I was raised in the Redwood Forests of No. California, USA. What you called a daddy long-leg or crane fly we always called a mosquito hawk. Daddy long-legs are a spider with tiny bodies and really long, thin legs. They like to make webs in the upper most corners of the house. I don't know how accurate our names were but that's what we called them. The cabin looks great.

Some efficient mossing, there Dustin! To maintain an effective draft, installing the flue pipe straight through the roof is the preferred option. Proper insulation and a spark arrestor, you already know about. Install a damper to control airflow and temperature. Avoid installing any sharp-angled bends in the flue. That is an invitation to poor combustion and plenty of smoke in the log house. (I made that mistake years ago.)

Hello Dustin, I’m the States we do call the spiders Granddaddy Long Legs. They are the most poisonous spiders in the world but their mouths are too small to bite you. So they are not deadly. As far as the log cabin goes, I’d put the flu through the window. Amber is the sweetest dog I’ve seen in a while. Enjoyed the live video last night. Especially seeing Craig. He’s a great guy. Anyway, that’s my thoughts and opinions. Stay safe and take care. God bless you.

I would venture to say put the wood stove just left of the ridge pole and drill a hole through one of your larger logs. With an insulated pipe and some metal flashing to run it through the wall you should be good. Kevin on Modern self reliance did this through a see through plastic "roof/wall" and it worked brilliantly. Love everything you do brother. Keep em coming. Btw in the U.S. we call em daddy longleggs too. Btw they taste like peppermint. Would love to see ya try em. And yes I've done it.

(Just so you are aware, this video is placed wrong on your playlist, as it comes after the 2 days and 3 days videos. Caused some confusion for me.) I love these videos, and I gotta say: I've done some survival trips in the past, but in the last year to two years, I've been researching loads of bushcraft. I believe I am ready, and working on preparing for a good long trip for survival and bushcraft. I want to build a little camp that I can revisit from time to time. I also plan on working on it as a stealth camp so that it is difficult to discover by other people a sI primarily want it as my own safe haven, and being an American, I don't want others to defile my safe haven, which people around here would do. Hopefully in time I can take time to discover a good location up in the Uintas! That would be prime territory for exploration and bushcraft camping.

Keep as much of the flue in the cabin as possible so it will radiate heat back inside. maybe even think about piling rocks embedded in mud / cob all around to make it into a thermal mass. You don't need to faff about with a metal plate out of the roof, just get a cheap fire blanket and wrap that around where it would otherwise touch the tarp
@jackcampbell31333 жыл бұрын
In terms of your stove you want to install. I would second the opinions that a straight pipe up through the roof is preferable as it will provide for the most efficient combustion. putting curves in your stovepipe can lead to greaters soot buildup and cresote deposits which can ignite with spectacular results.

🇬🇧- Daddy long legs- crane fly. Larvae mess up grass, badgers like the larvae messing the grass up further. People are pissed at the badgers, they’re getting rid of a pest. 🇺🇸- Some spidery thing. I don’t think they know really- boy cat loves them. The cats have dual nationalities. He spends hours staring at gloomy corners of the house, plunges a paw into the gloom and gets a spider. He also mooches around silently to catch them. Sometimes he eats dust bunnies because they look like spiders.

Mate you mentioned the roundhouse again.....proper excited to see that! As for your woodburner chimney. We have one in our exped trailer and it goes straight out the roof. we call them daddy longlegs or harvestmen in my area in the states. (though there a number of things that get called daddy longlegs- such is the trouble with common names. For these guys (Opiliones), the ‘most venomous’ thing is a myth. they eat mostly decomposing matter (both plant and animal) and are ‘opportunist predators’ but they don’t actually have venom glands at all.

The most sensible thing for the winter is. Cover the stove with fire bricks at the bottom, or best completely the lower part of fire bricks. I know, it is a big effort, however the best solution, for longer time. The flue gas pipes, only in 15, 30 and 45 degrees and always at the vertical pipe below a T piece, so you can clean the pipe well. Sure enough distance to the wood, best a sheet metal protection and around the flue gas pipe a sleeve, where the cavity is insulated, or concreted. Have fun. Imagine you have to wear an electric collar? It is certainly not nice and in addition electric shocks destroy the brain. Not a good idea. Greetings from Frankfurt
@BUSHCRAFTTOOLS3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try to source some bricks for the fireplace. As for the collar...Its not a shocking collar...just a tracker...similar to a fitbit but with built in GPS too.

From the view of construction, safety and rain-resistance, flu going out the side makes most sense. Even well-constructed chimneys can be a right pain in the arris to seal. Metal plate with an oval hole placed in yer window, stick your flu through (so to speak), sorted.
@KaylynnStrain3 жыл бұрын
that bark should work out well, might even help stabilize the door sections. we have daddy longlegs here in Iowa, I don't mind them being aroun since like other spiders they capture other bugs. if you run your stove pipe out the window you could get a tent stovejack to put in the window to keep the pipe centered and keep rain out

You will need metal flashing whether you put the stove pipe through the roof or a window. Going out the side would be easier because you already have a hole there other than modifying the roof. What is that mushroom tree looking thing used for or is it just a decoration?
@craigmooring20913 жыл бұрын
Craneflies and Daddy Longlegs are two different critters. The former flying insects in the class Insecta. Daddy Longlegs (also called harvestmen) are in the class Arachnida which includes spiders, ticks, and scorpions, but they are in their own order, Opiliones; they are opilionids, as contrasted with spiders which are in the order Araneae. The name harvestmen is appropriate because their diet is mostly decaying plant and animal matter. There is no evidence that they are venemous. There is, however, a family of spiders (arachnids), the Pholcidae, called cellar spiders, that are sometimes also called daddy longlegs because they have relatively long legs. They are venomous.
