Bob is a year older than me so born 1959/60 and it was a very different world back then. Children were out all day playing, climbing trees, exploring woods, out on our bikes, in and out of each others houses for drinks or for a pee (Mums were mostly at home in those days). As long as we were home for tea, or before it got dark whichever came first, it was all good. We got dirty, scraped our knees, all sorts of things that children today don't get to experience (sadly). We didn't have much in the way of money but we had freedom to be children and loved every minute of life. 😊

I found these British game shows and late nite shows during Covid. I laughed so much on all of them. They really have a great sense of humor. Got me thru Covid. Don’t know why the US won’t let our comics be this funny. I loved them all. He’s very popular in UK. He’s hilarious. They are all hilarious.

It's the details which make them so good. The guy named Cheeseman (36:07), they called 'Cheesy'. Fair enough, totally normal. But it was not because of his name, it was because his mother gave him cheese slices since that was good for his skin. The same guy had a head so big that they called it 'a Sniper's Dream'. "Bytheway" is a real surname by the way! . This interesting surname is of early medieval English origin, and is a topographical name for one whose home was beside a main highway. Bob went to the same 6th Form College as me (aged 16-18) and 20 years later, they were still telling stories of him prancing about for Red Nose Day dressed as a playboy bunny - now that's a mental image! He also once painted his mum's house bright pink with bright green trim as a joke as she hadn't given him specific instructions! It stayed that was for decades until the lovely Mrs Mortimer passed away. I also had Bill Whittlingham as a teacher and he was full of Bob stories too :D

Growing up in the UK in the 1960s, the two main fireworks brands were Standard and Brocks. Standard fireworks was founded in 1891. Now they are just another Chinese firework brand. Back when they were founded, "Standard" was a prestigious name. In the sense of "royal standard" being a martial flag. For example, there was also a British car manufacturer named The Standard Motor Company Limited founded in Coventry, England, in 1903.

You really need to see Vic and Bob doing what they do. It´s not standup. It´s just madness. And here´s a story I don´t think Bob has ever told on the show: at the 1995 Brit Awards, Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker got irritated by Michael Jackson´s performance of Earth Song, during which he stood in a cruxifiction type pose while swarms of children walked around him morosely. So, in protest, Jarvis jumped onstage, made wafting signs from his buttock area and ran around being chased by security as MJ tried to finish his song. It all went to court. Jarvis got Bob to be his lawyer. Jarvis got away with it.

Bob's remarkable. He's a former solicitor who teamed up with Vic Reeves (Jim Moir) to form the comedy duo Reeves and Mortimer. They had a success with Shooting Stars. Then remade the classic 60s detective show Randall and Hopkirk (Bob playing private eye Jeff Randall) These days he's in Gone Fishing with Paul Whitehouse. Which is just Bob and Paul going fishing and having an amusing chat.

He also does an extremely funny (and strange) podcast called Athletico Mince which is nominally about football but isn't really. He also does a great TV show with Paul Whitehouse where they go fishing and pontificate about life. He's funny in everything he does.

Theft and shrubbery sounds like a game we played called "Grand National" we sneaked through people's gardens making animal noises until someone came out and chased us, then the grand national started,... like the horse race... we'd race and jump over garden hedges and fences to the end of the street, with winners and losers, obviously. The ‘other guy’ is called David Mitchell. He is a well known comedic actor/writer/panellist in the uk. He wrote and starred in a few sketch shows one of which is called ‘that Mitchell and Webb look’ and also was in a show called ‘peep show’ both of those shows also starred his comedy partner Robert Webb. They are both in a more recent sitcom called ‘Back’ they are both very talented and funny as duo and separately. You should also check out a female comedian that was also in the ‘fireworks’ story clip. Her name is Sarah millican. She is very funny! You would really like her stand up stuff I think

The other, 'other guy', the one sat next to Bob is Lee Mack, if anyone was wondering Definitely recommend checking out some of the Mitchel & Webb things, the sketch shows are a good starting point - "are we the baddies", "homeopathic hospital", "numberwang"... Sarah Millican is funny, also worth checking out. I also highly recommend Diane Morgan (I think thats her surname, need to check), the woman with red hair who was on same side as Bob, as she is also extremely funny. She's done some stand-up stuff at Edinburgh fringe etc, alongside Joe Wilkinson, and she also plays the role of Philomena Cunk, originally on Charlie Brooker's programme, and later a few episodes of her own spin off iirc.

Have any fans of Bob Mortimer tried ‘ Gone Fishing’ with Mortimer and Whitehouse? I’m not a fishing fan but the programme is terrific. Beautiful filming of some of the most gorgeous British countryside, chuckles and the occasional belly laugh and some quite moving conversations between two lifelong friends. Bob is my favourite person to watch, there's no problem that can't be lightened by watching him bamboozle anyone he's talking to. I think the "apple parting" is one of my all time favourite TV moments, it stuns everyone and it's just so funny when he does the triumphant reveal! What a skill! Honourable mention to Kevin Bridges, Rhod Gilbert, James Acaster, Henning Wehn and Greg Davies, as they all have a couple of absolutely crazy stories themselves on WILTY. And Claudia Winkleman is an extremely good liar, she learned from Bob I reckon! I'd be so honoured to sit down in a pub and have a pint with Bob. You can easily imagine it being the absolute best night ever!

"Standard" as a brand designator in those days was quite common for several classes of consumer goods. It implied that at least some extra standard of quality was being offered. This was in contrast to the adulterated or poor quality products that existed before consumer protection laws codified "minimum" standards, which is what we associate the word with today. In those days "Standard" implied an aspiration to consistency, not mediocrity. In that era, if other fireworks went phut, or blew up in your face, a Standard firework was expected to do what it said on the box .

There were 2 common common brands of fireworks back when I was a kid, "Standard" and "Brocks". Bob Mortimer _does_ have an autobiography, he really has led quite an interesting life. I still find the strangest thing about his is that he was professionally a practising lawyer - you'd never guess it. Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer were a huge part of my formative teenage years, so he's one of those people I always have time for and he hasn't changed a bit.

If you like to hear Bob's stories, I'd recommend you listen to or read his autobiography. Very poignant in places and a real insight into life for a lad growing up in the 60s and 70s in England. I could relate to it a lot. You'll hear a lot more about these stories, quite sad some of them (along with his health scare a few years ago) and how he struggled to fit in as a kid but also many funny stories as you'd expect.

I actually just split an apple with my own bare hands while watching Bob do it on here and let me tell you it does take a lot of forearm and finger strength... must be a Middlesbrough thing from years past though as I distinctly remember doing this when I was maybe 9 or 10 so someone must have shown me at some point back then. In answer to your comment - "He must have been a handful at school." My Uncle was in his form class for around 5 years and sat near to him most of that time. He was so quiet that he didn't realise this was the same Bob Mortimer he actually went to school with, until years after he became famous.

23:40 that Steve guy (forgot his last name) is kind of like the British Steve Irwin. He knows a lot about animals and used to do a wildlife show (forgot the name) which is why he knew Bob was lying about the owl straight away

heh and the funny thing is that Bob is considered the tame one of Reeves and Mortimer. But you can see why Jim took to Bob right away and wanted to team up with him. Bob is just a naturally funny guy without even trying. This clip also shows just how funny David Mitchel is and how lightning quick and witty Lee Mack is. Oh and a little aside, The red headed lady on Bob's team is Katherine Parkinson from Doc Martin and most famously From The I T Crowd. HIGHLY recommend The IT Crowd if you havent seen it. Vic and Bob both share the same comedic sensibilities (let's call it surrealist, but that doesn't quite explain it, because most of it is quite grounded), however, I think because Bob is much more unthreatening looks-wise (he is cute, but Vic/Jim is very good looking), he can pull off all this stuff much better. Stewart Lee had the same problem. One of the funniest comedians in Britain since he was about 18, but he was just too good looking when he was younger so he just came off as an arrogant prat. He had to get fat, grey haired and old before his comedy worked.

Way back when, I went to see Vic & Bob (Vic Reeves, real name Jim Moir) when they were just starting out and was lucky to spend time with them (drinks) after their show. It was one of the funiest nights I ever had. Vic & Bob were the surealists of comedy. I think they invented the "banter panel show" were no one really cares about points just the banter with "Shooting Stars" show. "Vic Reeves Big Night Out" was surreal, Then "The Smell of Reeves & Mortimer", "Shooting Stars" was great with Mark Lamar. I met them again breifly at a "Tube" recording (music show, Jooles Holland, Paula Yates etc) in Newcastle. Always great to see either of them on telly now. Bob always cracks me up ! David Mitchel is a great foil for Bobs' humour.
