Thank you Lars! My Hungarian Father and Uncles would each have a chunk of Bacon like yours and slabs of Dark Bread during our American Cook Outs. They would just put them on Skewers and start cooking them over the fire. When the Fat started dripping, they'd just hold it over the bread, let it drip, then eat some bread, then just back and forth. When the meat part was cooked to their taste, they'd just pull it off the Skewer onto the Bread and have a Bacon Sandwich! Papa told me they learned how to that during WW2, but they'd just cut some branches off a tree and peel the bark off. No need to carry Pots, just a water bottle, matches and a pocket knife, plus the bread and bacon would be wrapped up just like you showed. Sometimes, the Old Ways are the Best Ways! Thank You Again!

Those are good tastes! I never heard of this. Found some black bread and bacon in the freezer, I'm trying it tomorrow. Oddly, in Miami, FL, where there is no winter, and ice is something you buy. I really like to see how it goes in the snow, I dream of this! I cooked some buckwheat out in the forest after watching your video, it didn't burn and was really delicious. You know? I heard you say "Get out and train" a hundred times until I finally listened. I was just collecting "emergency" supplies, but not practicing.... So, thanks! Maybe someone else got to him. But anyway, whatever your Mess Kit is made of, that DESIGN from 1931 Germany is still AWESOME! It works much better than my US Army Cook Set ( which is basically a Frying Pan with a Lid). Plus, as a US Military Veteran (US Navy Submarine Service, 76-86), I appreciate Good Kit, no matter where it comes from. Keep on doing what you do. I know your "General Winter" has to Retreat for awhile, but at least you get to work on the Survival Vehicle during the Mud Season. Best of all things to you and your Family.

I spent years hunting/camping in Upper Peninsula Michigan. When a tree falls and lodges, it's easier to start sawing from the bottom as the wood is stretching, pulling away from the blade, so no binding IF THE SAW CUTS ON THE PULL STROKE. At about 1/2 way up, a sharp blow above the cut will snap the tree in half very often. Use another, smaller cut branch, an axe handle or even the edge of a shovel. Don't jump on it as it'll be springy if it doesn't snap and might injure you. Far from civilization, safety must be 1st - especially if solo in the woods, which I always was.

Hi Lars, Thanks vor your very interesting and also earthbound Videos. I always appreciate them. When you pour the water out of your swedish messkit, it looks a little bit awkward and dangerous too. But there is an easy trick to it, to have a save and stable way of Handling the hot pot in a secure manner. Take the hook on the bail and put its end into the metal lash at the side of the pot that is meant for lashing it to a pack for transportation. So you get the bail sideways and stable to handle your pot without risking a splash of hot water over your hands. It is not my invention. You can find a video in KZbin, about how to use this Type of kit correctly. So Long and have a good time in the woods

I always use my cheap mora which is stainless steel for cooking and the small tasks. My bigger more expensive knife sits and waits for something the Mora can't do. No reason to damage the knife I will end up depending on in an emergency.
@Kayakwinds7 жыл бұрын
In point of fact, most of what I do equates to "small tasks." About 90 percent of what I do, I can do with my model 8 Opinel. And that is usually the knife I use, since it is always with me--at work or play. The Mora travels with me into the woods, along with a folding saw and Opinel. I'm hard pressed to know what other blades I might need, even in an emergency.
