Adrian, what i do with the meal at the feed barrier is i get a 12 inch black corrie pipe and cut in half, leave the pipe down at the feed barrier and put the meal in it, they lick the dishes clean no waste or throwing out meal . Also it stops the meal going down through the silage and then the cattle nosing the silage out searching for bits of meal.

Happy Christmas and a happier new year to you Adrian and the whole family. Just a suggestion regarding the silage wrap on the other farm, when I worked for my friend on his dairy farm I used to put the wrap into an old ton bag,and the mesh into a separate one. I'd keep it packed down,I had them fixed to the side purlins on the shed which meant the bags were open. It left it very easy for loading them when it was time to remove the plastic for recycling. Just an idea. 🖒

I’m a beef farmer and feed nuts to the cattle daily , bfore u feed the animals put out silage but keep the silage out from the barriers when they are eating the nuts then it won’t be going out to far away from them
@jerryodriscoll36914 жыл бұрын
I tend to do it after they have eaten all the silage in front of them, then they don't go digging and pushing all the silage away out of reach, I pour it right in against the concrete so that the bits farthest away from the concrete would only be 6in infront of it, don't go near them when they're eating as they will lift up their heads is the main thing I find that causes them to lose the nuts into the centre of the passageway
@edmondfinucane55064 жыл бұрын
@@jerryodriscoll3691 or give them the nuts whilst you're getting the bales ready
@jerryodriscoll36914 жыл бұрын

Hi just another comment on pushing in the silage block. Put in the first block but push it in with the next block in the shear grab then drop second block push it in with the third means less time opening and closing the grab in the shed. Last block you have to use the empty grab. Really hope you are well and had a good safe Christmas.

Hi Adrian , happy new year to u and ur family, i had a problem similar to you with feeding meal at the feed barrier what i did was get a 12 inch black corrie pipe , cut it down both sides and divided the pipe in half, leave it down at feed barrier and put meal in it when feeding, i find it stops them nosing the meal out and also stops the problem of meal falling down through silage and then they shove silage out searching for meal , it works for me , take care.

Small tip for cutting blocks of silage out of the pit. Cut a full block then skip very slightly less then full block and cut a full block again. Now go back and cut the middle block out or leave it and skip a slightly less the full block again. It leaves you putting the exact same amount of pressure on each ram of the sheargrab every time. When you cut the smaller blocks out the only pressure exerted on the rams is equally along the front teeth. It leaves it that one ram is not biting full force into the pit face where the other ram is really a passenger in the process.

Great video young man. Have you seen the Hay Team TV, Tom Pemberton, George Saunders and Anthony Farming doing the "Bale Unwrapping Challenge"? The fastest time is 38seconds if I recall correctly? Basically, take three round bales, stand them on end, place your knife on the top and then time how long it takes to cut and strip the three bales of their wrap! All the best for 2021!

You said a few months ago you wanted a bigger slurry tanker possibly a hi-spec.a half ton meal bag is perfect for wrap plastic and netting separately
@jerryodriscoll36914 жыл бұрын
Regarding to the nuts problem, pour it in as close as possible to the headfeed and don't go near them as they may lift their heads which will cause them to lose the nuts. With the silage wrap problem, 1 bale in 30 bales, cut a circle out of the face of it, peel back the plastic without cutting into the sides, takes a bit longer but it works perfectly as a bag to keep the plastic in and you only have to do it every 30bales or so, can do the same with the netting also. Also with the shear grab, drop the block, go out and pick up the next block and push it in with the full grab saves a bit of time
