I'm 42. When I first started going out when I was 18 (1998) the "no trainers (sneakers)" rule was in full effect. You just wouldn't go out wearing them. But some clubs were even more strict than that, insisting you had to have a collar (i.e. wear a smart shirt) and some would turn you away for having visable tattoos. Nowadays you can wear pretty much what you want as long as you don't look drunk or homeless

Was coming back from a open air concert/festival in Slovakia pretty late at night. Got a taxi, lucky, but there were 6 of us and only seating for 3/4. And another taxi wasn't going to be coming any time soon. So, we had the driver. One passenger in the passenger seat. Three passengers crammed onto the back seat. One laying across their laps and one in the boot (trunk). Gave the driver a few extra Crowns (Koruna) and he was up for it. We had to try to keep as low a profile as possible and fingers crossed, because if we got pulled over, we'd all be in trouble, but the driver most of all. On the way back we actially saw, by the roadside, a car that had been pulled over and was being checked by the police. They knew about the festival and were pulling over cars checking for drink drivers (drink driving is almost considered a participant sport in Slovakia. Big drinking culture). The guy in the boot kept banging, we kept have to keep telling him to STFU, you're attracting attention. Fun times.

I think the no trainers rule is pretty much gone today apart from the more high end clubs. I've never seen anyone turned away for what they're wearing as long as you look put together.

The only unrealistic element of this is that there's no way they would have driven into London; they don't live far and trains run all night. They would have got on a train without paying so they had to dodge the conductor all the way and leap over gates without getting caught. At least one of them would have thrown up on the train seats having drunk their body weights in VK Blue.

Even really bad clubs back then always had codes-no trainers. Have to wear a collared shirt. No tattoos on show. I think the 18+ drinking limit over here a part of it as trainers and tshirts were for kids. A lot of the time though it was just anything to pick if they simply didnt want you in there really.
