You want to tell me about other quality racing titles and Imma let you finish, but Burnout 3 is still the best racing game of all time! Trust me, I checked. Edit: Many of you have told me that Burnout Paradise DOES have a Crash Mode. No, it doesn't. It has "Showtime" which you can activate at any time and it is NOT the same thing. There’s no puzzle element to it, you just bounce your car endlessly around the world to rack up damage. It’s mindless. The closest to Burnout's ability to appeal to anybody, regardless of interest in cars, is probably Wreckfest. A new Burnout title with that game's scale and budget would be amazing. As for favorite song? Definitely Andy Hunter's "Come On" in Revenge. One of my goals is to put that song in a movie or game that's even more appropriate, but I don't think it's possible.

There are a couple songs in Burnout 3 that push my "shit just got real" button, those being "This Fire" by Franz Ferdinand and "I'm Not Okay (I Promise) by MCR. There's something so heart wrenchingly satisfying about hitting the boost at the opening riff, as you zoom down that crowded highway at 200 mph, then immediately shunting my rivals into a rail at the first verse. My first introduction to Burnout was finding a downloaded copy of Paradise on my cousin’s Xbox 360. They didn’t even remember getting it. That was like 10 years ago. Now, I play Burnout Paradise on my Xbox One all the time, and I’m constantly having fun. Weaving through traffic while flying at insane speeds, refusing to take my finger off the boost button, it gives me a feeling no other racing game has. And I love it. Yeah, screw you and your high-quality, slow-paced racing game. You think I came here for realism? I came here for pure adrenaline and a good time. And burnout Paradise delivers.

Burnout 3 is the only racing game that could ever make me cry... It is crazy how much this game makes me cry every time I play it. Who would have ever thought a racing game could be so emotional? So many different elements combine to make this game such an emotional experience for someone who actually experienced it back in the day when it was new. Every one of the kickass early 2000's rock songs on the soundtrack has the perfect combination of uplifting happy energy, emotional sadness, and nostalgia from a by-gone era that some of us still hold onto so tightly and never want to let to... Thinking about all the memories of playing this game with my dad and what life was generally like back in 2004/5/6, and how most young people will never know what it was like and how us old people will never be able to go back... Thinking about how great and unique the Burnout franchise is and it's practically dead since we haven't gotten a new game since Paradise... Thinking about how there are no other racing games like Burnout, no other franchise offers everything it does and does it so well... The developers did such an amazing job with every aspect these masterfully crafted games, including all of the experimental elements of Paradise... Thinking about how the devs at Criterion did such a great job creating and perfecting the BEST racing game franchise OF ALL TIME for us to enjoy... Thinking about how impressive the technology and quality of the game is despite the hardware limitations of running on the PS2 and Xbox... Thinking about how no other franchise will ever give us the same experience... Every time I boot up this game and get to the main menu it never fails to give me goosebumps because of all these different things... What a game...

I feel you mate. The game was a big influence on my Music preference. That sunny Pop-punk soundtrack, with some Melodic Hardcore and Alternative thrown in was masterful. It made you feel all happy yet melancholic at the same time. It's the perfect soundtrack to nostalgia. This is my favourite game of all time. I spent the most time playing it than any other video game. It's just that good. Crazy to think that this year it'll turn 20. I really hope EA Remasters it at least and release for the PS4/PS5. But it's a bit unlikely since they absolutely ignored NFS Underground's 20 year anniversary last year. Anyway, since Criterion is back developing NFS games, there's hope that maybe they'll push EA a bit. So there's still small chance. I can't play this game anymore cause my PS2 copy is just gone now. I can't find any other copies of the game. But I have about 10 years worth of memories playing this game.

2:36 I actually had to stop for a minute and cry. Because yes, that's exactly the realization that's tortured me for the past 10 years. Games used to be fun, they used to be incredibly fun. Now they're so loaded down with disgusting player torture mechanics designed to only make money and check boxes to fit a category, the same soullessnes that has been torturing the music industry just as long. It's horribly depressing. What happened to us? To videogaming? To the passion and creativity we shared?

@@TheAntlionGuard That's a good point to bring up, if you're looking for games made with passion it's effectively indie or bust. The number of AAA exceptions has dwindled down to From Software, Namco Bandai, and Nintendo (through an ocean of exclusives), who only really feed a few niches each, leaving a lot of genres out in the cold. BUT, if you're exploring the indie scene you've had a cornucopia of games to pick from for the past few years, admittedly of wildly varying quality. The best of which often being subgenre crossing experiments like Obra Din and Craftopia, or love letter games like Dangerous Driving and M.A.V. that fill in for subgenres that've otherwise been left behind.

Correction: Burnout Paradise DOES have a separate crash mode called "Showtime". On PS3 to activate it you had to press L1+L2 on the controller and your car would automatically flip and you would keep it flipping and tumbling into traffic by pressing X, using boost. Boost would recharge when you hit other cars and racked up streaks of ten hits. Unfortunately you can't turn your car into a bomb, but there are powerups hidden in the form of street signs and buses which multiplied your final score. If you managed to set a good score on every street on the map, you would be rewarded with a special car, just like you would by completing "Road Rules", which is basically free roam time attack down a certain street. It's good fun, but I still prefer the chaotic racing and Road Rage events :)

Yeah, the same here! Or edgy indie games that all want to be the “dark souls” of racing games, or just want to be stuck in re-doing the old games and not much iterating on them. A thing I don’t understand is why some of actually really good indie arcade racers currently don’t have native support for racing wheels. It would make sense to recreate that old school arcade feeling.

As a sim racer that grew up on arcade racing games on the PS2... It's sad, man. There's an increasingly low amount and quality of racing you can have with a gamepad, as opposed to the wide berth of popular racing simulator titles. But when I don't feel like setting up my wheel, I want to just chill and drive with a controller, and it's sad that my best options for that are all 10-15 year old games at this point. Even Forza Horizon 5, which I loved on release, now feels samey and repetitive.

We were so spoiled for spectacular racing games at the time weren't we? It's a shame we would only realise years later that we were living in the golden age. I mean, in this 2000-2010 decade we had: Test Drive Unlimited Burnout 3, Burnout Revenge, Burnout Dominator and Burnout Paradise Midnight Club 3 and Midnight Club LA Gran Turismo 3 and 4 Flatout 1 and 2 NFS Hot Pursuit, Underground, Underground 2, Most Wanted, Carbon, ProStreet and the 2010 Hot Pursuit MotorStorm, MotorStorm Pacific Ridge and Arctic Edge Wipeout Fusion, Pure, Pulse and Wipeout HD, which in my opinion is the most graphically impressive game in the PS3 system Blur, which personally I've never played, but it seems to be universally regarded as a forgotten gem Split/Second Dirt 1, 2 and 3 And a particular favourite of mine that is for some reason really unknown: Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 3 There's probably even more that I don't remember right now. Nowadays we're lucky if there's a good racing game released in a year, and it's usually indie or small developers pushing boundaries. A few months ago I was in a bit of a slump, not really enough to be considered depressed per se, but I was disillusioned with life. And one of the main motives behind this was that there never seemed to be anything new that excited me, and being quite the avid gamer since a young age, I felt this a lot with the new games that were announced and released. Nothing hyped me up, nothing seemed to be better than what I remembered playing in my childhood. So I decided to install PCSX2 in my PC and play Midnight Club 3 and some others of these classics again. I went into this fully expecting to sink even deeper into my slump when I realised that I was looking back at my experiences through pink lenses of nostalgia and the games weren't as good as I remembered. I was wrong. The excitement and craving for playing more and more that I hadn't felt in years returned full force. I actually found myself anxious to return home from class everyday to continue trying to get 100% completion on Midnight Club 3 and NFS ProStreet. I realised that, yes I had become more cynical and jaded over the years, but that wasn't the reason why I didn't feel excited about anything new that came out. It was because these 20 year old games ACTUALLY DID WIPE THE FLOOR with the face of these games that are being released nowadays.

Burnout 3 absolutely was the peak of the series. I wanted to like Dangerous Driving, but the main issue (aside from the lack of city courses) was that it was too easy to crash yourself and your opponents. A gentle nudge will take out another racer, and just brushing up against a non-racer will instantly wipe you out.

I would love to agree, but I think Revenge topped 3 in just about everyway. It took literally everything 3 did correctly and fixed what it didn't do. 3 has the best music tho! ;) Then Dominator came out I think shortly after Revenger and chopped a lot of what those 2 games did up into so e kind of muscle car simulator while leaving out most of the fun stuff, including crash mode. I think this is where the series started bottoming out.

That game is truly special. If I go play it right now I can easily spend a few hours on it accidently. Revenge imo downgraded the risk/reward system of 3 that made it so good by being able to push traffic away. Takedown was my introduction to the series, and it definitely made a strong first impression. Later on I tried most of the rest of the games through the years, and while I still enjoy B3 a lot, Revenge remains my favourite because of how chaotic it is. Dominator without any sort of crash mode felt weird, but I respect that the racing is still intense. The first two games are a lot less insane and obviously were small steps before Burnout found its way to stand out. Paradise is fun for a bit but I at least don't feel an incentive to replay it once I did everything. Showtime replacing the former crash mode format was awkward; still somewhat enjoyable in its own right, but for me, less than having all carnage happen in a specific spot, with explosions on top.

Loved how all the games' soundtracks easily gets me pumped up in any situation, not just playing a Burnout game. It's because of this series and some of my friends I've found my favourite genres of music to listen to (mainly post-hardcore, hardcore and emo). I'd definitely say the song that I never skip while playing Burnout is Collapse by Saosin. It's quite honestly timeless as a post-hardcore song! It's just sad to see 3 wasn't added to the current xbox backwards compatibility as research shows EA did not want Revenge to be added, and yet it was added a few years after that statement. Personally I bought 3 Takedown for xbox in 2020 to play on my Xbox 360, that's my 2nd copy because F playing a blurry PS2 version, and I immediately got my Xbox 360 disc of Revenge and played that on Xbox One when it was added to the program. Here I am - The Explosion : Is the song that I never skipped while playing Burnout 3 Takedown and I can easily identify with because "Whatever happened to the golden age, it's gone yeah". And that's exactly how I feel when I see what happened to Burnout Series and even Video Gaming Industry in general. I don't feel the same emotions when I play a video game made today and then, simply because I feel that the passion given into it is not the same. (I do not say that today video games are bad, in the contrary!) Since internet has come in the center of video games (with online multiplayer and updates), the developpers are more "free" in making video games in terms of budget and possibilities, which is cool but sometimes I feel that some of them are very lazy and settle on upcoming updates and dlcs to fix their lack of work. And the thing I regret more particularly is that I miss the "Arcade" era so much, the era when the video game was just an entertainment, a way to enjoy playing and beat your friend's high score. But today, I feel like people want to make video games as something as absolutely realistic, and want to get rid of that "entertaining" side of the video game like it was decades ago to make something that goes on top on trendings and benefit. I know that the arcade era hasn't disapeared, there are still good arcade games made today. But I just want to see a game (and a racing game for instance) that can bring back these amazing mechanics that mixes realism and arcade wisely without having to choose one side, and most importantly a game made with passion, a game which isn't restricted by budget or time (it's a bit hard to think that today but what if it was possible?).

yeah, I feel something same nowadays, not just Burnout, these feelings come up when recalling any of your/my favourite games... The important thing is people absolutely love things they were experiencing in their childhood, I won't go into the details though. For me such games like Burnout 3 are warm to the heart, because I actually played them 15 years ago during the relatively short period, when I borrowed xbox.o, and I believe same thing is about you, isn't it? However objectical thing you were talking about is still existing, and I totally agree with you. Despite "childhood syndrome" modern gaming is something a bit different, bursting in technical and marketing progression, but lacking those pure, sincere and wholesome traits of the past. And this "gap" feeds our nostalgia and melancholy, good and bad at the same time in some meanings... But you recalled a growing possibility for more people to do games freely. That is where indie games were born. And this thing is something modern, fresh, and gives hope and joy. If you want smth warmhearted, soulful, fun, interesting and unordinary - you should dive deep into indies, because though it can't revive the past, it provides with something satisfying and entertaining in similar way

I know I'm a little late to the party here, but Burnout Paradise does actually have a separate crash mode. It's kind of a secret though. You have to input a specific combination of buttons that I'm unable to recall (Maybe just pressing both bumpers on your controller at once, don't quote me on that though), and they don't tell you that anywhere in the entire game. But it basically makes your car tumble and bounce along the road and you have to try to bounce your way into traffic to gain more money. If you reach a certain score on EVERY SINGLE ROAD AND STREET IN THE GAME, you unlock one of the (5?) secret cars. I should also mention that this applies to the pre-remake version, I'm unsure about the post-remake version.

My entry and favorite is Burnout 2. But burnout paradise, back then with non competitive online play was damn amazing. Filling a lobby with friends, if everyone had a camera on their console, and flip them off when taken down, or just having like reaction cards to snap shot with, that was so much fun. Thanks for unlocking this memory.

Burnout 3 and Revenge are honestly as close to perfect as racing games could ever get imo. while i don't entirely agree with your gripes on Revenge but they are certainly valid. As for favorite song, it's Come On by Andy Hunter from Burnout Revenge. I can't imagine going through a session of Burnout Revenge without playing this banger of a track.

Thing is, a game like the old burnout games just wont sell well today. Every game now has to be this massive AAA experience where they have to check as many boxes as possible to even hold a chance of selling well. Burnout 3 level of success can not happen nowadays. Best shot of burnout coming back is if they followed the paradise formula and made it bigger and grander.

Burnout 3 is my favorite Burnout game too! I've played it when I was a kid with my best friend almost every weekend, and during the week, I practiced to be better than him and now... It just brings back memories... memories I wanna enjoy once again. I wanna have this feeling of just fun and competitiveness like the game portrayed. It had an arcade touch to it so that's what was really fun. I miss those days and hell I would pay any amount for a new Burnout game that's around the same genre as we know them as.

Burnout takedown 3 will FOREVER be my most beloved racing title. It was the first game I ever binge played for YEARS. One thing I loved so much was the feeling of being connected to others in the community and cameos from other EA Games. A good example is thr SSX series, most notably SSX 3, it was ANOTHER beloved favorite and it coming before burnout takedown 3, the DJ in BT3 makes a cameo reference to the DJ and TV producers of SSX within the same game world. So Burnout and SSX exist in the same world together.

The song that I never skip, that is just absolute perfection in a high stakes, fast paced racing game, is The Mooney Suzuki's "Shake That Bush Again." It starts off so simple, and then becomes a typical rock song that I can smash into other cars happily while listening to. It gives me that extra edge on the track that I need to win.

Tbh, to answer your question about the best licensed song that gets me amped, it's A7X Beast and the Harlot, but, honestly ist the Burnout theme that make me super excited. Great vid, this series was epic. Also, Black was fun af back in the day

The games are irreplaceable masterpieces, even the entries that were not so perfect. Dang, I wanna try Burnout 3. And to the song I would never skip? It would be "Us V. My favorite Burnout is actually Paradise, I like how different it was from other titles when it came out, and it was the only Burnout I had as a kid. There is somewhat of a spiritual successor to crash mode called "showtime", but I find it the most underwhelming part of the game, as well as the most hidden. You activate it (at least on Playstation) by pushing down on both sticks at the same time. Try it out!

I literally forgot about Burnout until now. The games definitely need a return and seeing those sequences with the crash mode was like a wave of nostalgia. But my concern, just like many others I'm sure, would be that if the games did return then they would be riddled with MTX.

During my high school days, there used to be a gaming cafe called Roxx Coffee House And Games close by between home and school. During my Junior and Senior year of high school, I would sometimes walk down to the cafe after school, sometimes with friends and other times during days I'm not really doing anything and felt like gaming out of the house. They had multiple gaming computers set up along 4 rows of table space with a decent roster of pc games from WOW, Supreme Commander, Starcraft, Counter Strike Source and probably a few others I've forgotten after so long. They also had a big screen tv that you could hook up an Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, Gamecube or PS4. One of the games they had for console, was Burnout 3 and when I got the chance, I would play it for the full hour I payed for. Easily on my list for top 3 racing games I have ever played, sadly, I could save progress so each time my time was up and I had to leave or I left and felt like going to pc to play, I would have to play a fresh start every time, but despite that I still enjoyed coming back to play it. Couple great game play with some of the best soundtracks for a racing game I have ever heard, you've got one of the best racing games to have ever come out from the starting decade of the century. Before I played Burnout 3 though, my parents got me a 2007 PSP, which I still have today and even got another one just to play my old PSP games again and one of those games is Burnout Dominator, another good instalment to the Burnout series. While it's not fully like Burnout 3, it's still great gameplay and has some really good soundtracks that I can promises you will love just the same. The Burnout series has been one of those wild rides that I never really got enough of, even after completing Burnout Dominator to 100% at least 4 times since I got the game.
