George, you impress me, I don't think a person of any age would have an easy time with that job. You are having a lot of your trouble because of the cold, when it is cold shrinks bolts housings and even penetrating oil cant do its job properly. Hope the rest of the job goes a little easier for you and I am impressed. Hope your son appreciates this job :) I will be watching thanks for the video.

Please use medium strength loctite on bolts to the rack and bend tabs down. Some of those bolts might try to back out. Ask me how I know.

I am thinking the Ford Taurus had a firewall mounted rack and pinion steering like that ..They were terrible handling when you stomped on the gas they suffered from torque steer which caused the steering to go crazy and all over the road making them unsafe in my opinion I am glad you are getting this job done ..It does not look like an easy one

Hey what was the symptoms of having the bad bushing on this 01? Mine is making knocking at end of left and right turns in park and very slow speed.

I cut the socket using my metal chop saw, which is just an inexpensive miter saw with a metal cutting blade put on it. Hope this helps. BTW, I put the socket on the end of an extension while cutting it to keep fingers away from the blade and used a piece of wood as well to steady it against the backstop.

I would also peek in at the throttle plate and see if dirty , while u in there , If drive by wire and not cable , then do not open manually ,

Great video but I just changed bushings on the inner and the best way to bend the tabs off the bolt is use a long screw driver on the passenger side of the fender wheel took less then 5 mins to bend the pins. Just did this yesterday 9/28/19 took 2 1/2 hours. But I didn’t know gfs son turned the wheel so it took a min to find the bolt holes.

I can make that "standing on engine part a whole lot easier for you. Two saw horses of appropriate height & some two by sixes across the hood of your car. Just make sure to put some screws through them into the saw horse so you can apply torque without collapsing the whole thing.

I do wonder how a Chrysler 'main dealer' would do this job. With the 'hourly rate' for labour, it would become a very expensive job, and as this kind of problem will affect older cars with higher mileage, is it the Chrysler way of making folk scrap their car and buy a new one? It looks like a job that would be easier 'engine out', so maybe a job that should be done if the engine was out for another reason, whether it needs doing or not. Modern cars are just a nightmare with so much plumbing crammed in there.

+harryfaber As you will see in the final video, which is processing as I type this response, it can be done by a competent mechanic in about 3 hours, if all goes well. My son got a quote of about $300. The parts cost about $22... Shop labor rates are $90+ per hour here. Too much stuff stuffed into too small a space, all in the name of styling...
