I have played all three games in the series. Thrill Drive 3 has a haptic seatbelt feature that you wear before playing that literally strangles you when you get into a crash.

Fun fact : Burnout 1 actually has a canceled Japanese version under the name "Heaven's drive", which goes even more to show its inspiration. It was canned after the deal didn't went through with Sega (not Konami oddly). The Japanese build was actually found last year and it can be downloaded from The Hidden Palace. Also Thrill Drive 3 actually ran on a retail PS2, Konami only gave it a custom BIOS and a few tweaks to support dongle protection and JVS.

Oh my god, you just unlocked a memory i've forgotten about for years, I remember playing Thrill Drive 3 in the arcades and my god that game was loud, the speakers were at the headrest of your seat and they were always at full volume, so everytime I crash, the screams go directly into my ears, still haunts me today

If you want to pick the other locations, you have to calibrate the steering in the game's Test Menu. Trust me, it fixes the problem.

I played this on an arcade machine for a couple minutes when I was a little kid on vacation and it totally stuck with me. It was unlike anything I had seen at that time at home on the PS1, until Burnout came out years later on the PS2. It bugged me for more than 20 years until I found a random comment on KZbin that referenced this game, it was like a life long mystery was finally solved. I'm glad more people are talking about this, the crash physics and graphics definitely seem like they were ahead of their time and the influence this had on Burnout is undoubtable.

Funnily enough Thrill Drive started how it did and eventually turned into Burnout 3 with checkpoints by the 3rd game, except you could also drive as a Rubby Ducky being called Ducky by the cops. Hey TD4 even has powerups and absolutely NOTHING unsettling about it.

The drastic change in tone would explain why Burnout 1's music turns a LOT more dramatic after you crash... three times, if I remember correctly. I always found the OST shift to be a bit unsettling, as a kid. Now I know why they did that.

Being an arcade enthusiast it's probably obvious I'd mention this but, emulating this series won't do it justice since sitting in a real cabinet really is a special experience with this game. I shall never forget those screams.. If anyone wants to see more gameplay I recommend the channel CrazyUniform88. I love watching his arcade gameplay videos and he loves to play the Thrill Drive games regularly.

don't know if it was mentioned in the comments but the location test version before release actually had the ability to run over civilians to somewhat gruesome effects. the feature was removed as a konami developer at the time when asked about it, said "we didn't want any controversy" or something along those lines.

I vaguely remember playing this on breaks while working at a service station for a brief period of time. It was 20 years ago but i do recall there being 2 machines & either a 2 player option or me & one or two colleagues would race at the same time to see who could get further. Man, this (and HOTD2) was my shit back when arcades are the top. I still remember completing all race courses and I hated the night level because it's kinda tight and there are cliffs that you can fall to. What I don't like in this game is when you got into an accident it will show a cutscene of how you crashed your car and it takes a lot of your time and wasted because of it. To be honest, I never knew the name of the arcade game because it was in Japanese until now. Great video man! Keep up the good work!

For this game I believe, After you finish the race and the race time is ranked on the leaderboard, it will show up as "Congratulations. You are a Thrill Driver" when entering your name. Running out of time or finishing 4th and the cost of state will be ranked on the bad driver leaderboard. While in Burnout, both the race time and cost of state will be added after the race. Other features in 2 and 3: 2 shows up the cost of state on the hud while 3 features the infraction system, meaning that how long your driver's license will get suspended, or you'll pass without making infractions.

​@@eurikadude Regarding Thrill Drive on MAME, the reason you can't select the other courses is that MAME's analog controls with this game is pretty messy and it is way too slow to even select where you are selecting.
