Crazy bastard sailed a hobie cat to the Bahamas. I’m a fan but I think he just legit doesn’t give a damn. Everyone has to come to terms with their own risk of causing their own demise with having a wicked good time. He seems to be having fun and not causing undue risk to others.

This is why I put a fuse on everything. I’m glad it didn’t do much damage but I would definitely look into adding fuses to everything like that. You can even get aftermarket fuse boxes that have like 10 different things so you can run it all to one. Just make sure to put it as close to the battery as possible and don’t put anything in between the fuse and the battery.

Wow, possible fire on board, the only thing worse is an actual fire, glad you are peachy. Suggestion, instead of telling us you tacked or telling us you reefed in the sail, show us; Play it at 2X speed if you want, but I think the actual sailing things are very interesting and fun to watch, as much as the repair things :) Thank You for taking the time and showing us your adventures!

Everybody laughs at my anchor… 55lbs on a 33ft boat. They say it’s HUGE! Seems just about right to me. I can’t believe some of the tiny anchors that I see on boats in the UK! As you say, when the proverbial hits the fan you’re going to wish you hadn’t been so tight down the anchor shop!!! ⚓️

I felt that! Think a common fear is going offshore, but nearshore is where most dangers lay. Coming into a strange inlet or crossing a bar you're unfamiliar with is sketchy and nerve-racking enough in daylight, nightime... ooooofff. I've no shame in saying a few times when I didn't like what I saw I've turned around and done circles offshore waiting for daylight. Glad it all worked out... sure Sam slept like a log. Post stress crash.

GOOD STUFF!! I despise "liners" hiding runs of electrical wiring!! Watching you tracking down the source of the smoke is a reminder of the "unguarded' moment added as your status the "only soul "on board. My hat off to you. Once attempting to enter the CAPE COD CANAL with incoming tide in our face with a 15 knot South Wester added to huge seas and then a squall was a humbling experience save by my two able body sons crawling up to the bow to retrieve a 50-pound anchor busted free from its tie down. Captain! May I verse you "Home the sailor; Home from the Sea; and Home the Hunter from the Land. God Speed with a USN "BRAVO ZULU" [WELL DONE]!!

I recall getting literally spat out of the Faro entrance into standing waves, with a large ship blaring its horn coming in. That was 20+ years ago! Love the Algarve. You can anchor West of Tarifa in some comfort in a Levanta, and dive through the Straight when it dies. Gibs changed a lot since then, the Alcudia marina on the Spanish side is a good option.

Sam, you need a pilot book. Faro has 10kn tide flow coming out into big seas, I know 'cos it cought me out! All your electrical circuits need to be fused, 10amp or less. Sam, on the electrical corrosion, my background is in non-destructive testing and we ran darkroom trucks. We used them to develop the x-ray film, the darkroom chemicals would play havoc with the electrical connections, we frequently had to replace outlets and various connectors. My guess it the salt water is much the same.

Really surprised that USB port didn't come fused. The $15 cheapos I put on my motorcycle from Amazon come fused, and they even give you a couple spares. You might consider buying a can of liquid wire insulation. It's small, brush in the lig, and it lets you paint a vinyl insulation coat on anything. I'd slather it over any electrical connections in your sea environment that aren't completely shrink-sealed (like the hoods on that USB port). One can will last you years, and they're cheap. Enjoy Algarve. I toured it by bicycle a few months ago. I get horribly seasick, but your vids make me want to learn to sail. Last time I did, I was horribly hungover, my friends ordered me a feta omlette at breakfast, and I was on a boat in a race (barely qualified as rail meat), no wind, heavy swell from a storm miles away.

Yeah did that years ago sailing out of the Ft Pierce inlet on a Hobie 16. Worse we had to tack several times just to get atta there as the wind was right in our faces! Fishermen up on the jetty probably thought we were nuts but hey one is only young and stupid once, right? We didn't have the jib out (roller furling rigged) however the main was full (NOT reefed). Probably blowing 20 knots and we were dressed in wet suits as this was right in the middle of winter.

The primary risk with 220/110V electric systems is an electrical shock. The primary risk with 12V systems is fire. Like you, I had a smoldering wire on board my boat and concluded it was time to do a complete rewire, including a new circuit breaker panel. If you do, dont cheap out with household wiring or welding wire, as the insulation can break down if in contact with diesel.

oh those new sails Will Rock... i can't believe you have never had new sails, but it's ok to let a good dyneema laminate spoil you, because they stay like that, holding their shape over time, unlike dacron, which will spoil you; but then it is a slow let down over time, eventually into the same old stretched out baggy diaper sails situation.
