A lot of pizzerias might be mom and pop businesses, but the reality is that the pizza industry is valued at over $38 billion in the US alone. Most people know about the "big four"-Pizza Hut, Domino's, Papa John's, and Little Caesars-but in this episode, we explore some new frontiers of the pizza business. We begin in Silicon Valley at Zume Pizza, a company using robots and trucks outfitted with ovens to revolutionize delivery pizza.
Then, we're off to one of the fastest-growing international markets, South Korea, to see our host Frank Pinello collaborate on a New York -style pie with Mr. Pizza, one of the largest pizza chains based out of Seoul. (There might also be a professional "pizza dancing" team in this one.)

sometimes you need to put competition aside, and let the love of making and eating pizza take over afterall, they all make pizza passionetly, for hating someone else for owning a shop which rivals you is showing you are not making pizza passionately. these trio are true pizza makers, and as a man living in israel i am crying daily that i cant get a slice of each of these people's pizza.

Sincere, friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about what he is documenting. Many hosts or purists would bang on about how the robots are a sin to pizza but Frank looked at it with open eyes!

@YourMajesty143

Except the pizza he spit out in the beginning was ordered from a big chain in NY. He was in his house with 4 local big shot pizza chefs and his grandmother even came over. He was definitely in the East Coast at that point in the video. It wouldn't be until the middle of the video that he goes to Silicon Valley in the West Coast. When he was talking about how Seoul's pizza reminded him of the West Coast (19:20), he was referring to the Asian Style pizza (15:53) that he tried at Zume's factory -- which he actually compliments at 15:47. In both those instances, there is discussion on how the pizza is made sweeter than classic pizza (at 15:56 and at 19:26). That's what makes Asian Style distinct, and is likely what Frank was trying to highlight. Edit: Added a few more timestamps in parentheses.

Hey guys, we're (insert startup name), and we're one of 5 million tech startups that exist around the world today. We're so forward-thinking with our products and services that we decided we need to "revolutionize" the workplace too, because coming up with a useful product or service and selling it, just like any other business, isn't enough these days. At (insert startup name) we believe in people not profit, so unlike other workplaces we have a "zen" room where our "people" can "unwind" whenever they want! We also have a pool table and, YOU GUESSED IT!, a beer fridge. How else are we supposed to dupe these fuckers into staying here 24/7? Don't sweat it though, we're also really humanistic and value our customers as people too, so we decided to name them according to various racial stereotypes. Have you met our "techie average customer" who makes up 48% of the marketplace? Don't worry, he's more than just a statistic to us. He's a person and his name is "Lang"? He's Asian btw. Have you seen our amazing robots?! We don't like the idea of treating anything over here like a tool to be used (see above, humanistic workplace), so we decided to name them. CAUSE THEY'RE PEOPLE TOO! They do most of the legwork for the company and are constantly slaving away making pizzas, so we decided to give them Mexican names like "Juan" and "Pepe". At (insert startup name) we don't believe in work, we believe in doing what you love while "pushing the boundaries" of technology. One pizza at a time.

Hilarious and true. Thank god I don't live in Cali. I'm a NY'er like Frank, even worked at one of the same pizza places he did before he started his own. Our culture in NY is just so different from this silicon valley/cali type culture and attitude. I just had to cringe multiple times listening to this woman talk. It all just seems phony and sheltered, and yet pretentious at the same time. I was half expecting her to show Frank the "cry room" next for when her employees are just having a bad day. Maybe I'm being a bit too critical but I just cannot relate to how these sorts of people act.

I love locally owned pizza places as much as the next person (it's 99% of what I get), but you're tripping if you can't get down with some Dominos or Pizza Hut every now and again. Especially when they're usually like half the cost for the same size.

I'm not sure this message will ever get to these awesome pizza makers, but still. I'm glad there are still people like you and I'm glad big companies get big shares like this in the cooking industry. Having to eat blank meals (and I'm not talking only about pizza here) only makes it sweeter when you go to a local place, like a family Pizza Shop and enjoy their heavenly pizza. I'm from Romania and this happens to us too, but more and more local family businesses started appearing and growing because we can taste the difference. I'd rather pay 20$ for a slice of pizza instead of 5$, when I can definitely taste the difference.

I had a pizzeria with my brother in a college town. Everything fresh, done right, with a recipe from the original owner of the pizzeria in the spot we had, decades old. Dining room packed every weekend, fairly busy most nights. Our pizza was a little less expensive than the chains, and we delivered in a 15 mile radius. I eventually left, and my brother had to close. Even the guy down the street who had been there for over 30 years eventually closed, he was the most popular place in town, he'd have a line down the block when the bars closed. As I drove through town last, Domino's and Papa John's delivery cars all over the place. Applebee's and Chili's were always packed to the gills. I guess people go for what's familiar instead of what's better.

That's the thing tho, places like dominos, little Caesars, and Pizza Hut are cheap because they use cheap ingredients and make more money off off people buying more than one thing. Small places like Lucali's use better ingredients and only have a couple of things on the menu, so of course it's going to be more expensive than the chains.

Whether we like it or not, it's a developing industry and all of this is reality. Why deny it? As I said, the focus on tradition, integrity and passion is in *all* the other episodes. I simply don't think of this one as "sad" and I'm sure it's gonna be a one-off anyway.

That is fair. But I will continue to believe that this will be pretty much the saddest episode ever. You could just tell Pinello was doing this as a courtesy and not like he wanted to do it. I mean he literally sold out to Mr. Pizza and was definitely not cool with making a shitty sweet potato crust pie. // As an aside, I have had Mr. Pizza many times in SK and it is by far the worst pizza I have ever had. Like the video said, it is like having dessert and pizza in the same bite, effing terrible dog food.

Agreed. It's inevitable that the majority of the prepared food industry will incorporate robotics in the future... technology doesn't just stop lol. Unfortunately, my generation is so ass backwards, everything is about ''NOW''... I want this NOW, I want that NOW. Pretty soon we won't even have to open our mouths to communicate with people because that takes too much effort. Eventually, the entire country will operate like silicone valley... where tech is the be all end all. It's sad, but it's going to happen.
