to pull any "weeds" I look up what they are and find out more about their role in the ecosystem. Many, I decide to keep (not 100s, but I'll leave a few). "Permaculture" is a different way to look at all this and is worth looking into. Nature tends to bring what is needed to a space, just because we don't understand the purpose (yet) doesn't mean there isn't one. This is how gardens are different from homes :)

I haven't even watched yet but alarm bells went off at the title of this video! Dawn, if YOU are feeling burned out, how would you like us to support and re-energize you? ...Okay, I have now watched and feel much relief that you are not burned out! But I did want to take one moment to comment on a very important perspective you comment on, about how your future self will thank you. Well, I am NOW my future self (turned 66 in August 2022) and here is what I want to say about it: I found I got blocked very quickly when my present self tried to always live for my future one, because it started feeling like a drudge to always have to prepare, prepare, prepare and not get to just veg out at times. But there was one aspect of accepting how to make life best for my future self that I took totally to heart, and that was managing my finances with wisdom and trust (I could even say faith!). I took to heart in my 20's that the future would come but my actions of today would be what prepared it, and I engineered it so that I saved a portion of my earnings every single time money came in. It seemed so puny at first, but I kept doing it and doing it and doing it, and now 40+ years later (yes, those years really do arrive!), I hug my younger self for being such a good steward and when I look back, there was truly nothing I lacked putting money aside for an eventual day when I would be 66. That is why I am not burned out now - I created the space in my financial life for the future to arrive and I am listening deeply to what you are saying about how to create the space right here and now in your mental life to complete the stress cycle and feel fresh again with each new day.

A great video and I’m am happily exhausted after watching you and the kids work so hard and listening to wisdom. As someone who’s chronically ill, I’m more like a house cat sitting in the window on these glorious days, trying to keep the pain and anxiety away. In addition to the tips you mentioned, “Tapping” is something that can really help with stress. Look it up on KZbin for how tos. Stretching, lymph drainage massage, and most of all prayer are great activators. Sometimes though, you have to just give grace to yourself to deep breathe in and out and stare at a wall if that’s all you can manage. Keep the videos coming! ❤

Pathway weed tip: don't use mulch on top of the fabric. In Michigan, I use a greenhouse quality fabric on paths and beds both. I burn small holes through it to plant; then after the growing season is done, cut the thicker stalks and sweep up the debris. I leave it in place all winter, pull it back in the spring to add compost, then roll it back into place again to plant. The fabric I have have just finished its fifth summer and will be facing its fifth winter. Watch Living Traditions to see it in action. It's not the ideal no-till, Ruth Stout, Back to Eden type perfection, but with four kids and a huge garden...I needed real more than ideal!

This was great! I did not know about completing the stress cycle. It makes sense to have an activity to act as a release valve, especially if you can't solve the larger stressor problem. I was feeling stressed before watching this video and now I'm going to go for a walk to release some of that. Also, I was glad that you asked right at the beginning if we wanted to get some work done with you. I have found that landscape fabric allows the roots to get a good hold. Then either they bring up the fabric with them or the roots break and stay in the fabric to regrow. You might try a heavier grade fabric, like the type you put under gravel. Then do not put the mulch over it bc it gives weed seeds a chance to germinate. (This is what I did in our food garden.) If I use mulch, I use a really thick layer (over 4") and put cardboard under it (no fabric). The cardboard usually lasts long enough to kill the weeds. However, recently, I switched to free coffee bean bags (be sure they are jute) instead of cardboard, and we get a free "chip drop" for our ground cover mulch. Also, I've been seeing some really concerning things about colored mulch that you might like to investigate before putting any more into your food garden. Wish we could have a garden as big as yours! Love it!

This is so great Dawn! You remind me what I learned about the stress cycle. I need to apply it more again! I learned some other easy ways physically deal with the stress: - if you feel like running away (fleeing) “run” at the place you’re standing (or go to the bathroom if you’re in a public place) - push really hard against the wall with your hands if you feel like fighting. Both help your body to “fight” or “flight” and complete the cycle.

Hi Dawn, great video! I didn’t realize I had burnout until seeing this video. Over the summer my hubs was burned in a gasoline fire. I have no words for how that effected us. We had a 6 acre property in NC. We decided to sell and move closer to our kids in Colorado. Well, our house sold in one day and the buyer wanted a 25 day closing. Exhaustion doesn’t even describe it. I love how you put everything into perspective in this video and in all of your videos! Thank you for helping so many people and especially me!

That was a great video. You pegged me exactly in describing the emotional burnout. Especially the part where I'm getting to I don't care anymore. Thanks for all the good insight. It really helped. Let me give you one gardening tip. Next year clear out those pathways and lay heavy landscape fabric and gravel. If you do that you'll never have to replace it again and it'll be much easier to keep it cleaned out. You can actually take a leaf blower and blow the gravel off and you won't have stuff growing up in it. Also captain jacks dead weed brew. Watch Garden answer and check out her videos on the raised bed garden. Thanks for all you do!

Hi Dawn, last year I learned from a wonderful Canadian Soil Scientist KZbinr that tomatoes can be picked when almost mature but still green then layered between newspaper in a cardboard box. I had about 40 lbs. of green tomatoes last year (as not one ripened on the vine) and over a few weeks they all ripened beautifully in cardboard boxes. We were eating them into November and as most of them ripened I cored them then froze them to process at a later date. I was amazed that all of them ripened. What felt like an epic fail turned into an epic success. Thank you for all you do to help people get a grip on their everyday lives. Peace and blessings.

Thanks Dawn, Great job cleaning up the garden! Instead of spraying any weed killer, I'd suggest a couple of barrier alternatives. I frequently use layers of plain cardboard or newspaper under some mulch. I break down thick boxes, remove staples, labels, and tape, and fill the area with those. Then I put down wood chips or even fall leaves in a thick barrier. You can do the same in your garden beds. Spread cardboard down in a couple of layers and then cover with fall leaves. Leaving the paths or the beds bare makes them vulnerable to weeds. Spreading a thick layer of leaves will block out weeds and let the leaves break down into compost over the winter. You can also plant "cover crops" in your vegetable beds over the winter, but it's late for that. It's better done in late September or early October for your climate. You can also plant them with WINTER rye seed (NOT regular rye) and cut that off a couple of weeks before you want to plant in the beds. Just chop and drop in the spring to feed the bed. Check with your farm supply store. May be late in the season for planting that too. Highly productive day, and I'm glad the kids helped too.

Between this video on burnout and your video about the silent to-do list, it’s like a light bulb went off. THAT’S why I’m always stressed! We live on a farm and raise cattle and I have always enjoyed when we go out and work the cattle and I could never explain why. But now I get it. It’s going outside and doing something physical that completed the stress cycle and I always feel so much more calm after days we work cattle. The garden aisles really don't need anything but mulch. I use wood chips and never use the fabric because it seems to allow weeds to grow in from the top down. Weeding will be needed less and less each year as the seed bank in the soil depletes. My theory is that you aren't depleting the seed bank because you're covering the soil with fabric so that when it is exposed to sun and rain the seeds that have been waiting for their chance will sprout. Good luck with your garden. It's such a joy to grow your own food.

For the walkways use a generous amount of baking soda to make the soil more alkaline. You can buy large quantities in the pool section of Walmart, etc. Once soaked into the soil it prevents growth. Also finding 30-45% strength vinegar applied during sunny days will improve weed reduction. These work well on pea gravel paths I'm not sure about mulched paths unless applied under the fabric prior to mulching.

To keep weeds away in pathways: Rock salt- like the big bags of water softener salt or laundry soda (baking soda for laundry, its stronger than regular baking soda), either one you need a good layer but it's really cheap stuff and it blocks roots from being able to absorb water which kills/prevents weeds. I use it it to line the border between my flower beds and the lawn. The really tough crab grass ends up pulling out like butter after a few weeks of letting it work into the soil! Be cautious to only use it where you're not planning to grow stuff later on because the salt will stay in the soil and make it no good for growing in that spot. You also won't want to use it on mulch that you want to dig out for composting later on. But on fence lines or permanent pathways, it's great!

Burnout is becoming my middle name! I'm trying to focus on completing projects before I start a new one, uncompleted projects is a huge stressor of mine. As for the garden, look into the Ruth Stout gardening method or Back to Eden, they're similar to each other but slightly different and help with weed control. Ruth's method is a lot more relaxed than Back to Eden, but same output for each.

About weed control, you can put cardboard on the unplanted beds (not the asparagus) and weight the cardboard with rocks when putting the garden to bed for the winter. This will suppress the weeds making it easier to plan in the spring. Good luck!
