The "cafeteria" style restaurant is what Southerners colloquially call a "meat and 3" because usually you can pick a meat main dish, 3 side dishes, a drink and a bread of some sort; and sometimes a dessert depending on the restaurant.

@@Miss_Kisa94 the meat and 3s in my area cost between $13 - $25. Prices tend to vary on options available and where you are. Taste from good to meh is as good as your popularity, so don't think of a cheap place is a bad/low quality place. The portions are that good ole American large and you can eat it for 2 or 3 meals. You can eat it in 1 go or get it to go, eat there, and save the rest for later.

No, dude, you got it. I'm in Nashville and Memphis a couple of times a year. I've tried a bunch of places, but the best places I've had it it's just really, really good fried chicken with an emphasis on spice. In a lot of places it's just mediocre or bad chicken with an emphasis on spice. I've never seen what the fuss is all about.

chess pie filling is usually butter, flour, sugar, eggs- basically a really sweet, somewhat custardy filling. the actual real way to identify a chess pie is that it is *sweet*. Usually vinegar or lemon juice is added to help offset the sweetness, somewhat, but it's essentially a sugar-custard pie. I think the version you had might have had a bit of cornmeal in, which does something interesting to the texture. I have a massive sweet tooth and chess pie is usually much, much too sweet for me.

The biggest reason our cornbread doesn't taste like jiffy is we don't sweeten it. It's oil, self-rising cornmeal, egg, and buttermilk. And chess pie tastes a lot like pecan pie to me, but without the nuts. You should try southern biscuits and gravy the next time you're down here, and maybe visit the Pancake Pantry if you go back to Nashville or Gatlinburg.

I've lived in the Austin area for about 20 years, and I feel the same about our restaurants. As soon as there is notoriety the food quality starts to slide. It's like you have to know when the best chefs/cooks are on shift or something because it's so unreliable. And when local places become chains, the first original and sometimes the 2nd are still good but the others aren't the same. It gets disappointing when you don't have much money or you are like me these days and just don't like to go out much. Is such a roll of the dice.

I usually go to the one on Charlotte Pike or 8th ave. They’re further from downtown, but usually aren’t as busy. To give Prince’s a fair fight you should go to the one on Nolensville Rd in south Nashville. The one on Broadway is like a food court version and not the full experience. Prince’s is considered the original place in Nashville. Bolton’s in east Nashville is also a good option

Damn, I was curious about the "shut the cluck up" one, guess I should stick to mid. Thanks for your sacrifice. Glad you went on a mini trip, Nashville looked better than Times Square to my tasteless eyes. Probably cause I'm a country girl I guess. Times Square makes me anxious.

I'm glad to live close enough to Nashville to get hot chicken every now and then. I gasped when you covered your fingers in the 'Shut the cluck up' oil because I know from personal experience that you'll need to wipe the tears away very, very soon. I prefer the 'Damn Hot' sandwich so the pain isn't as distracting from the flavor.

First time I went to Hattie’s, I got the STCU flavor, so painful and so delicious. They used to have those little honey bears at each table. And it worked so well with the spice. Now there’s one in Memphis and I love gotta restrain from the pain on the daily 😩

Omg he’s coming to Dallas! It would be so dope to actually run into the man, the myth, the voice… Eat some Mexican barbecue, it’s different that that popular place in deep ellum, there’s a place called Que Buen Taco and it’s located in a super 7 mini mart, order the Carne Asada, its off of Elam Rd in Balch Springs which is close to Dallas, like 15-20 minutes.

if you ever end up back at Hattie B’s, get the Dirty Bird Loaded Fries. Crinkle cut fries, pimento mac and cheese, fried chicken, pickles, and green onions. Absolutely divine.

Love it when he says rate from one to tain. This guy is great. 1 day I will visit america too. I always hear that american barbecue is good but don't know what state to go to in order to try it? Also, what did Nashville people used to eat before the place became famous for it's fried chicken? Anybody he grew up there in the 80s or 90s must have eaten some food that isn't greasy or badly seasoned

Im born and raised in Tennessee, and used to go to Hattie B's back in the day before Nashville turned into a giant slum. It used to be a little shack behind a CVS off 21st ave. I am extremely surprised to see that they are a massive restaurant now with merch and everything lmao. I never thought it was any good, but my mom liked it, so I would take her there every sunday after church.

Nothing like some rolls, collard greens, fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and some oven baked Mac and cheese. One of my aunts makes some delicious seasoned string beans too. Miss those days.
