Prospecting
The first part of business development is sales prospecting. Sales prospecting is finding ideal customers who are an excellent fit for your product and service. The first step of prospecting is list building. In the beginning, the majority of the time spent working for a business development representative will be b2b sales prospecting. This is the same whether you're a sales development rep, business development executive, or business development manager. Some methods of sales prospecting include cold email, LinkedIn, and cold calling.
Business Development Meetings
As you start building your business pipeline, the next step is to take your business development meetings. In these meetings, you're focused on learning more about the prospect, understanding their goals, challenges, and seeing whether they are fit to buy your product or service. This role is very similar to an account executive role where you're job is primarily to take sales and business development meetings. Depending on your business development strategy, you might be targeting small-medium businesses and generating a large number of meetings every month. However, if you're targeting enterprise companies, you may have fewer meetings per month, but each client is worth much more than the average SMB. Some business development examples we're cover is Square, Shake Shack, and Fuzz.
Business Development Rep's Responsibility
To succeed in the business development role, it's your role to generate meetings and taking sales meetings to understand your customer. From there, you'll need presentation and pitching skills to show why you're product and service is better than your competitors. You also must have strong communication skills, people skills, and networking skills.

@@eddie7910 This was in 2015 and the base salary was 45k and I made about 75k after exceeding my number. Just a year later they bumped the base salary up for BDRs to 55k. The key was getting promoted to an inside rep after a year and then I was able to start making 6 figures. The beauty of tech sales is 6 figures is very achievable once you get to any type of closing role

I study software development. I am a great programmer and developer. But I'm too rush in finding jobs then I land a job in business development. I do my work great and perfect, but I hate it every second. If you are an introvert or love working alone. This is not for you.

Same. studied mechanical eng. Built career in Big4 finance. But pivoted into BD during Covid without knowing it could be a trap. the money is great, a reason why I stay. it can be as intellectually fulfilling as I want it to be. plus, definitely there are rooms for growth here. But idk how to pivot back into a more technical field. unless if i start from zero again.

I still cannot define the boundary between BD and sales very clearly, everything done by the BD as explained in this video is actually what should be done by the sales as well, within B2B area. I have a question: whether do BDRs take back the contract?

It would be classified as business development or sales. But this can certainly work with marketing.

Eg: sending email on day 1, calling on days 2, linkedin on day 4, etc etc. campaign period can be up to 14 days, or how every short or long you like. Try www.lemlist.com/ - Email: strong subject leads to high open rates. engaging+personalised email content leads to high reply rates. subjectline.com/ - Cold calling: opening question > 30 second commercial > qualifying questions > book meetings. (other formulas can work too)
